Stout, which outrebounded Platteville 30-24, but shot only 42 percent to the Pioneers' 57 percent, were led by Ben Kuepers (Jr, Dickeyville) and Jeremy Preston (Sr, Madison) with 15 points. Kuepers pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, while Andy Myers (Jr, Eau Claire) added eight. The Pioneers got 12 points from Mike Jones. The contest ended the regular schedule, but the Blue Devils will return to action Monday, Feb. 22 when they travel to UW-Eau Claire for a 7 p.m. meeting with the Blugolds at Zorn Arena. Eau Claire was upset, 79-75, at UW-River Falls, Wednesday. The winner of that game will face the winner of the UW-Oshkosh/UW-Superior game.
February 17, 1999BLUE DEVILS TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS IN DOWNING PLATTEVILLEMENOMONIE - UW-Stout's Heather Peterson (Jr, Altoona) ignited a Blue Devil 14-3 run to start off the second half as Stout went on to down UW-Platteville, 89-72, Wednesday, Feb. 17, in the conference finale at Johnson Fieldhouse. Stout would go on to expand the lead to as much as 27 points and Platteville (9-15, 3-13) never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way. Shannon Berg (Sr, Ellsworth) added 16 points for the Blue Devils and Amy Zelinger (Fr, Racine) came off the bench to chip in 12. February 20, 1999YELLOWJACKETS PUT AN END TO BLUE DEVIL SEASONSUPERIOR - UW-Superior brought UW-Stout's season to a screeching halt by handing the Blue Devils an 8-1 loss in the first round of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) playoff Saturday, Feb. 20 in Superior. The Blue Devils (9-16-2) had tied the Yellowjackets the previous night by jumping out to an early 4-0 lead, but Superior made sure that wouldn't happen again by scoring six goals before Stout got their only score of the game in the third period. Brad Weappa (So, Brooklyn Center, Minn) recorded Stout's only goal, with Greg Foster (Sr, Roseau, Minn) and Graham Lomen (Sr, Apple Valley, Minn) getting the assists. Superior (19-6-2) scored midway through the first period, then scored again four minutes later. They rattled off three unanswered goals in the second period, then tacked on another for good measure to open up the third. For the first time in the four games the two teams have played over the last eight days, shots on goals were fairly even with Stout actually outshooting Superior, 35-33. Stout posted their best season record since returning to varsity status during the 1996-97 season and their 6-9-1 NCHA record was their best ever in their three seasons in the league. The Blue Devils closed the season by winning five of their last eight games. February 19, 1999BLUE DEVILS JUMP OUT, YELLOWJACKETS STORM BACK FOR TIESUPERIOR - UW-Stout, and Kevin Aube (So, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich) in particular stormed out of the games with a vengeance, but UW-Superior stormed back to record a 4-4 tie in a first round game of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) playoffs Friday, Feb. 19 at Superior. Aube scored first two goals of the game, getting assists from Tom Schaffner (Sr, Janesville) on both goals, and the Blue Devils' Josh Markelevits (So, Red Wing, Minn) and Shane Maher (So, Forest Lake, Minn) also recorded goals in the first period. Aube assisted on Maher's goal, while Maher assisted on Marklevits'. But the Yellowjackets (18-6-2), seeded No. 4 to the Blue Devils' (9-15-2) No. 5, got on the scoreboard with only six seconds remaining in the first period on a Clint Johnson goal, then added a goal with less than a minute remaining in the second stanza. Johnson got his second goal of the game seven minutes into the third period, then the Yellowjackets' Scott Wagner tied the score with nine minutes remaining in the game. The two teams had split a series just last weekend, and again the Yellowjackets attacked the Blue Devil goal hard, outshooting Stout, 40-19. The Blue Devils' Ben Plester (Fr, Chemainus, BC) stopped 36 shots.
February 17, 1999BRENNA JONES GRABS SECOND ON TWO EVENTS AT EAU CLAIREEAU CLAIRE - The UW-Stout gymnastics team flirted with 100 points again, but came up just short as they dropped a 132.25-97.45 decision at UW-Eau Claire Wednesday, Feb. 17 in the final dual meet of the season. Brenna Jones (So, St. Paul, Minn) notched a couple of second places, finishing runner-up on the vault with an 8.55 and on the floor exercise with an 8.65. February 19, 1999NOEL GREEN SETS SCHOOL RECORD IN 55-DASHRIVER FALLS - It's been at least five years since a UW-Stout women's sprinter has matched a qualifying time to the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships, but the Blue Devils' Noel Green (So, Alexandria, Minn) did it by winning the 55-meter dash in school record time at the UW-River Falls Open Friday, Feb. 19. But because the time was a handheld time, it will not be able to be used as an automatic qualifying time. Green, who had been plagued with false starts this year, clocked a time of 7.10 seconds in the 55. Green, a transfer from Bethel College, edged out a former teammate in the finals, winning at the tape with a 7.20. Katie Jacobson (Sr, Eau Claire), who is very familiar with national competition, earned an automatic berth at the nationals. Jacobson won the 800-meter run with a 2:15.80, getting the automatic qualifying time. As a team, the Blue Devils finished second to host River Falls.
