February 27, 1999BLUE DEVILS COME UP JUST SHORT TO PLATTEVILLE IN OVERTIMEPLATTEVILLE - After UW-Platteville bolted to a 14-point lead midway through the second half, chances of an upset win by UW-Stout looked slim. But the Blue Devils evaporated the Pioneer lead and took top-seeded Platteville into overtime before dropping a heart-breaking 90-88 decision in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Basketball Championship game Saturday, Feb. 27 at Platteville. With Platteville holding a 65-53 lead at the 10:22 mark of the second half, Stout (15-12) held the Pioneers scoreless for three minutes and cut the deficit to three points on the strength of six free throws, a layup by Jeremy Leibfried (Jr, Dickeyville) and a 3-pointer by Pat Von Feldt (So, Stevens Point). The Pioneers (25-2) held onto a two or three point lead until 48 seconds remaining in regulation when Andy Myers (Jr, Eau Claire) gave Stout an 80-78 lead on a basket and free throw. But the Pioneers' Mike Jones sent the game into overtime on a basket underneath. Stout took a one point lead early in overtime, but Pioneers grabbed the lead back on a jumper by Merrill Brunson. Leibfried erased that with a 3-pointer 10 seconds later. That's when the magic wore off for Stout. The Pioneers' Aaron Olson tossed in an ugly 3-pointer to give Platteville a 87-84 lead, a lead they would not relinquish. The Pioneers' did not look championship coming down the stretch, though, missing three of four free throws. Leibfried pulled Stout to within two, 88-86, with 45 seconds left. The Pioneers' did ice the game at the line, when Olson canned two shots with four seconds left and Leibfried was given an uncontested shot at the buzzer for the final 90-88 score. Leibfried led Stout with 24 points, while Ben Kuepers (Jr, Dickeyville) added 15. Von Feldt finished with 14 points and Myers and Aaron Vachowiak (So, Wausau) each had 11. Stout's leading scorer, Jeremy Preston (Sr, Madison), saw limited action due to a fever hovering near 102 degrees and was held to five points Blake Knutson provided much of the firepower for Platteville, scoring a game-high 32 points before fouling out. Olson, Brunson and Mike Jones added 15 each. February 24, 1999BLUE DEVILS EARN TRIP TO WIAC CHAMPIONSHIP GAMEMENOMONIE - Start measuring the UW-Stout men's basketball team for the glass slipper. Or just call them Cinderella. Jeremy Preston (Sr, Madison) hit a jumper with 50 seconds remaining in the game to give the Blue Devils an 83-82 lead and Jeremy Liebfried (Jr, Dickeyville) and Andy Myers (Jr, Eau Claire) each hit a single free throw to lift Stout to an 85-82 win over UW-Oshkosh, Wednesday, Feb. 24 in the WIAC Basketball Championship semi-final game at Oshkosh. The win sends Stout into Saturday's WIAC championship game. The second half was a see-saw affair, but after Preston's shot gave Stout the lead, the Blue Devil defense did not allow another Titan point, although Oshkosh did get three shots off in the final seconds.Pat Von Feldt (So, Stevens Point) led Stout with a career-high 20 points. Preston scored 18 points, Leibfried answered with 16 and Aaron Vachowiak (So, Wausau) came off the bench to score 15 points and grab six rebounds. The Titans' Brad Clark led all scorers with 34 points, while Keith Meyer added 16 and Justin Kamps 13. The Titans' held a huge statisical lead off the glass, pulling down 50 rebounds to Stout's 23. But the Blue Devils forced 17 Oshkosh turnovers, while turning the ball over 11 times. During the regular season, Oshkosh won both meetings. February 22, 1999BLUE DEVILS TRIP UP BLUGOLDS IN WIAC PLAYOFF GAMEEAU CLAIRE - UW-Stout held UW-Eau Claire for a more than a two minute stretch late in the second half, built a 10-point lead and then used the free throw line to take a 70-60 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) playoff win Monday, Feb. 22 at Zorn Arena in Eau Claire. Pat Von Feldt (So, Stevens Point) connected on a four-point play with five minutes remaining in the game to give Stout (14-11) a 54-50 lead. The Blugolds Sherm Carstenson stole the ball, then followed up with a dunk to run the score to 54-52, but Stout's Ben Kuepers (Jr, Dickeyville) took the four-point lead back with a lay-up. Carstenson followed with two free throws at the 4:21 mark, and then it was off to the races for the Blue Devils. Von Feldt hit a 3-pointer with three minutes remaining and Jeremy Leibfried (Jr, Dickeyville) followed up with a lay-up to give Stout a 10-point, 64-54 lead. The Blugolds (17-8) would not score until Matt Fermanich hit two free throws with 1:23 remaining and Carstenson followed up with two free throws to cut Stout's lead to 64-60 with just over a minute left. The Blugolds sent Stout to the line five times in the final minute and the Blue Devils connected on 6-of-10 of the final free throws. The Blugolds' Jon Wallenfelsz led all scorers with 17 points. Von Feldt led Stout with 14 points. Kuepers and Jeremy Preston (Sr, Madison) each added 13 points and Leibfried added 11.
February 25, 1999OSHKOSH CRUSHES STOUT IN WIAC SEMI-FINALOSHKOSH - UW-Oshkosh definitely had something to prove, and prove it they did as they exacted revenge on UW-Stout, the only team this season to put a blemish on the Titans' record, with a 93-45 WIAC semi-final basketball championship win Thursday, Feb. 25 at Albee Hall. The Blue Devils defeated the Titans, 74-69, Feb. 6 in Menomonie and the Titans made Stout pay in a big way. With the score 9-7 in favor of the Titans midway through the first half, Oshkosh (25-1) took off on a 20-2 run over seven minutes and went on to a 48-26 halftime score. It would only get worse for the Blue Devils (14-12) in the second half as the Titans dominated all aspects of the game and held Stout to only four points in the first ten minutes of the half - and no points in the first five minutes - utilizing a stifling full court press for most of the half. Rachel Traynor (Sr, Ellsworth) led Stout with 12 points, but scored 11 of her points in the first half. No other Blue Devil was in double digits, with only Tina McNamara (Fr, New Richmond) coming close with eight points. Heather Peterson (Jr, Altoona) was injured early in the game, came back, but did not score for the first time all season. Kristin Steckmeester from Oshkosh led all scorers with 17 points, all in the first half. Rachel Lachecki added 12 points and Kelly Warnke finished with 11 points. February 23, 1999AGGRESSIVE SECOND HALF DEFENSE LIFTS STOUT TO PLAYOFF WINMENOMONIE - After a lethargic first half, the UW-Stout women's basketball team came to life with a very aggressive full court defense and turned a deficit into a 67-46 WIAC quarterfinal basketball playoff win over UW-Stevens Point Tuesday, Feb. 23 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Stout (14-11) trailed 26-20 at halftime, but quickly turned that around as they held the Pointers (13-12) scoreless for the first 3-minutes, 22-seconds of the second half and jumped out to a 34-26 lead. During that run, all five Blue Devils on the court contributed offensively. With air tight pressure, Stout forced 16 Pointer turnovers in the second half, and caused 27 on the game. The Blue Devils, on the other hand, held onto the ball, losing only nine turnovers. Shannon Berg (Sr, Ellsworth), after scoring only two points in the first half, finished the game with 17 points. Rachel Traynor (Sr, Ellsworth) finished with 15 points and Heather Peterson (Jr, Altoona) contributed 13 points. Peterson also had five steals on the night and Stacie Anderson (So, Clayton) added four thefts. The Blue Devils could draw only air in the first half, hitting only 24 percent of their shots, but warmed up in the second half for 47 percent shooting and finished the game at 36 percent. The defense also did a turnaround, allowing the Pointers to hit 36 percent of their shots in the first half, but only 27 percent in the second. The Pointers' Kari Groshek matched Berg's 17 points, but got 12 in the first half. Carry Boehning scored 11 points. Boehning and Groshek gathered in the majority of Stevens Point's rebounds, with Boehning collecting 13 and Groshek 11. Stout held a 47-42 edge on the boards.
February 25, 1999THREE BLUE DEVILS NAMED HONORABLE MENTION, WATKINS HONOREDMENOMONIE - Three UW-Stout hockey players were named honorable mention to the all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) hockey team and Blue Devil hockey coach Terry Watkins was named as the coach of the year. Seniors Greg Foster (Roseau, Minn), Graham Lomen (Apple Valley, Minn) and Tom Schaffner (Janesville) joined Watkins on the honor list. Watkins led the Blue Devils to a 9-16-2 overall season record and a 2-6 record in the WIAC, Stout's best finish since the Blue Devils returned to varsity status during the 1996-97 season. Watkins, a 1972 Stout graduate who is a member of the UW-Stout Hall of Fame, saw his team post a 5-3-1 record over the last eight games and also had three consecutive shutouts, the first time ever in Blue Devil history. "We had kids that worked really hard," Watkins, a 1966 Cretin (St. Paul, Minn) High School graduate, said. "And that made me look good. This award adds more respect to our program." Foster, a forward who converted to defense last season, was a main factor in the Blue Devils' defensive turnaround that allowed 25 fewer goals on the season. Foster finished the season with three goals and 11 assists. Lomen, coming off back surgery, recovered the scoring touch he missed last season. Lomen led the team in scoring with 15 goals and 11 assists. Schaffner was simply the lunch pail-type player that made things happen. Schaffner scored seven goals and added 13 assists.
