UW-LA CROSSE WINS THIRD CONSECUTIVE TITLE

MENOMONIE - University of Wisconsin-La Crosse won its third consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) men's indoor track and field title following completion of the two-day conference meet at UW-Stout's Sports & Fitness Center on March 6.

UW-La Crosse finished with 210.50 team points to outdistance UW-Whitewater, which placed second with 180 points. UW-Stevens Point finished third (88), followed by UW-Oshkosh (84), UW-Platteville (56.50), UW-Eau Claire (33), UW-Stout (28), UW-River Falls (19) and UW-Superior (2).

The Eagles, who have won 23 of the last 26 league events, claimed seven individual titles and two relay crowns en route to the championship. Matt Pagel won the 55-meter dash for the second straight season with a time of 6.38. He set a conference record of 6.32 in the preliminaries of the event and was voted the Track Performer of the Meet for his efforts.

Andrew Rock became the first individual in conference history to win four straight 200-meter dash titles when he crossed the line in 21.52. Jeremy Deterville won the 400-meter dash in 50.18, while Derek Toshner claimed the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.68.

UW-La Crosse's Herc Hyland secured the triple jump title with a leap of 47-2 1/2 and Hans Schmidt claimed the pole vault crown for the third time in four seasons with a height of 17-2 3/4. Jim Nelson won the shot put for the third straight year with a heave of 55-5 1/2.

The Eagles won both the 4 x 200-meter and 4 x 400-meter relay titles with times of 1:27.99 and 3:20.94, respectively. Their time in the 4 x 200 established a conference record.

UW-Whitewater claimed five individual titles during the two-day competition. Riley Kehoe placed first in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:25.69, while Devin Wilson won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:00.28.

The Warhawks' Jeremy Wendt won the 35-pound weight throw with a conference-record toss of 64-8. He was voted the Field Performer of the Meet for his efforts. Derek Stanley captured the long jump crown with a leap of 23-4 1/2 and Eric Jacobson claimed the heptathlon title with 4,777 points.

The Warhawks also won the distance medley relay for the first time in school history with a time of 10:07.15.

UW-Oshkosh's John LeRoy won the 800-meter run championship with a time of 1:53.91 and Tom Roszak claimed the high jump title with a height of 6-8 3/4.

UW-Platteville's Ryan Kleimenhagen secured the 1,500-meter run crown for the second time in his career with a time of 3:54.04. He also won the event during the 2002 conference meet.

UW-La Crosse head coach Mark Guthrie was voted the Coach of the Year for the third straight season and fourth time in his career.

EAGLES' MATT PAGEL SETS CONFERENCE MARK

MENOMONIE - UW-La Crosse's Matt Pagel set a new conference record as he ran away with the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash in the opening day of the WIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, Friday, March 5 at UW-Stout's Sports & Fitness Center.

Pagel took the top time of the event in a time of 6.32-seconds, eclipsing the time of 6.34 set by Dan Tutskey of La Crosse in 2002. The Eagles took the top three times in the event with Ben Dorsey second (6.46) and Darrick Smith third (6.49).

Andrew Rock of La Crosse put himself in position to win four consecutive 200-meter dash titles, capturing the top time (22.18) in the preliminaries.

UW-Whitewater's Devin Wilson won the 5000-meter run, pacing the field with a time of 15-minutes, 0.28-seconds. The Warhawks also captured first in the distance medley relay (10:07.15) in an NCAA provisional qualifying time.

Hans Schmidt of La Crosse easily recaptured the medal in the pole vault. The 2002 champion leaped to 17-feet, 2.75-inches. Schmidt came up short in a bid to break the conference record of 17-7.75.

Whitewater's Derek Stanley leaped to the win in the long jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying distance of 23-4.50.

La Crosse's Jim Nelson defended his shot put title, winning by almost two feet over UW-Eau Claire's John Schuna. Nelson threw 55-5.50, while Schuna tossed the ball 53-8.50.
