History:

President Tubman’s reign over Liberia was controversial, but the country underwent more changes during the quarter of a century that he ruled the country than in the century before. During this period Liberia was considered “Small America,” due to the fact that Liberia’s economy had the fastest growth rate in the world. Even after Tubman’s death, Liberia had the largest mercantile fleet in the world, Liberia hosted the world’s largest rubber plantation and latex factory, and it became Africa’s main exporter of iron ore and ranked third on the world list of iron ore exporters. The oppressive reign of Samual K. Doe, Liberia’s first tribal president in, the brutal civil war followed by the terror of President Charles Taylor’s regime destroyed the economic and Tubman’s achievements.
