January 30, 1999BLUGOLDS CONTROL GAME UNDERNEATH TO KNOCK OFF STOUTMENOMONIE - UW-Stout's Ben Kuepers (Jr, Dickeyville) pulled down 10 rebounds. That was the good news for Stout. The bad news was Kuepers recorded 38 percent of Stout's rebounds as UW-Eau Claire controlled the game underneath and handed the Blue Devils a 79-56 loss Saturday, Jan. 30 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Stout was outrebounded, 43-26, and could only pull down 14 defensive rebounds to the Blugolds 27. Besides Kuepers, Stout's men underneath managed only five rebounds. Stout's scoring game underneath also didn't help the Blue Devils, with the big men combining for 13 points. Stout (11-8, 4-7) still managed to put three players in double figures with Jeremy Preston (Sr, Madison) and Pat Von Feldt (So, Stevens Point) leading the way with 13 points. Jeremy Leibfried (Jr, Dickeyville) plunked in 12 points, but eight of those came at the free throw line. The Blugolds (14-5, 8-3), meanwhile had four players in double figures, most of them roaming around in the paint. Jon Wallenfelsz led all scorers with 22 points and matched Kuepers with 10 rebounds. Sherm Carstensen added 14 points, Ben Schneeberger 13 and Dave Mellenthin 12. Mellenthin and Schneeberger each recorded eight rebounds. The Blue Devils started off the game going stone cold from the line, finding themselves down 31-10 before they made a move late in the first half and at the beginning of the second half, cutting the lead to four points, trailing 35-31. The Blugolds ripped off seven straight points and it was off to the races for Eau Claire. Stout will host UW-River Falls Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. in Johnson Fieldhouse.
January 30, 1999EAU CLAIRE BUILDS UP BIG LEAD AND COASTS TO WIN OVER STOUTEAU CLAIRE - UW-Stout had five players in double digits. The trouble for the Blue Devils came when they had only seven players score as they dropped a 94-72 decision to UW-Eau Claire Saturday, Jan. 30, at Zorn Arena in Eau Claire. Eau Claire (17-1, 10-1) jumped out to a 50-35 halftime lead and consistently held Stout (9-10, 6-5) at bay throughout the game to drop the Blue Devils below the .500 mark. The Blugolds' Jayme Anderson led all scorers with 26 points, while Allison Berg added 18 points and Jacquie Vinje popped in 16. Stout was led by Shannon Berg (Sr, Ellsworth) with 18 points. Amy Zelinger (Fr, Racine) came off the bench to score 12 points. Rachel Traynor (Sr, Ellsworth) and Andrea Bresette (Jr, Ashland) each had 11 points and Heather Peterson (Jr, Altoona) finished with eight points. The Blue Devils will travel to UW-River Falls Wednesday, Feb. 3.
January 30, 1999BLUE DEVILS SCORE SECOND CONSECUTIVE SHUTOUTMENOMONIE - For the first time in UW-Stout varsity hockey history, the Blue Devils recorded back-to-back shutout victories as they blanked St. Scholastica, 5-0, for the second consecutive night Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Dunn County Ice Arena. The Blue Devils (6-14-1, 3-8-1) had held the Saints (6-16-0, 2-12-0) scoreless the previous night, notching a 4-0 win. Five different Blue Devils scored as Stout scored in every period, and again held a very definite advantage in offense, outshooting the Saints, 48-25. Graham Lomen (Sr, Apple Valley, Minn), Stout's leading scorer, opened the night with a goal with four-minutes, 10-seconds gone in the first period. Greg Foster (Sr, Roseau, Minn) and Mark Corbett (Sr, New Hope, Minn) provided the assists. Joshua Marklevits (So, Red Wing, Minn) recorded his second goal in as many nights, getting an assist from Corbett at the 8:59 mark of the second. Corbett provided his third assist of the night when he, and Matt Olson (Fr, Buffalo, Minn), aided Tom Schaffner (Sr, Janesville) midway through the third period. Stout ended the game in a flurry, scoring twice in the final two minutes, with Kevin Aube (So, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich) getting an unassisted goal with 1:13 remaining. Kevin Morrissey (Sr, Burnsville, Minn) finished off the evening with 10 seconds remaining. Assisting on the play was Joe Berry (Fr, Apple Valley, Minn) and Kelly Selix (Sr, Elk River, Minn). Goalie Todd Sether (Sr, International Falls, Minn) recorded his first shutout as a Blue Devil.Stout will close the home portion of their schedule when they host Lake Forest Feb. 5-6. The Friday, Feb. 5 game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., while the Saturday, Feb. 6 game is set for 2 p.m.
January 29, 1999BLUE DEVILS MOVE UP IN STANDINGS, SHUT OUT SCHOLASTICAMENOMONIE - Not only did the UW-Stout hockey team record their second shutout of the season, but more importantly, they moved up in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) standings by blanking St. Scholastica, 4-0, Friday, Jan. 29 at the Dunn County Ice Arena. The Blue Devils (5-14-1, 2-8-1) wasted little time taking the lead. On only their second line shift of the night, Luke Murray (Jr, Bloomington, Minn) blasted home the first goal one-minute, 35-seconds into the game, taking the pass from Greg Foster (Sr, Roseau, Minn). Three minutes later, Stout scored again when Josh Marklevits (So, Red Wing, Minn) got assists from Kelly Selix (Sr, Elk River, Minn) and Brad Weappa (So, Brooklyn Center, Minn). Not content to sit on the 2-0 lead, the Blue Devils' Kevin Aube (So, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich) scored 48 seconds into the second stanza. RJ Schreifer (Jr, Cottage Grove, Minn) recorded the assist.Working the Saints for 20 shots in the second period, Stout put the game on ice with only 26 seconds left in the second when Joe Berry (Fr, Apple Valley, Minn) scored the final goal of the game. Marklevits and Weappa recorded the assists. The Stout defense played one of their strongest games of the season, allowing only 17 shots on goal, with Ben Plester (Fr, Chemainus, B.C.) getting the win and his second collegiate shutout. Stout outshot the Saints, 46-17.
January 27, 1999BLUE DEVILS HIT SEASON-BEST ON VAULTMENOMONIE - All five UW-Stout gymnasts competing in the vault set either personal bests or season bests, but the rest of the exercises didn't experience the same sense of euphoria as the Blue Devils dropped a 137.50-96.86 decision to Gustavus Adolphus, Wednesday, Jan. 27 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Brenna Jones (So, St. Paul, Minn) led the way on the vault, placing second in hitting an 8.70, just .025 short of her personal best. Lauren Seebert (Fr, Appleton) scored an 8.20, Andrea Hassel (So, Grand Rapids, Minn) a 7.90, Scarlett Ramey (So, Seattle, Wash) a 7.70 and Kelli Mork (Fr, Menomonie) a 7.60 - all personal bests. As a group, the vault team scored a season-high 32.50. Things didn't go quite so well the rest of the way, with only Ramey and Seebert clearing any more personal marks, both on the floor exercise. Seebert hit a 7.90 and Ramey a 7.35 on the floor. The Blue Devils return to action Tuesday, Feb. 2 when they host UW-River Falls at 7 p.m. at Johnson Fieldhouse.
