Tournament schedule: Thursday, April 1: UW-Stout vs. UW-Superior, 3 p.m., UW-Stevens Point vs. St. Scholastica, 3 p.m., UW-Stout vs. UW-Stevens Point, 5 p.m., St. Scholastica vs. UW-La Crosse, 5 p.m., UW-Superior vs. UW-La Crosse, 7 p.m. April 2: St. Scholastica vs. Superior, 10 a.m., UW-Stevens Point vs. UW-La Crosse, 10 a.m., UW-Stout vs. St. Scholastica, noon, UW-Stevens Point vs. UW-Superior, noon, UW-Stout vs. UW-La Crosse, 2 p.m. UW-Stevens Point is the defending national champion.
Last Time Out: The Blue Devils went 1-3 at the Simpson College Tournament in Indianola, Iowa, Saturday and Sunday, defeating Wartburg College, 3-1, then falling 11-3 to St. Ambrose, 13-3 to William Penn and 12-10 to Grand View.

BLUE DEVILS SWEEP PAST WHEATON COLLEGE AT DOME

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn - After opening their season with 10 straight losses, the UW-Stout baseball team stretched their winning streak to four games by sweeping Wheaton College, 6-1, 14-4, Saturday, March 27 at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

In the opener, Zak Arneson (So, Barneveld) went the distance, scattering four hits and allowing on unearned run in the first inning. Arneson notched eight strikeouts and allowed two walks.

Tate Cummins (Sr, Austin, Minn) went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases to lead the Blue Devils. Nick Kalina (Fr, Potosi) and Eddie Young (So, La Crosse) each had doubles and JR Dachel's (Jr, Bloomer) only hit was a two-run single in the four-run second inning. Young got the other two RBIs in the stanza with his double.

In the second game, Stout (4-10) scored four runs in each of the first two innings to blow the game wide open.

The Dachel brothers provided the most offense for the Blue Devils with JW Dachel (Fr, Bloomer) going 4-for-4 and scoring three runs, while big brother JR Dachel was 3-for-4 and scored three runs.

The Blue Devils will be off until Saturday, April 10 when they travel to St. Thomas. The following day, Stout will be at Augsburg College.

BLUE DEVIL SOFTBALL WIN OPENING GAME AT SIMPSON INVITE

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Kelly Espey (Fr, Byron, Minn) had two RBIs and Rebecca Deuel (Fr, Big Lake, Minn) scattered five hits as the UW-Stout softball team picked up a 3-1 win over Wartburg College in the first game of the Simpson College Tournament Saturday, March 27 in Indianola, Iowa.

Deuel allowed only one unearned run in the third inning to pick up her first win of the season.

Tanya Petrie (Sr, Menomonie) went 2-for-3 with both hits as doubles to lead Stout's six-hit attack.

But Stout could not muster another during the next three games, dropping an 11-3 decision to St. Ambrose, a 13-3 contest to William Penn and a 12-10 free-for-all to Grand View.

Against St. Ambrose, the Bees stung Stout (2-11) for runs in four of the five innings, racking up two four runs in the third to jump back out front, 6-3. Ambrose put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Blue Devils knotted the game at 2-2 against William Penn in the bottom of the first, but then fell apart as William Penn quaked Stout for eight runs in the top of the third. Play was suspended due to darkness after the fourth, but three runs in the top of the fifth gave Penn the win in five innings.

Espey had a three-run round tripper in the top of the sixth as the Blue Devils battled back from a 12-4 deficit against Grand View. The Blue Devils tacked on three more runs in the inning, but the game was called after five innings due to time.

Petrie went 3-for-3 in the contest with two RBIs. Espey, Beth Patterson (Fr, Prescott) and Jill Tetu (Fr, Maplewood, Minn) all went 2-for-3 in the game.

On the weekend, Petrie finished up hitting 6-for-12 with four RBIs and two doubles.

The Blue Devils host their own UW-Stout Fastpitch Softball Tournament April 1-2 at Wakanda Park. Thursday, Stout will play UW-Superior at 3 p.m. and UW-Stevens Point at 5 p.m. Friday, Stout will play St. Scholastica at noon and UW-La Crosse at 2 p.m.

JEREMY PRESTON REPEATS AS BLUE DEVIL MVP

MENOMONIE -
For the second consecutive year, Jeremy Preston (Sr, Madison) was named as the most valuable player of the UW-Stout men’s basketball team. Blue Devil coach John Muraski named his 1998-99 awards at the team’s annual awards banquet, Sunday, March 28.

Preston, a two-time Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) honorable mention pick, was the team’s leading scorer, averaging 16.9 points per contest. Preston was 152-for-387 from the field and 56-for-159 from 3-point range. Preston shot 84 percent from the line, hitting 95-of-113 charity shots. Preston also averaged 3.7 rebounds per game.

The Blue Devils finished the season at 15-12 overall, 6-10 in the WIAC and advanced to the championship game of the WIAC playoffs before falling to eventual national champion UW-Platteville, 90-88, in overtime.

BLUE DEVIL WOMEN'S BASKETBALL AWARD WINNERS NAMED

MENOMONIE - Rachel Traynor (Sr, Ellsworth/Spring Valley HS)
was named as the most valuable player at the annual UW-Stout women’s basketball team awards banquet Sunday, March 28.

Traynor, a point guard who moved over to the shooting guard spot, provided senior leadership and a spark for the young Blue Devil team that finished 14-12 overall, 10-6 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Traynor, a first team all-conference pick and a member of the WIAC all-defensive team, finished the year averaging 12.7 points per game, 2.5 assists per game and 25 steals.

Traynor also received the team’s defensive most valuable award and led the team in free throw shooting percentage (.767) and shooting percentage (.425).

JACOBSON NAMED TO DISTRICT ALL-REGION ACADEMIC TEAM

MENOMONIE - UW-Stout's Katie Jacobson (Sr, Eau Claire/Altoona HS) was named to the 1998-99 GTE/CoSIDA Academic District V Women's Fall/Winter At-Large Team.

Jacobson, who runs cross country and track for the Blue Devils, placed 14th at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships last fall and placed sixth in 1997. Jacobson finished fourth at the NCAA Division III regional meet and was fourth at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships.

The school record holder for cross country, Jacobson was selected as the WIAC co-scholar athlete of the year for cross country last fall as she placed below fourth in meets only twice all season.

Jacobson is a family consumer education major with a grade point average of 3.70 and is a three-time recipient of the UW-Stout Chancellor's Award for academic excellence and is a member of the Student/Athletic Advisory committee.

A standout in track, Jacobson holds the school records for the indoor 600-, 800-, 1000- and 1500-meter runs, as well as the outdoor records in the 800- and 1500-meter runs. Jacobson finished third at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships in the 1500-meter run early in March.

Jacobson is now eligible for Academic All-America Honors.

BLUE DEVIL TENNIS PICKS UP FIRST WIN OF SEASON

MENOMONIE - It has been almost a full year since the UW-Stout tennis team has tasted victory, but the Blue Devils picked up their first win of the 1998-99 season as they handed Northwestern, Minn., College an 8-1 decision Friday, March 26 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Lauren Mader (Jr, Neenah), Molly Litchfield (Fr, Eau Claire) and Jenny Anderson (Fr, Faribault, Minn) all picked up straight set wins in singles. Jodi Anderson (Fr, Anoka) came back after dropping her first game at No. 4 singles, 6-4, to win 4-6, 6-4, 7-3. None of the Blue Devil doubles teams were seriously threatened.

Stout continues its spring schedule Friday, April 16, when they host Martin Luther College at 3:30 p.m.
