February 5, 2000BLUE DEVILS HOLD DOWN OSHKOSH, TAKE 64-53 WINMENOMONIE - Aaron Vachowiak (Jr, Wausau) scored 13 points in the second half and Dave Loewe (So, Hiles) came off the bench twice to spark UW-Stout to a 64-53 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) win over UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Feb. 5 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Vachowiak, who scored a team-high 21 points, dumped in four field goals in both halves, but added five free throws in the second half to help the Blue Devils (9-12, 3-10) knock off Oshkosh (12-10, 5-9) in regular season for the first time since the 1994-95 season. Loewe entered the game midway through the first half, and promptly racked up five points to give Stout a short-lived 16-13 lead. The Titans took the lead, but Vachowiak hit a layup with 4:21 left in the first half, and Stout would not trail the rest of the game. Stout held a slim 26-23 halftime lead, but the Titans tied the score after halftime. The Blue Devils went on a 23-10 run and never looked back. Loewe hit a 3-pointer and Jeremy Leibfried (Sr, Dickeyville) added another to give Stout a 49-33 lead with 10 minutes remaining. The Titans only got as close as nine points the rest of the way. Stout's aggressive defense forced 18 Oshkosh turnovers as the Blue Devils picked the Titans' pocket for 12 steals. Stout committed only two turnovers in the second half. While the Titans were turning the ball over, they also were not hitting their shots, knocking down only 19-of-48 field goals (.396). Stout hit 50 percent, finishing the game by hitting 24-of-48 shots. Oshkosh's Brad Clark led all scorers with 24 points, but Stout did not allow another Titan to hit double figures. Vachowiak's 21 points were backed up by Leibfried with 13 and Loewe with 11. Leibfried also had eight assists. Stout will host conference leading UW-Stevens Point, Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m., then will travel to UW-Superior, Saturday, Feb. 12. February 2, 2000RIVER FALLS OVERTAKES BLUE DEVILS, 68-55RIVER FALLS - UW-River Falls got a number of second and third shots and had a healthy lead at the free throw line to hand UW-Stout a 68-55 conference loss Wednesday, Feb. 2 at River Falls. The Falcons (13-7, 7-5), who held a 36-27 edge in rebounding, pulled down 13 offensive rebounds to Stout's six and shot a hot 22-for-25 from the free throw line. Stout (8-12, 2-10) hit 7-of-10 charity shots. The Falcons held a 32-28 halftime lead, but slowly stretched the lead in the second half, holding a double digit advantage for the most of the last 10 minutes of the game. Stout's Jeremy Leibfried (Sr, Dickeyville) led all scorers with 19 points. Ben Kuepers (Sr, Dickeyville) finished with 12 points and Aaron Vachowiak (Jr, Wausau) had 11. Nic Been led the Falcons with 15 points. Edmund Johnson had 12 points and Shawn Timm 11. Stout outshot River Falls from the floor, going 22-for-50 to the Falcons' 19-for-51. River Falls connected on twice as many 3-pointers, hitting 8-of-21, while Stout was 4-for-16 from beyond the arc.
February 5, 2000OSHKOSH EXPLODES IN FIRST HALF TO DOWN STOUTOSHKOSH - The last time UW-Stout and UW-Oshkosh played, the contest went into double overtime. There would be none of that the second time around as the Titans handed the Blue Devils a 98-61 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) loss Saturday, Feb. 5 at Oshkosh. The Titans (18-4, 12-2) bombed from 3-point range in the first half, hitting 7-of-12 treys as they went on a 24-9 run early in the game to run off to a commanding 37-12 lead with 6:16 left in the stanza. With the halftime score 46-28, the Titans continued to pull away throughout the second half. Heather Peterson (Sr, Altoona) scored 17 points for Stout (12-9, 8-5), which stayed tied for third with UW-Whitewater, who lost 91-65 to UW-River Falls. Amy Zelinger (So, Racine) added 14 points and Stacie Anderson (Jr, Clayton) 10. The Titans, who had five players in double digits, were led by Jennie Vosters with 20 points. Kelly McNiff had 18, Sara Hegge - who scored 12 points in the first five minutes - had 16, Jamie Turtenwald, 14 and Amanda Dickerson, 13. The Blue Devils were outrebounded, 43-30, as the Titans pulled down 30 defensive boards. Stout shot only 31 percent for the game, while Oshkosh hit 58 percent of their shots, including 53 percent of their 3-points. Stout will be at UW-Stevens Point, Wednesday, Feb. 9. Stout will close out the home portion of their schedule Saturday, Feb. 12 when they host UW-Superior at 3 p.m. February 2, 2000STOUT EXPLODES OUT OF THE LOCKER ROOM, DOWN FALCONS, 97-75MENOMONIE - Stacie Anderson (Jr, Clayton) scored seven points in the first 1-minute, 25-seconds of the second half to lead a UW-Stout explosion as the Blue Devils downed UW-River Falls, 97-75, Wednesday, Feb. 5 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Anderson, who finished with 23 points, scored the first seven points of the second stanza and Stout went on a 21-8 run over the first five minutes to run up a 61-41 lead. Stout kept the Falcons at bay the rest of the way, never letting them get any closer than 13 points. Anderson, who was 10-of-14 from the floor, wasn't the only Blue Devil to produce big numbers. Heather Peterson (Sr, Altoona) scored 14 points in the second half to finish the night with 25 points. The game was a constant parade to the foul line, with the two teams whistled for a combined 65 fouls. Stout made 24-of-33 (.727) free throw attempts, while the Falcons connected on 30-of-49 (.612). Stout shot 56 percent from the floor in the second half and finished shooting 52 percent. The Falcons hit 38 percent of their shots. Both teams applied full court pressure most of the game, accounting for 28 turnovers apiece. Andrea Bresette (Sr, Ashland) scored 13 points for Stout and Amy Zelinger (So, Racine) chipped in 12. Andrea Long scored 22 points for the Falcons, with Mara Reif-Wenner, Steph Olson and Sarah Pollock each adding 10.
February 5, 2000BLUGOLDS TOPPLE BLUE DEVILS, 5-1EAU CLAIRE - UW-Eau Claire jumped to a 4-0 lead before UW-Stout put their only point up on the board, and the Blugolds went on to hand the Blue Devils a 5-1 defeat in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) contest Saturday, Feb. 5 at Eau Claire. The Blugolds scored a solo goal in the first period, then scored twice within a minute early in the second period, with the first goal coming on a penalty shot. Eau Claire (8-14-1, 4-8-0) scored again three minutes into the third period. Stout (5-17-1, 1-10-1) finally broke the shutout with less than four minutes remaining when Jason Jones (Sr, Plymouth, Minn) broke the drought on the power play. Jones got assists from Brad Weappa (Jr, Brooklyn Center, Minn) and RJ Schriefer (Sr, Cottage Grove, Minn). Eau Claire added another goal with 30 seconds remaining in the game.Stout goalie Justin Wiskie (Fr, Janesville) recorded 37 saves, while Blugold goalie Jon Walker stopped 32 shots. The Blue Devils will entertain the Blugolds Friday, Feb. 11, then will close out the regular season Saturday, Feb. 12 when they host UW-Stevens Point. February 4, 2000POINTERS BLANK BLUE DEVILS, 3-0STEVENS POINT - UW-Stevens Point scored one goal in each period and went on to down UW-Stout, 3-0, in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) contest Friday, Feb. 4 in Stevens Point. The Pointers (17-5-0, 10-1-0) scored a power play goal with two minutes remaining in the first period, added a short handed goal with two minutes left in the second and topped off the scoring with an even goal midway through the third. Stout (5-16-1, 1-9-1) goalie Justin Wiskie (Fr, Janesville) turned away 36 shots on the night. The game also counted in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) standings.
February 4, 2000ANDREA HASSEL SETS CAREER HIGHS AT LA CROSSE MEETLA CROSSE - The young UW-Stout gymnastics team got a taste of what national competition would be like as they competed in the 19th Gershon/McLellan Invitational Friday, Feb. 4 at UW-La Crosse. The Blue Devils finished fifth of five teams, but Andrea Hassel (Jr, Grand Rapids, Minn) set career-highs on the balance beam and in the all-around to highlight Stout's performance. Hassel finished fourth on the balance beam, snapping her previous best with a score of 8.775 in the event. Hassel finished 11th in the all-around, but established a personal best 32.25. Tasha Pasch (Fr, Northfield, Minn) picked up the Blue Devils' only other top 10 finish in the individual events, placing fourth on the vault by matching her season-high score of 9.20. Pasch was seventh in the all-around (33.50). Defending National Collegiate Gymnastics Associaton (NCGA) La Crosse took first. Winona State, a upper-echelon NCAA Division II program finished second, and nationally ranked Hamline finished third. Stout scored 161.925 points. February 5, 2000TWINING WEAVES TWO TOP EIGHT FINISHES AT POINT MEETSTEVENS POINT - Mike Twining (So, Clear Lake) had two top eight finishes and three UW-Stout pole vaulters finished in the top five as the Blue Devils placed eighth at the Eastbay Invitational Saturday, Feb. 5 in Stevens Point. Twining placed fifth in the 200-meter dash (23.39) and seventh in the 55-meter dash (6.80). Jamie Buchholtz (Jr, Bloomer) was second in the pole vault (14-11). Teammates Jeff Rotering (So, Waumandee) and Bob Cahow (Jr, New Brighton, Minn) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Freshman David Hanson (Sun Prairie) was fifth in the 55-hurdles (8.25). Steve Quackenbush (Jr, McFarland), who is recovering from an ankle injury, placed sixth in the high jump (6-2). Mike Bethke (Sr, Mondovi) was sixth in the shot put (48-2.50). Dave Luety 33-8.50; February 2, 2000STOUT'S JAMIE BUCHHOLTZ NAMED FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEKMENOMONIE - UW-Stout pole vaulter Jamie Buchholtz (Jr, Bloomer) was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) field athlete of the week for his performance at the Blugold Invitational Friday, Jan. 28 in Eau Claire. Buchholtz assured himself of a repeat trip to the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships when he hit the automatic qualifying height of 15-feet, 8.25-inches to easily win the event. Buchholtz last season won the WIAC pole vault titles in both the indoor and outdoor meets, and was the runner-up at both national events.
February 5, 2000LISA SORVALA PLACES SECOND IN 3000 AT EASTBAY INVITESTEVENS POINT - Lisa Sorvala (Fr, New Brighton, Minn) finished just four seconds off the pace and finished second in the 3000-meter run at the 14-team Eastbay Invitational Saturday, Feb. 5 in Stevens Point. Sorvala finished in a time of 10-mintues, 58.25-seconds. Teammate Katie Kuffel (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn) placed fifth (11:12.58). Sara Pivec (So, Coon Rapids, Minn) placed fourth in the shot put with a toss of 40-feet, 1.25-inches. Michelle Abramczak (Jr, Stanley) was seventh in the 55-meter hurdles (9.54).
