Definitions

Artifact: A product or result of work. Artifacts that can be used for the portfolio come from a variety of sources -coursework, student projects, classroom observations, digital video of presentations, etc. They include required tasks (or artifacts) defined by the college/program/course.

Benchmark: A standard by which something is evaluated or measured; a point of reference or standard against which to measure performance; a measure of the performance of an item relative to another similar item. For information on benchmarking visit the BPA Website.

Learning Portfolio: A collection of work/artifacts/documents which can reveal, in the aggregate, the state of an academic program; they can provide valuable insights into what students know and how they construct that knowledge; they can provide institutional barometers, if you will, that suggest programmatic highs and lows, strengths and weaknesses (Burch 1997).

Formative Assessment: Formative assessment is utilized to immediately determine whether students have learned what the instructor intended.  This type of assessment is intended to help instructors identify material which needs to be clarified or re-taught and should not be used to evaluate or grade students.  Results of formative assessment can assist instructors to ascertain whether curriculum or learning activities need to be modified during a class session or before the next class meets.

Summative Assessment: Summative assessment is cumulative in nature and is utilized to determine whether students have met the course goals or student learning outcomes at the end of a course or program.
