KUEPERS, PRESTON NAMED ALL-WIAC HONORABLE MENTION

MADISON - UW-Stout's two leading scorers were named as honorable mention to the All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) men's basketball team.

Jeremy Preston (Sr, Madison) repeated to the team and Ben Kuepers (Jr, Dickeyville) was a first-time pick.

Preston led the Blue Devils in scoring from beginning to end, finishing the season with 16.9 points overall, and finished eighth in the conference with a 16.3 average during the 16 league games. Preston was the team's leading 3-point shooter, hitting 56-of-159 treys overall and was third in WIAC games, averaging 2.19 3-pointers made.

Preston was an 84 percent free throw shooter and averaged 3.7 rebounds per game.

Kuepers was one of the top rebounders and shot blockers in the WIAC, finishing second in both categories.

In league games, Kuepers averaged 8.9 rebounds per game, considerably above his overall average of 7.4 rebounds, and averaged 1.63 blocked shots per game, while all in all games he averaged 1.41 blocks.

Kuepers finished behind Preston in scoring, averaging 12.5 points per game, and 13.6 in conference games, 12th in the league.

The Blue Devils finished the season 15-12 overall, 6-10 in the WIAC. Stout concluded the season three points short of getting a first-ever bid to the NCAA playoffs. Stout was seeded sixth in the league tournament, then proceeded to knock off No. 3 seeded UW-Eau Claire and No. 2 seeded UW-Oshkosh, before falling to No. 1 seeded UW-Platteville, 90-88, in overtime.

RACHEL TRAYNOR ALL-WIAC, BERG, PETERSON HONORABLE MENTION

MADISON - UW-Stout's Rachel Traynor (Sr, Ellsworth/Spring Valley HS) was named to the All-WIAC women's basketball team for the second consecutive season, while teammates Shannon Berg (Sr, Ellsworth) and Heather Peterson (Jr, Altoona) were named as honorable mention.

Traynor, who was also named to the WIAC all-defensive team, proved to be a fire plug for the Blue Devils all season as Stout fought to recover from an early 1-6 start. And recover Stout did, finishing the season with a 14-12 overall record, 10-6 in the conference, good for fourth place.

Traynor finished the season second on the team in scoring with 12.7 points, and ranked 11th in conference games only with 11.6 points. Traynor scored a career-high 31 points Feb. 13 against UW-Superior. Traynor led the team in scoring in nine games.

Traynor moved from point guard to the wing this season, and was eighth in the WIAC in 3-point shots made with 1.50. She was second on the team in assists with 2.5 per game. She made 43 percent of her shots and 77 percent of her free throws.

Berg ranked eighth in the WIAC in scoring with 13 points and led the team in scoring with 13.8 points in all games. Berg pulled down five rebounds per game, ranking her 14th. She shot 72 percent from the free throw line and was third in the league in 3-point field goals made with 1.94 per game.

Peterson returned to the Blue Devils after a year off, and the guard proved to be tough under the boards, pulling down a team-high 5.7 rebounds. In conference games, Peterson stepped up her average to 6.8 rebounds per contest, ranking her eighth.

The same held true in scoring where Peterson averaged 11.2 points in all games, but averaged 13.8 points in league games to rank fifth. Peterson was second on the team in steals with 56 and third in assists with 52.

LOMEN, CORBETT RETURN TO NCHA HONORS TEAM

MENOMONIE - UW-Stout's Graham Lomen (Sr, Apple Valley, Minn) and Mark Corbett (Sr, New Hope, Minn) were named to the 1999 All-Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) honorable mention team for the second time in both of their careers.

Both Lomen and Corbett were named to the NCHA honorable mention squad in 1997.

Lomen, a 6-foot, 240-lb. forward, was the Blue Devils' leading scorer, racking up 15 goals and 11 assists for 26 points. In NCHA games only, Lomen had nine goals - including three power play goals and two game winning goals - and seven assists for 16 points. Lomen, the Blue Devils' second-leading scorer in 1997, bounced back this season after back surgery in 1998.

Corbett, a 5-9, 185-lb. forward, finished the season with eight goals and 12 assists, playing in all 27 games. In the NCHA, Corbett scored four goals and 10 assists for 14 points.

Corbett was also named to the 1999 NCHA Academic team for the second time. Corbett is majoring in business.

To be named to the team, a player must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, have earned at least 50 semester or 75 quarter hours and be recommended by his head coach. Thirty-seven student/athletes were named to the squad, four for the third time and 12 for the second time.

The Blue Devils had five players named to the academic team. Defenseman Greg Foster (Sr, Roseau, Minn) and goalkeeper Todd Sether (Sr, International Falls, Minn) were named for the second consectutive year. Foster is majoring in business and Sether is an early childhood education major.

Lomen was named for the first time, as was forward Luke Murray (Jr, Bloomington, Minn). Lomen is a human development major and Murray is a business major.

The Blue Devils finished with a 9-16-2 overall record, and a 6-9-1 record in the NCHA to place sixth, their best-ever NCHA finish.

TEAM BREAKS 100, SEVERAL PERFORMERS SET PERSONAL BESTS

RIVER FALLS - For the second time this season, the shorthanded UW-Stout gymnastics team broke 100 points and several performers set personal bests at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) West Region meet Friday, March 5 at River Falls.

The Blue Devils scored 102.175, but finished eighth in the team scoring, despite their highest score of the season.

Brenna Jones (So, St. Paul, Minn) was vying to advance to the NCGA National meet March 19-20 on the balance beam and the floor exercise. No Blue Devil performer placed in the top five.

Jones scored an 8.30 on the beam and an 8.95 on the floor. Jones will compete at the national meet as a specialist on the floor exercise. Gymnasts advance to national competition using a formula based on one home meet score, two away meet scores and the next highest scores. Those scores are then combined with the score obtained at the NCGA regional qualifying meet.

At the regional meet, the Blue Devils put together their highest score of the season on the floor exercise, with Lauren Seebert (Fr, Appleton), Kelli Mork (Fr, Menomonie) and Alissa Martin (Fr, Coon Rapids, Minn) all hitting personal bests. Seebert scored a personal best on the beam. Scarlett Ramey (Fr, Seattle, Wash) hit a personal best on the uneven bars and Jones hit a season best on the vault.

The NCGA National meet will be held at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., March 19-20.

JAMIE BUCHHOLTZ WINS POLE VAULT AT WIAC MEET

STEVENS POINT - UW-Stout's Jamie Buchholtz (So, Bloomer) won the pole vault event at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday, March 6 at UW-Stevens Point.

Buchholtz, who had already automatically qualified to the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships, improved on his season best by clearing the bar at 16-feet, 2-inches, two inches above the second place competitor.

Buchholtz is currently ranked second nationally in pole vault and will compete at the national meet Friday, March 12 at 5:30 p.m. at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio.

The pole vault accounted for a good deal of the Blue Devils' points at the conference meet, with Corey Knudsen (Fr, Elk Mound) placing sixth (14-9) and Matt Lausted (Fr, Menomonie) tying for eighth (13-9.25).

The Blue Devils as a team finished seventh with 51.50 points.

Troy Wyatt (Sr, Byron, Minn) just barely squeaked into the finals of the 200-meter dash by placing ninth, but made the best of his chance to place fourth in the finals of the event (22.78).

Tim Hamill (Sr, Brookfield) took a fifth in the 1500 (4:00.36) and seventh in the 5000 (14:58.31). Hamill is on the bubble for advancing to nationals, but will probably make the cut.

JACOBSON ADVANCES TO NATIONAL MEET

STEVENS POINT - Katie Jacobson (Sr, Eau Claire) came up just short to the same runner for the second consecutive day only in a different event at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday, March 6 at Stevens Point.

Jacobson, the defending WIAC 1500-meter champion, was edged by UW-Oshkosh's Rachel Milligan, the same runner to nip her the night before in 800-meter run. And again the margin was two seconds as Milligan clocked a 4-minute, 34.24-second time to Jacobson's 4:36.97.

Both times were NCAA Division III automatic qualifying times and Jacobson will compete at the National Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday, March 12 at Ohio Northern Unversity in Ada, Ohio. Jacobson also qualified automatically in the 800-meter run, but will run only the 1500 because the events are scheduled for less than two hours apart.

As a team, the Blue Devils placed seventh with 50 points.

BASEBALL TEAM DROPS BOTH GAMES IN OPENERS

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn - The UW-Stout baseball team opened their season by dropping two games to St. John's University, 5-4, 3-0, Tuesday, March 2 at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

The Blue Devils carried a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth, but the Johnnies scored two runs for the win.

Stout cracked out four extra base hits among their five total hits, but couldn't stack enough hits to score than one run in a single inning. The Blue Devils scored single runs in the first and third, but St. John's put up three runs in the bottom of the fourth.

The Blue Devils got a single run in the top of the fifth when Brad O'Connell (So, Elk Mound) sacrificed in JR Dachel (Jr, Bloomer), who had reached on an error. Ryan Hanson (Sr, Austin, Minn) scored in the top of the sixth to give Stout the lead.

O'Connell recorded a double in the first, then scored on Andy Guden's (Jr, Medford) triple. Tate Cummins (Sr, Austin, Minn) reached in the third on a double, was moved to third by an error, then stole home.

Zak Arneson (So, Barneveld) pitched the first three innings of the game, scattering only three hits, no runs and struck-out four.

In the second game, Stout got in a small hole early, hitting the first batter, then allowing him to score. The Johnnies picked up an unearned run in the fifth and got the clincher in the seventh. The Blue Devils used five pitchers in the game.

JW Dachel (Fr, Bloomer) got Stout's only hit, a two-out single in the bottom of the third.

Stout takes their annual spring break trip March 14-20 in Ft. Myers, Fla., where they will play 11 games.
