BLUE DEVILS SPLIT FOUR GAMES AT OWN TOURNAMENT

MENOMONIE - A young UW-Stout softball team turned in a respectable performance at their own UW-Stout Fastpitch Softball Tournament by splitting four games on April 1-2 at Wakanda Park.

The Blue Devils opened up with a 14-2 romp over UW-Superior, then were crunched, 11-1 by defending national champion UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers had just lost a suspense-filled thriller, 9-8, to St. Scholastica.

Stout opened the second day of the tourney with a 12-7 win over St. Scholastica, then were tipped, 4-3, by UW-La Crosse.

Against the Yellowjackets, Stout (4-12) were led by Janel Krenz (So, McFarland) and Cara Fenhouse (Jr, Superior). Both players went 4-for-5 with Krenz picking up three RBIs and Fenhouse two. Fenhouse, who returns from surgery only a week ago, blasted a home run and Krenz had two doubles. Rebecca Zimmerman (Jr, Fall Creek) went the distance and picked up the win.

The Blue Devils barely had a chance against the aching Pointers, who rolled up two runs in the first, four in the second and five in the fourth to end the game in five innings. Fenhouse hit a solo home run in the second inning for her second round tripper of the day.

Tanya Petrie (Sr, Menomonie) wielded the biggest stick against St. Scholastica, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs. Krenz went 2-for-5 with four RBIs. Stout held a slim 8-7 lead going into the top of the seventh when they exploded for four runs to put the game away. Zimmerman recorded her second win of the tournament.

Stout came up just short against the Eagles, rallying for two runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score at 3-3. But the Eagles got the decisive run in the top of the sixth.

The Blue Devils will be off until April 10-11 when they travel to the UW-Stevens Point Tournament.

RACHEL TRAYNOR NAMED HONORABLE MENTION ALL-REGION

MADISON - UW-Stout's Rachel Traynor (Sr, Ellsworth/Spring Valley HS) was named as an honorable mention pick to the Columbus Multimedia Division III Women's Basketball 1999 All-Central Regional Team.

Traynor, a first team all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) pick, proved to be a fire plug for the Blue Devils all season as Stout fought to recover from an early 1-6 start. And recover Stout did, finishing the season with a 14-12 overall record, 10-6 in the conference, good for fourth place.

Traynor finished the season second on the team in scoring with 12.7 points, and ranked 11th in conference games only with 11.6 points. Traynor scored a career-high 31 points Feb. 13 against UW-Superior. Traynor led the team in scoring in nine games.

Traynor moved from point guard to the wing this season, and was eighth in the WIAC in 3-point shots made with 1.50. She was second on the team in assists with 2.5 per game. She made 43 percent of her shots and 77 percent of her free throws.

Traynor is an early childhood education major and carries a grade point average of 3.7 and was a candidate for the WIAC Scholar-Athlete.
