BLUE DEVILS WIN PAIR IN FINAL DAY OF FLORIDA TRIP

FT. MYERS, Fla. - After a disheartening week of losses, UW-Stout finally picked up a couple of wins in their final day in their annual spring break trip Saturday, March 20 in Ft. Myers, Fla.

The Blue Devils gave up only three hits in downing Marian College, 2-1, in the day's opener, then came up with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to down Mt. Vernon Nazarene, 4-3.

Winning pitcher Jake Streich (Fr, Howard Lake, Minn) surrendered an unearned run in the top of the first, then settled down to allow only two runners in scoring position until giving way to Brian Bee (Fr, Bloomer), who picked up the save.

Stout (2-10) got their runs in the second when Ryan Hanson (Sr, Austin, Minn) reached on a double, then scored when Eddie Young (So, La Crosse) was safe by an error. Young scored on an RBI by Nick Kalina (Fr, Potosi).

In the Blue Devils' final game of the trip, Mt. Vernon ate up three Stout pitchers before Bee and Corey Paar (So, Black River Falls) came in. Bee pitched one inning and Paar was the beneficiary of Stout's final inning explosion. Paar allowed only one batter on base.

Hanson drew a lead-off walk in the seventh, then Brad O'Connell (So, Elk Mound) moved him to third. Following an out, O'Connell stole second, then both were driven home by Young's single.

Kalina proved to be the hero of the game when his game-winning double drove in Young.

STOUTS FALLS TO NATIONALLY RANKED WOOSTER, BUT HOLD OWN

FT. MYERS, Fla. - After playing a marathon couple of games the night before, UW-Stout woke up early to play another nationally ranked team in the College of Wooster (Ohio). The Blue Devils fell, 6-4, 7-4, to the No. 15 ranked Scots.

It took a while for the Blue Devils to shake off the cobwebs, as Wooster jumped out to a 6-0 lead into the seventh inning. The Stout bats came to life in the bottom of the seventh. Ryan Hanson (Sr, Austin, Minn) and Andy Guden (Jr, Medford) each reached and were brought in on Brad O'Connell's (So, Elk Mound) single.

O'Connell was put out on a fielders choice, but Josh Johnson (So, Oregon) and Eddie Young (So, La Crosse) were driven home by Tate Cummins' (Sr, Austin, Minn) double for the final score.

In the second game, Stout scored two runs in the top of the first on RBIs by Hanson and O'Connell. The Blue Devil defense gave up an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning., then another in the third.

Again, Stout jumped out to a two-run lead, this time in the fifth when Guden's double drove in two runs. But Wooster lived up to their billing, scoring three runs - all unearned - in the fifth and tacked on two innings in the sixth.

EXTRA INNINGS TAKE WIND OUT OF BLUE DEVILS SAILS

FT. MYERS, Fla. - After dropping a 7-6 11-inning affair to Ripon College, UW-Stout simply ran out of gas and suffered a 16-4 loss to No. 8 nationally-ranked Aurora College, Thursday, March 18 at Ft. Myers, Fla.

The Blue Devils had a opportunity to nip Ripon in the ninth. Holding a one-run lead, Stout surrendered a two-out home run to send the game further into the Florida night.

Stout took a 6-5 lead in the top of the 11th inning when Andy Guden (Jr, Medford) connected on a lead-off double, then scored when Brad O'Connell (So, Elk Mound) drove him home. Poor baserunning cost Stout two more runners in the inning.

The Red Hawks made the most of their chances in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs with two outs.

JR Dachel (Jr, Bloomer) went 2-for-4 in the game with two solo home runs, one in the first and one in the third.

Stout never really had a chance against Aurora, giving up a leadoff run, as the game started well after 9 p.m.

The Blue Devils took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third when Tate Cummins (Sr, Austin, Minn) drove in two runs, but Aurora batted around in their half of the inning, scoring six runs. Aurora added four more in the fifth and Stout did tack two runs in the sixth when Ryan Hanson (Sr, Austin, Minn) and Al Genin (Fr, Oregon) each drove in a run.

Aurora scored five more runs in the sixth to close out the scoring.

JR DACHEL HITS PAIR OF ROUND TRIPPERS, DEVILS STILL FALL

FT. MYERS, Fla. - J.R. Dachel (Jr, Bloomer) hit a home run in each game of a doubleheader with Rowan University, Tuesday, March 16, but UW-Stout still dropped both games to the Profs, 5-2, 12-3.

In the openers, Stout got single runs in the first and third on the home run by Dachel and an RBI by Andy Guden (Jr, Medford). Rowan came back with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and added a pair in the seventh.

Matt Sias (Sr, Clear Lake) scattered eight hits and struck out four in giving up two earned runs, but was saddled with the loss. Dachel went 2-for-4 on the game.

In the second contest, Dachel went 2-for-3 and scored two runs, while Brad O'Connell (So, Elk Mound) went 2-for-4.

Stout (0-6) again took an early lead with a run in their half of the first, but Rowan roared back with two runs in the second, three in the third, six in the fourth and tacked on another in the fifth.

Stout did manage to pound out eight hits, their best offensive output of the season so far, but five pitchers combined to surrender 13 hits and eight earned runs.

BLUE DEVIL BASEBALL TEAM DROPS FLORIDA OPENERS

FT. MYERS, Fla. - Despite being shut out in the second game of their spring trip opener, there was a ray of sunshine in UW-Stout's 2-0 loss to Amherst College Monday, March 15 in Ft. Myers, Fla.

The Blue Devils (0-4) outhit Amherst, 5-2, but could not string their hits together for any runs. Two errors on the Blue Devil infield gave Amherst their two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Scott Meyer (Jr, Austin, Minn) went the distance, striking out two and walking one.

Ryan Hanson (Sr, Austin, Minn) picked up two hits in three at-bats.

In the opener, Amherst cracked out four runs in the top of the first inning on their way to an 8-1 win over Stout.

Tate Cummins (Sr, Austin, Minn) and JR Dachel (Jr, Bloomer) picked up Stout's only hits, both doubles.

Zak Arneson (So, Barneveld) pitched six innings, giving up two hits, but three earned runs. Arneson walked three and struck out four. The Blue Devils committed four infield errors.

Stout's games Sunday with MacMurray (Ill) College were rained out and will not be made up.

BLUE DEVILS PICK UP FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON, DOWN CARROLL

ORLANDO, Fla. - It took all week and all game, but the UW-Stout softball team picked up their first win of the season and handed coach Chris Stainer her first win as Blue Devil coach as Stout downed Carroll College, 3-2, on their final day, Friday, March 19, of Stout's annual Florida spring break trip.

Later on that day, Stout lost, 7-2, to Illinois Benedictine to finish out their trip.

But in the first game, with the game tied at 2-2 heading into the top of the seventh, Tanya Petrie (Sr, Menomonie) led off the inning with a single. Becky Wright (So, Eau Claire) came in as a pinch runner and advanced to second on a passed ball, then moved to third on an error.

Molly Harms (Fr, Norwood-Young America, Minn) lifted a sacrifice fly to left field for the eventual game-winning hit. Carroll went quietly in the bottom of the inning as Rebecca Zimmerman (Jr, Fall Creek) forced two fly balls and one infield grounder.

Jill Tetu (Fr, Maplewood, Minn) went 2-for-3 and scored one run.

In the final game, Stout (1-7) got both of their runs in the top of the first inning as Petrie drove in Cara Fenhouse (Jr, Superior) and Angie Pinnow (So, Bruce).

Benedictine scored two runs in the first, the eventual game winner in the fifth and put the game away in the seventh with four runs.

BLUE DEVILS PUT OUT BEST OFFENSIVE OUTPUT, STILL FALL

ORLANDO, Fla. - After tallying only one run in their previous four games, the UW-Stout softball team started to find some offense, but still dropped two games on their annual spring break trip Thursday, March 18 to the Orlando, Fla., area.

Stout lost 7-3 to Springfield, Mass., in their first game, then dropped a 15-3 decision to nationally ranked College of New Jersey.

In the opener, Stout took a one-run lead in the first game when Janel Krenz (So, McFarland), who was moved from the eighth batting position to the lead-off spot, reached on a single, advanced to second on a passed ball, then moved to third on a wild pitch. Cara Fenhouse (Jr, Superior) got the RBI when she hit into a fielders' choice to bring Krenz home.

Springfield scrored an unearned run in their half of the inning, then got four runs in the second and a single run in the third.

Krenz drove in a run in the fourth and Molly Harms (Fr, Norwood-Young America, Minn) scored on an error for Stout's final run. Springfield got a solo home run in the fifth inning.

New Jersey gave Stout little mercy, jumping out 15-0 lead before Stout put two runs on the board in the fourth inning with Tommi Valley (Fr, Chetek) and Becky Wright (So, Eau Claire) picking up RBIs. Stout added a single run in the fifth.

BLUE DEVILS BLANKED IN TWO NIGHT GAMES

ORLANDO, Fla. - There would be no luck of the Irish for the UW-Stout softball team as they were blanked in two night contests Wednesday, March 17 on their annual spring break trip to the Orlando, Fla., area.

The Blue Devils were tripped up, 12-0, by nationally-ranked Bridgewater (Mass) College in the first game, then were tumbled, 9-0, by Illinois Wesleyan in the late game.

Against Bridgewater, Janel Krenz (So, McFarland) got two of Stout's three hits, and Molly Wagner (So, Altoona) got the other. Stout only got one runner past second base.

After Stout pitcher Rebecca Zimmerman (Jr, Fall Creek) held Bridgewater scoreless for two innings, the walls fell in as Bridgewater scored eight runs in the third, added three in the fourth and a solo run in the fifth.

Illinois Wesleyan held Stout to three hits, all single base hits. Wesleyan got single runs in the second and third, four runs in the fourth and three in the fifth.

LACK OF OFFENSE LEAD TO OPENING LOSSES

ORLANDO, Fla. - A lack of aggressiveness at the plate cost the UW-Stout softball team two games in their opening contests of the Rebel Spring Games at Orlando, Fla., Monday, March 15.

The Blue Devils, who had been rained out Sunday, March 14, dropped a five-inning 8-0 decision to Messiah (Pa) College to lead off the day, then had a slightly better game in the afternoon, falling 6-1 to Richard Stockton.

With five strikeouts in the first game and eight in the second, the Blue Devils could not acquire the needed runners or firepower to put together an offensive threat.

Against Messiah, Stout managed only three hits, but one was a triple by Angie Pinnow (So, Bruce). Messiah put together two runs in the second, then exploded for six in the third.

Stout racked up six hits in the second game, but Stockton got three runs in the top of the first inning, then single runs in the second, fourth and fifth.

The Blue Devils got their only run in the bottom of the fourth, when Jill Tetu (Fr, Maplewood, Minn) drove in Bobbie Bailey (Fr, Stillwater, Minn), who was running for Tanya Petrie (Sr, Menomonie).

Kristin Liberty (Jr, Tomahawk) got Stout's only extra base hit, picking up a double.
