MEN'S BASKETBALL
The Blue Devils (10-13, 4-11) host two-time defending national champion UW-Platteville (18-5, 11-4), Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m to close out the regular season. Stout's Jeremy Leibfried needs three assists to break the school career record of 348 set by Brian Ellingson form 1983-87. Platteville's Merrill Brunson needs two points to reach 1500 career points. Platteville defeated Stout, 69-65, Jan. 10 in Platteville. The Blue Devils have not defeated Platteville since the final game of the 1991-92 season, but almost tripped up the Pioneers in the championship game of the 1998-99 WIAC playoffs. The WIAC playoffs begin this weekend, and a Stout win over Platteville could keep the Blue Devils out of the play-in game scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 19. Stout would need to beat Platteville, then have UW-Superior beat UW-Whitewater Wednesday to finish in a tie with Whitewater for seventh. The tie-breaker would go Stout's way. Last week: The Blue Devils split a pair of games, falling 67-54, to conference champion UW-Stevens Point, Feb. 9, the came back to down Superior, 70-59, in Superior Feb. 12. The Pioneers defeated Superior, 65-51, Feb. 9, then edged UW-La Crosse, 89-82, Feb. 16.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Blue Devils (13-10, 9-6) take to the road Wednesday, Feb. 16 to close out the regular season at UW-Platteville (11-12, 6-9). The Blue Devils defeated Platteville, 80-57, Jan. 10. Stout has won the last 11 meetings. The Blue Devils will begin play in the WIAC tournament, Monday, Feb. 21, and will probably host UW-River Falls. Stout is currently in a tie with UW-Whitewater for third place, but the Warhawks would get the tie breaker in a two-way tie. If there is a three-way tie with River Falls, Stout would get the tie breaker and the No. 3 seed. In that case, Stout would host Platteville. Last week: Stout struggled with UW-Stevens Point, but managed a comeback that fell just short, as the Pointers took a 74-67 win, Feb. 9. The Blue Devils rolled over UW-Superior, 99-45, Feb. 12.

HOCKEY
The Blue Devils (5-19-1, 1-12-1 NCHA, 0-7-1 WIAC) will enter NCHA playoff competition this weekend with a best of three series at St. Norbert College (19-4-1, 10-3-1). The first game is set for Friday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. at St. Norbert. The second game is Saturday, Feb. 19, again at St. Norbert at 7 p.m. a 20-minute mini-game would follow, if needed. Last week: The Blue Devils lost, 10-4, to UW-Eau Claire, Feb. 11, and 2-0 to UW-Stevens Point.

GYMNASTICS
The Blue Devils will be at Hamline University, Friday, Feb. 18, then travel to NCAA Division II Winona State, Monday, Feb. 21. Last week: The Blue Devils lost 165.75-165.575 to UW-Eau Claire, Feb. 7, and defeated UW-Whitewater, 166.30-163.20. Andrea Hassel broke the school record on the balance beam, then minutes later, Katie Hanson broke that record.

MEN'S TRACK & FIELD
The Blue Devils will host the WIAC/MIAC Challenge, Saturday, Feb. 19 at 1 p.m. Last week: Stout won the 18-team Warren Bowlus Invitational at UW-Stout, Feb. 11.

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
The Blue Devils will be at the UW-River Falls Invitational, Friday, Feb. 18. Last week: Stout finished 7th of 20 teams at the Warren Bowlus Invitational at UW-Stout, Feb. 11

LOEWE, VON FELDT PROVIDE SPARK AS DEVILS DOWN SUPERIOR

SUPERIOR - Dave Loewe (So, Hiles) and Pat Von Feldt (Jr, Stevens Point) sparked a UW-Stout comeback to open up the second half as the Blue Devils overcame a six point halftime deficit to down UW-Superior, 70-59, at Superior, Saturday, Feb. 12.

Loewe provided the defensive and offensive play seconds into the half when he stole the ball and went the distance for the bucket to get Stout moving.

Von Feldt, a starter who did not have a stellar first half, come off the bench in the second to score eight points in a two minute span to give Stout (10-13, 4-11) an 11 point, 49-38, lead with 12 minutes left to play. The Yellowjackets (13-10, 6-9) would not get close than 10 points the rest of the way.

Jeremy Leibfried (Sr, Dickeyville) led Stout with 20 points. Von Feldt added 15 points and Aaron Vachowiak (Jr, Wausau) 14 points. Loewe finished with seven points.

The Yellowjackets' Vince Thomas led all scorers with 25 points.

Stout shot a very presentable 58 percent from the floor in the second half and hit 54 percent of their shots in the game. Superior shot 42 percent for the game.

The win gave Blue Devil coach John Muraski his 200th career win.

Stout will close out the regular season Wednesday, Feb. 16 when they host two-time defending champion UW-Platteville at 7 p.m.

POINTERS WAKE UP AFTER FIRST 10 MINUTES, DOWN BLUE DEVILS

MENOMONIE - UW-Stevens Point hit only two of their first 14 field goals in the first 10 minutes of the game, but recovered to hand UW-Stout a 67-54 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) loss, Wednesday, Feb. 9 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

The rest of the way, the Pointers hit 21-of-38 from the field and controlled the rebounding game, holding a commanding 38-24 bulge off the glass.

Both teams shot poorly to start the game, with Stout (9-13, 3-11) hitting the first field a minute into the game, then not scoring for four minutes. The Blue Devils took advantage of the Pointers' poor shooting to jump out to a 15-9 lead at the 10 minute mark. Stevens Point (18-4, 13-2) took their first lead of the game with five minutes left in the half and never trailed again.

Stout cut the Pointer lead to 27-26 just after halftime with a shot by Jeremy Leibfried (Sr, Dickeyville), but that was as close as they would come.

Scoring-wise, it was a four person game, with the Pointers' Brant Bailey taking scoring honors with 27 points. Bailey also pulled down 12 rebounds. Stout's Aaron Vachowiak (Jr, Wausau) scored 21 points and had seven rebounds. Ben Kuepers (Sr, Dickeyville) added 16 points for Stout and the Pointers' Brent Larson finished up with 13 points.

Stevens Point finished shooting .442 (23-for-52) for the game from the floor, while Stout shot .400 (20-for-50).

BLUE DEVILS EASILY RUN PAST SUPERIOR, 99-45

MENOMONIE - During the last two seasons, the UW-Superior women's basketball team managed to take one of two games from UW-Stout. The Blue Devils made sure that was not going to happen this as Stout shot out to a 22-7 lead and went on to a 99-45 win, Saturday, Feb. 12 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Blue Devil coach Mark Thomas juggled his starting line-up to include all four seniors on Senior Day and it was off to the races.

Amy Zelinger (So, Racine) scored 14 of her 17 points in the first half and Heather Peterson (Sr, Altoona) chipped in 11 of her team-high 19 points in the first stanza as Stout took a 51-24 lead into the locker room.

All 16 Stout players hit the floor for at least five minutes of the game, and 15 scored.

The Blue Devils (13-10, 9-6) forced 32 turnovers and picked up 19 steals, with Peterson getting five.

Tanya Halbach (Fr, Janesville) scored 15 points and Aslynn Johnson (Jr, Clinton) had 10 for Stout. Terri Olsen led the Yellowjackets (6-16, 2-12) with 21 points. Stout controlled the boards, holding a 51-35 advantage. Johnson and Peterson each pulled down eight rebounds.

Stout will close out the regular season Wednesday, Feb. 16 when they travel to UW-Platteville.

BLUE DEVILS' COMEBACK FALLS SHORT

STEVENS POINT - UW-Stout's last ditch comeback came up short as the Blue Devils fell, 74-67, to UW-Stevens Point, Wednesday, Feb. 9 in Stevens Point.

The Blue Devils (12-10, 8-6) trailed 53-34 with 15 minutes remaining in the game, but pulled to within 68-65 with two minutes remaining. With Stout forced to foul, the Pointers (10-12, 5-10) answered by canning six of their next eight free throw attempts to take the win.

Stout jumped out to a 19-12 lead early, but the Pointers went off on a 19-2 run to take a 31-21 lead, then held on to a 37-29 halftime lead.

The Pointers held a significant advantage at the free throw line, hitting 25-of-38 freebies, while Stout finished up 9-of-16 from the line.

The Pointers' Jessica Ott took scoring honors, finished with 28 points, including hitting 10-of-11 free throws. Amie Schultz had 12 points.

For the Blue Devils, who are hanging to a one game lead over fifth place UW-River Falls, Heather Peterson (Sr, Altoona) scored 11 points, while Stacie Anderson (Jr, Clayton) added 10. Peterson pulled down a game high eight rebounds. The Pointers outrebounded Stout, 47-38.

BLUE DEVILS COME UP JUST SHORT TO POINTERS, LOSE 2-0

MENOMONIE - After leaving the barn door open the night before against UW-Eau Claire, the UW-Stout hockey team almost slammed the door shut on Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) champion UW-Stevens Point, but still dropped a 2-0 decision, Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

The Pointers could manage only two power play goals on the night - a shot by David Boehm midway through the second period, and another solo shot by Randy Eudek in the third.

The Blue Devils outshot the Pointers, 32-31, for the game, and came at the Pointers hard in the first period, peppering the goal for 13 shots.

Stout goalie Justin Wiskie (Fr, Janesville) stopped 31 goals, while the Pointers' Bob Gould stopped all 32 Blue Devil shots.

EAU CLAIRE WINS SHOOTOUT, DOWNS BLUE DEVILS, 10-4

MENOMONIE - In hockey's version of an old western shoot-em-up, UW-Eau Claire came out on top to down UW-Stout, 10-4, Friday, Feb. 11 at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

Eau Claire scored the first two goals of the game within five minutes of the puck dropping, but Stout (5-18-1, 1-11-1) did answer back when Andrew Fenton (Fr, Russell, Manitoba) scored on the power play with 10 minutes to play in the first period. Shane Maher (Jr, Forest Lake, Minn) assisted on the play. The Blugolds (9-14-1, 5-8-0) scored again in the period with three minutes left.

Stout's RJ Schriefer (Sr, Cottage Grove, Minn) opened up the scoring in the second at the 3:03 mark, with assists by Cullen Flaherty (Fr, Duluth, Minn) and Kevin Aube (Jr, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich).

The two teams traded goals about halfway through the period, with Eau Claire scoring first. Stout scored 10 seconds later to make the score 4-3 with Jason Jones (Sr, Plymouth, Minn) getting the goal and Andy Anderson (Jr, Burnsville, Minn) and Maher getting the assists.

Eau Claire would blow the game open over the next 28 minutes, running off three goals for a 7-3 lead halfway through the third period.

Maher would get a goal for Stout in the third, with Schriefer and Drew Nichols (So, Victoria, Minn) picking up assists.

Eau Claire's Joe Byrd would almost single-handedly destroy any thoughts of a Blue Devil comeback when he scored three goals in the final five minutes of play.

The Blugolds pelted Stout goalie Ben Plester (So, Chemainus, BC) with 47 shots on goal, while the Stout offense threw 33 shots at Eau Claire goalie Jon Walker.

The game had 18 penalties and both offenses took advantage of the situation, with Eau Claire scoring on 4of-5 power play situations and Stout netting 2-of-7 chances.

HASSEL, HANSON BREAK SCHOOL BALANCE BEAM RECORD

WHITEWATER - Records are made to be broken. Just ask UW-Stout gymnast Andrea Hassel (Jr, Grand Rapids, Minn).

As the Blue Devils were on their way to a 166.30-163.10 win over UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Feb. 12, Hassel scored a school record 9.25 on the beam. Less than 10 minutes later, teammate Katie Hanson (Fr, Duluth, Minn) established a new mark of 9.325 to take the event.

The balance beam, which was the Blue Devils' downfall in their last meet, propelled Stout to the dual win, said coach Jeff Richards.

"We were shaky on our first two events," Richards said. "Then, we did well on the floor, but we really came out and rocked on the beam."

Hanson, Hassel, Alissa Martin (So, Coon Rapids, Minn) and Lis Carlson (Fr, Brainerd, Minn) set personal bests on the beam and Erika Opoien (Fr, Superior) matched her best of the season.

Hanson took firsts on the uneven bars (8.35) and the all-around (35.45). Teammate Tasha Pasch (Fr, Northfield, Minn) tied for first on the vault (9.00) and was first on the floor exercise (9.175).

The final score was only five-one hundredths of a point short of the season high team score.

Stout returns to action Friday, Feb. 18 when they travel to Hamline University.

BLUE DEVIL GYMNASTS COME UP JUST SHORT TO EAU CLAIRE

MENOMONIE - The last time the UW-Stout and UW-Eau Claire gymnastic teams met in a dual meet at Johnson Fieldhouse, the teams tied. It looked like the same thing was possible midway through the final event, but the Blugolds pulled off a 165.75-165.575 win, Monday, Feb. 7 in Menomonie.

The teams were neck-and-neck after two rounds, but Stout had trouble on the beam, while the Blugolds knocked down their floor routines. When the teams rotated for the final round, Stout gained ground, but not enough to overtake Eau Claire. Stout's team score was their second highest of the season.

Tasha Pasch (Fr, Northfield, Minn) captured two first place finishes for the Blue Devils, notching a 9.05 on the vault and repeating the score to tie with Eau Claire's Michelle Phillips on the floor exercise.

Katie Hanson (Fr, Duluth, Minn) was first on the uneven bars (8.40) and in the all-around (34.775), and took second on the balance beam (8.625).

While not placing in the top five, Lis Carlson (Fr, Brainerd, Minn) copped career-bests on the beam (7.75) and floor (8.20).
