Team Leader Training

There can be two types of team leaders in a self-directed work team implementation.  The Coach, who usually is a former supervisor or manager.  The coach's responsibilities will become less as the teams become more secure and development (Van Emeren, 1995).

The second classification of leadership within a self-directed work team is the Team leader.  The Team leader appointed by the team or the Steering committee.  This leadership function may rotate from team member to team member once the team develops.

(*Application Note:  Please note that in the discussions regarding the Marconi Communications' implementation, the role of the Team leader has been appointed to the former supervisor.  These coaches/team leaders will evolve to two separate functions as the teams mature.)

Van Eimeren, (1995) identifies that a training program for Team Leaders/Coaches should include conversations regarding:

  • Coaching for success

  • Managing change

  • Managing conflict

  • Team building/empowerment

  • In addition to the above, most of the courses that team members will attend

Wellings, et al. goes on to explain that team leaders need to exhibit certain dimensions as teams assume more responsibilities, and the team leader's role shifts along the empowerment continuum.  Some of the team leader dimensions include:

  • Ability to Learn (Applied Learning)

  • Analysis (Problem Identification)

  •  Communication (Oral and Written)

  • Delegation of Authority
    and Responsibility

  • Developing Organizational Talent

  • Follow-up

  • Individual Leadership (Influence)

  • Information Monitoring

  • Initiative

  • Business Planning

  • Collaboration

  • Judgment (Problem Solution)

  • Maximizing Performance

  • Meeting Leadership

  • Operational Planning

  • Organizational Fit

  • Rapport Building
