Tom Paulus
From his play as a freshman in 1977 when he was selected "Rookie of the Year," Blue Devil football fans knew he was destined for high honors. He achieved football's highest award at UW-Stout when he was named "Most Valuable Player" in the Wisconsin State University Conference in 1980. From his linebacking position, he captained the squad in his senior year, gaining a host of honors including All-American, all-conference and the NAIA's scholar athlete award.
Gaylord Herbst
A standout in two sports, he lettered in baseball and football in each of his four years at Stout. As a defensive back, he earned all-district honors in 1964 and 1965 and All-American honors in 1965, a conference championship year. Leadership skills developed as co-captain of the squad served him well later in his career as a coach and athletic director at Seymour High School.
Terrance Hickman
An outstanding athlete who came to Stout after earning all-state honors in football at D.C. Everest High School, he was awarded football letters in each of his four years as a Blue Devil. Rare athletic skills allowed him to play both in the offensive line and on defense as a linebacker. A member of the 1965 championship team, he received all-district and All-American honors in his junior and senior years.
Gordon Von Gonten
His play on the gridiron and on the basketball court during the 1930s helped build a firm foundation for athletics at Stout. A four-year letter winner in both sports, he captained the football team in 1939 and co-captained the basketball squad in 1937. He used the lessons learned in athletics to help forge a successful career in business and industry.
