January 23, 1999WHITEWATER TAKES OVER IN SECOND HALF, DOWNS STOUT WHITEWATER - UW-Whitewater jumped all over UW-Stout early in the second half as the Warhawks downed the Blue Devils, 86-77, in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Whitewater, Saturday, Jan. 23. The Warhawks, holding a 41-36 halftime lead, allowed Stout to tighten the score, 45-41, then went on a 13-2 run, then stretched the lead to 18 points at 5:32 before Stout (11-7, 4-6) began to chip away at the lead, but could only get down to six points twice. Stout's Ben Kuepers (Jr, Dickeyville) led all scorers with 25 points, one short of his career high, before fouling out. Jeremy Preston (Sr, Madison) added 19 points and Aaron Vachowiak (So, Wausau) chipped in 11. The Warhawks (14-3, 7-3) had four players in double figures, with Graham Diemer leading the way with 22 points. Jaron Perry had 18 points, Rich Hofmaster 14 and Andre Hicks, 11. A key to the game was the play of Whitewater's bench, which outscored Stout's bench 35-7. Both teams feasted at the free throw line, with Stout making 22-of-32 shots, while the Warhawks shot 88 percent, hitting 28-of-32. Five players fouled out in the game, three for Whitewater, two for Stout. The Blue Devils return to action Saturday, Jan. 30 when they host UW-Eau Claire at Johnson Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. January 20, 1999EAGLES DOWN BLUE DEVILS IN FINAL SECONDS MENOMONIE - UW-La Crosse's Paul Manchester hit a 3-pointer with 16 seconds remaining in the game to hand UW-Stout an 82-80 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) loss Wednesday, Jan. 20 at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Blue Devils (11-6, 4-5) led for the majority of the game, but a steal by Manchester led up to the winning shot. Stout had a 43-32 halftime lead, and carried the lead throughout the game, losing the lead only in the final 16 seconds. The Eagles' (9-8, 3-6) Steve Tracy led all scorers with 27 points, and Manchester finished with 24 points. The Blue Devils were led by Aaron Vachowiak (So, Wausau) with 17 points. Jeremy Preston (Sr, Madison) added 16, Scott Klimek (Fr, Stevens Point) 12 and Andy Myers (Jr, Eau Claire) 11. The teams blistered the net in the second half, with the Eagles' hitting 62 percent of their field goals and the Blue Devils nailing 64 percent. On the game, La Crosse hit 52 percent and the Blue Devils 53 percent.
January 23, 1999UW-STOUT HANGS ON FOR WILD WIN OVER WHITEWATER MENOMONIE - Using a stifling full-court press in the first half, the UW-Stout women's basketball team shot out to 43-25 halftime lead, but then had hang on for the ride as they edged past UW-Whitewater, 73-70, in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest at Johnson Fieldhouse Saturday, Jan. 23. The Blue Devils (9-9, 6-4) forced 14 Warhawk turnovers in the first half, and turned several of those turnovers into points, building lead to as much as 21 points with 6:13 remaining before halftime. The Warhawks (12-5, 7-3) then began to pound hard underneath, where they held a decided different in size, to chip away at the lead, pulling to within 69-67, primarily on three consecutive baskets by Vanessa Rieder, a 6-foot, 5-inch post player. Stout's Heather Peterson (Jr, Altoona) gave Stout a four point, 71-69, lead with 1:22 left to play. The Warhawks forced a Blue Devils runrover, then Rieder tightened the score to 71-69. Stout turned the ball over again, then fouled Rieder with 16 seconds remaining. Rieder hit the back end of the shots and the score was 71-70. Kate Lapacek fouled Rachel Traynor (Sr, Ellsworth) on the inbound pass, and Traynor drained the shots with 15 seconds left for the final score. Traynor led all scorers with 21 points, getting 14 in the first half, including several coast-to-coast steals. Peterson finished with 18 points and Shannon Berg (Sr, Ellsworth) had 13 points. Rieder led the Warhawks with 20 points, and Courtney Fetchmeyer added 13. The win put Stout to the .500 mark for the first time this season. Stout will be at UW-Eau Claire Saturday, Jan. 30. January 20, 1999BLUE DEVILS COME BACK TO DOWN LA CROSSE LA CROSSE - Trailing 42-33 one minute into the second half, the UW-Stout women's basektball team used a 14-3 spurt to jump ahead of UW-La Crosse and go on to down the Eagles, 81-75, Wednesday, Jan. 20 in La Crosse. The Blue Devils (8-9, 5-4) utilized a team effort, forcing several Eagle turnovers as six different Stout players contributed points during the spurt, which was started with a layup by Andrea Bresette (Jr, Ashland). Bresette also added two free throws and jumper during the run. The Blue Devils never trailed again and built the lead up to as much as 10 points with six minutes remaining. Stout's bench easily outplayed the Eagles (5-12, 1-8) bench, ripping off 35 points to La Crosse's 13. The Blue Devils were led by Heather Peterson (Jr, Altoona) with 15 points and eight rebounds. Bresette led the crew off the bench with 12 points, while Amy Zelinger (Fr, Racine) had 11 points and Tina McNamara (Fr, New Richmond) finished with 10 points. Starter Tina Gillen (Fr, Northfield) added 10 points. The Eagles' Becky Bohringer led all scorers with 18 points and Alisha Erickson contributed 16. Stout controlled the boards, pulling down 51 caroms to La Crosse's 40.
January 23, 1999GREEN KNIGHTS KEEP BLUE DEVILS IN CHECK DE PERE - UW-Stout could capitalize on only one of nine power play opportunities and fell, 5-2, to St. Norbert, Saturday, Jan. 23 in De Pere. The Blue Devils' (4-1-14-1, 1-8-1) only power play goal came late in the game when Graham Lomen (Sr, Apple Valley, Minn) scored the final goal of the game, on assists from Greg Foster (Sr, Roseau, Minn) and RJ Schriefer (Jr, Cottage Grove, Minn). St. Norbert (14-2-3, 9-1-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, but Stout's Mark Corbett (Sr, New Hope, Minn) took an assist from Lomen and Luke Murray (Jr, Bloomington, Minn) to make the score 2-1 with nine minutes gone in the period. But the Green Knights put an end to any Stout comeback, scoring a goal a minute later, then adding two more midway through the third period. Stout returns home after more than 30 days without a home game when they host St. Scholastica Jan. 29-20 at the Dunn County Ice Arena, with both games starting at 7:30 p.m. January 22, 1999ST. NORBERT SCORES FIVE STRAIGHT GOALS TO UPEND STOUT DE PERE - UW-Stout took a 2-1 lead on goals by Luke Murray (Jr, Bloomington, Minn) and Greg Foster (Sr, Roseau, Minn), but St. Norbert scored five goals after that and went on to down the Blue Devils, 7-3, at the DePere Ice Arena Friday, Jan. 22. The Green Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period, but Murray and Foster answered back with a vengeance in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association contest. St. Norbert spread their five goals over the second and third periods before Stout's Kelly Selix (Sr, Elk River, Minn) answered with a consolation goal. Murray picked up the assist. St. Norbert closed out the game with a final goal.
January 23, 1999JONES TAKES FOURTH ON FLOOR TO LEAD BLUE DEVILS EAU CLAIRE - Brenna Jones (So, St. Paul, Minn) finished fourth on the floor exercise and eighth in the all-around competition to lead UW-Stout at the UW-Eau Claire Winter Wonderland Gymnastics Invitational Saturday, Jan. 23. Jones scored an 8.85 on the floor and a 31.450 in the all-around. Andrea Hassel (So, Grand Rapids, Minn) finished seventh on the balance beam with an 8.15. As a team, the Blue Devils finished fifth in the five-team event, scoring 95.35 points. The meet was a near preview to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) meet which will be hosted by UW-Stout Feb. 26. UW-La Crosse was the only WIAC school not at the meet. Stout plays host to Gustavus Adolphus Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. UW-Eau Claire Winter Wonderland Invitational Individual Finishes January 18, 1999BLUE DEVIL GYMNASTS CONTINUE TO SHOW IMPROVEMENTMENOMONIE - Armed with a team of only six gymnasts, the UW-Stout gymnastics team continues to show improvement as the Blue Devils nearly cracked the 100 point mark, falling to national power Hamline University, 140.60-99.775, Monday, Jan. 18 at Johnson Fieldhouse. In each of their matches this season, Stout has improved on their previous scores, and coach Jeff Richards has added gymnasts to his line-up card, completing line-ups in the vault and floor exercise. Brenna Jones (So, St. Paul, Minn) was the only gymnast to crack the top four, placing fourth on the floor exercise with an 8.65. Jones finished with a season-high 32.40 in the all-around. Andrea Hassel (So, Grand Rapids, Minn) had her best night as a Blue Devil, hitting career highs on the vault (7.65), balance beam (8.50) and floor exercise (8.55). Freshman Lauren Seebert (Appleton) also had a good night, hitting career bests on the vault (7.925), beam (8.10) and floor (7.15). As a team, the Blue Devils showed vast improvement on the beam and floor, scoring nearly four points over their season high on both events. Stout will be at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational Saturday, Jan. 23, then return home to host Gustavus Adolphus, Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m.

January 23, 1999BLUE DEVIL MEN OPEN TRACK SEASON BY WINNING OWN MEET MENOMONIE - By winning nine different events at their own meet, the UW-Stout men's track & field team got off to good start by winning their own UW-Stout Blue Devil Track Classic Saturday, Jan. 23 at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Blue Devils proved tough in the longer sprints, taking one-two finishes in the 400 meter dash and 600-meter and winning the 800-meter. Billy Busch (Sr, Dickeyville) won the 400 in 51.84 seconds with Troy Wyatt (Sr, Byron, Minn) right behind at 51.88. John Hanson (Fr, Grantsburg) took the 600 in 1:25.62 and Dustin Green (Fr, Bensonville, Ill) was second (1:26.09). Josh Johnson (Fr, Oregon) won the 800 in 1:59.74. One of the most anticipated events was the pole vault, where Stout's Jamie Buchholtz (So, Bloomer) nipped his brother, Josh of UW-La Crosse, on fewer misses, with both clearing 15-feet, 1.75-inches, meeting the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying height. Also taking first for Stout were: Ryan Hill (Sr, Chetek) in the 5000 (15:52.90); Jesse Hunter (So, La Farge) in the 200-hurdles (25.80); Eric Moe (Fr, Whitehall) in the triple jump (43-7.75); Mike Bethke (Jr, Mondovi) in the shot put (47-7.25) and the 4x200 relay team (1:35.48). January 23, 1999JACOBSON WINS MILE RUN AT STOUT TRACK OPENER MENOMONIE - UW-Stout's Katie Jacobson (Sr, Eau Claire) picked up right where she left off last season, and won the one-mile run at the UW-Stout Blue Devil Track Classic. Jacobson cruised the field at 5-minutes, 19.33-seconds, finishing more than four seconds ahead of the University of Minnesota's Rachel Domenichetti. As a team, the Blue Devils finished ninth in the 11-team field. Noel Green (So, Alexandria, Minn) finished second in a field of 31 runners in the 55-meter dash (7.47). Also finishing second for the Blue Devils was Katy Olsen (Sr, Rice Lake) in the 3000-meter run (10:50.81). Michelle Abramzcak (So, Stanley) picked up a couple of third place finishes in the hurdles, placing third in the 200 (31.33) and 55 (9.10).
