January 8, 2000TITANS USE STRONG SECOND HALF TO GET IN FRONT OF BLUE DEVILSOSHKOSH - UW-Stout kept UW-Oshkosh's scoring ace, Brad Clark, completely silent in the first half, but his buddies picked up the slack and the Titans used a strong second half to take a 73-67 conference decision over the Blue Devils, Saturday, Jan. at Oshkosh. Even without Clark, who had been averaging 22 points per game, in scoring form, the Titans (8-5, 2-4) built up a seven point lead, but Stout (6-7, 0-5) did cut the deficit to 32-29 at haltime, then came within one point right after halftime. But that would be it. The Titans' Aric Vaubel took over in the second half, scoring 16 of his game-high 22 points and Oshkosh built up as much as a 14 point lead. Stout was led by Jeremy Leibfried (Sr, Dickeyville) with 20 points. Pat Von Feldt (Jr, Stevens Point) chipped in 19 points, hitting 5-of-11 3-pointers. Aaron Vachowiak (Jr, Wausau) had 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Justin Kamps had 18 points for Oshkosh and Scott Sowinski 10. Clark finished with nine points. The Blue Devils will be at UW-Oshkosh Saturday, Jan. 8, at UW-Platteville, Monday, Jan. 10 and at UW-Stevens Point, Wednesday, Jan. 12. January 5, 2000FALCONS RUN PAST BLUE DEVILS TO START THE SECONDMENOMONIE - After UW-Stout opened the second half with five points to take the lead, UW-River Falls went on a 10-0 run and the Blue Devils could not recover as they dropped a 67-55 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) decision to the Falcons Wednesday, Jan. 5 at Johnson Fieldhouse. With the Falcons (8-4, 2-2) holding a 26-22 halftime lead, Stout (6-6, 0-4) looked like they may get going coming out of the locker room after Aaron Vachowiak (Jr, Wausau) scored a bucket, then drained a free throw to complete the three point play. Pat Von Feldt (Jr, Stevens Point) added a jumper a minute later to give Stout their only lead of the half, 27-26. Following a River Falls free throw, the Falcons' Ed Johnson scored five points to lead the charge as River Falls rolled off 10 points. River Falls, which shot 44 percent from the free throw line, then made three more charity shots and River Falls built up a double digit lead, which they held for the final six minutes. River Falls had three players score 15 points - Shawn Timm, who drained three 3-pointers in the second half, Pat Ptacek and Sulieman Holman. Kent Becker added 10. Vachowiak led the Blue Devils with 15 points. Jeremy Leibfried (Sr, Dickeyville) scored 13 points - including his 1000th career point midway through the second half. Ben Kuepers (Sr, Dickeyville) added 10 points and nine rebounds.
January 8, 2000OSHKOSH HAS THE ANSWER FOR STOUTMENOMONIE - Every time UW-Stout would get a slight upper hand, UW-Oshkosh would find an answer as the nationally ranked Titans found their way to an 83-75 double overtime win over the Blue Devils Saturday, Jan. 8 at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Blue Devils (7-6, 3-2) held small leads throughout much of the first half, but the Titans (12-2, 6-0) did grab a 28-27 halftime lead, then led for most of the second half. Stout tied the game seven times in the second half, and took the lead, 60-58, with 38 seconds remaining when Aslynn Johnson (Jr, Clinton) scored on a jumper and canned the free throw after being fouled. But there is a reason the Titans are rated ninth in the country, and Jennifer Deuster hit a layup with two seconds remaining to tie the game at 60-60 in regulation. The teams traded leads throughout the first overtime and Stout took a 71-68 lead after Heather Peterson (Sr, Altoona) scored, then second later stole she the ball and raced in for a lay-up with about a minute left. But the Titans had the answer again, this time when Jamie Turtenwald canned a 3-pointer to tie at 71-71. The answer for the Titans in the decisive and second overtime session came at the free throw line. After Stout's Tanya Halbach (Fr, Janesville) and Jessie Herrman (Fr, Barron) hit back-to-back jumpers to open the period and give Stout a four-point lead, Oshkosh tied the game, took a two point lead, then proceeded to hit 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch. Stout did not score in the final four minutes, 34-seconds of the game. Tenacious defense was the name of the game, as both teams forced turnovers. Stout tallied 16 steals on their way to forcing 36 Oshkosh turnovers, while the Titans forced 29 Stout turnovers. The Titans' Amanda Dickerson led all scorers with 24 points. Jennie Vosters finished with 18 and Kelly McNiff 12. Andrea Bresette (Sr, Ashland) led Stout with 23 points. Peterson finished the afternoon with 17 points and Halbach had 14. Stout will host UW-Platteville Monday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m., UW-Stevens Point, Wednesday, Jan. 12, and will be at UW-Superior Saturday, Jan. 15. January 5, 2000STOUT HANDS COACH THOMAS 200th WIN WITH VICTORY OVER FALLSRIVER FALLS - In a typically hard-fought battle between two longtime foes, UW-Stout gave Blue Devil coach Mark Thomas his 200th career win with a 78-74 win over UW-River Falls Wednesday, Jan. 5 at River Falls. Stout (7-5, 3-1) led nearly the entire game, but the pesky Falcons (6-6, 1-3) never fell behind more than six points in the final 19 minutes of play, and tied the game with 5:40 remaining at 65-65 when Andrea Long made the front end of two charity shots. Jamie Retzloff (So, Eleva) scored her only basket of the game to give Stout the lead back, a lead they would hold the rest of the way. Stout, who had been struggling at the line, made five of six three throw down the stretch to hold the Falcons at bay. The Falcons still had a opportunity with 37 seconds left when Bev Gefeke canned a 3-pointer to pull to within 76-74. Following three timeouts, Stout's Jessie Herrman (Fr, Barron) made a layup as time ran out for the four-point advantage. The Falcons' Long led all scorers with 21 points. Stout got double digit scoring from Amy Zelinger (So, Racine) with 18, Stacie Anderson (Jr, Clayton) with 16 - plus eight steals - and Andrea Bresette (Sr, Ashland) with 14.
January 8, 2000BLUE DEVILS SNAP FOUR GAME SKID WITH 3-2 WIN OVER GUSTAVUSST. PETER, Minn - The UW-Stout hockey team snapped a four-game losing streak by scattering a goal in each period to down Gustavus Adolphus, 3-2, Saturday, Jan. 8 in St. Peter, Minn. While Stout (4-11-1) never trailed in the game, Gustavus (5-7-1) managed to bring the game back to even twice. Stout opened up the scoring midway through the first period when Shane Maher (Jr, Forest Lake, Minn) got assists from Andrew Fenton (Fr, Russell, Manitoba) and Steve Holeczy (Sr, Lincolnshire, Ill). The Gusties knotted the score less than three minutes later when Matt Tuccitto scored. The game remained tied until well into the second period when Kevin Aube (Jr, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich) scored on the power play, getting an assist from Drew Nichols (So, Victoria, Minn). Gustavus tied the score again, this time with eight minutes remaining in the game when Aaron Aller scored on a power play. Seth Nelson (Fr, Grand Rapids, Minn) got the game winner when he scored his second goal of the season at the 13:36 mark. Josh Marklevits (Jr, Red Wing, Minn) got the assist. Stout goalie Justin Wiskie (Fr, Janesville) picked up his third win of the season, stopping 30 shots. Gustavus goalie Peet Mosely turned away 23 shots. Stout returns to the ice Tuesday, Jan. 18 when they host Hamline University at 7:30 p.m. at the Dunn County Ice Arena. January 7, 2000STRONG THIRD PERIOD LIFTS ST. OLAF PAST STOUT, 4-2MENOMONIE - St. Olaf scored three goals in the third period to pull past UW-Stout, 4-1, in a non-conference contest Friday, Jan. 7 at the Dunn County Ice Arena. After the teams traded goals in the first and second periods, the Oles (7-5-1) scored two goals within two minutes midway through the third to take a 3-1 lead. Craig Newman scored at the 7:27 mark and Brian Meyer added another at 9:40. The Blue Devils (3-11-1) pulled to within striking range when Joe Berry (So, Apple Valley, Minn) took a pass from Ben Mosier (Fr, St. Paul, Minn) with 10:10 off the clock. But the Oles had the answer when Nate Olsen went top shelf with less than four minutes remaining. The Oles scored first in the game when Justin Bronce scored halfway through the first. Stout knotted the score in the second when Kevin Aube (Jr, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich) snagged a pass from RJ Schreifer (Sr, Cottage Grove, Minn) while he was being spun around by an Ole defender and scored from near the blue line. Stout outshot the Oles, 33-29, but the Oles goalie Jake Bullard stopped 31 shots, while Stout's Justin Wiskie (Fr, Janesville) stopped 25.
January 8, 2000GYMNASTS STRUGGLE IN FIRST TWO EVENTS, COME BACK IN FINAL TWOOSHKOSH - The UW-Stout gymnastics team struggled on the vault and uneven bars, but came back to improve on their previous season highs on the balance beam and the floor exercise. Stout was edged by UW-Oshkosh, 165.80-160.275, Saturday, Jan. 8 at Oshkosh. Tasha Pasch (Fr, Northfield, Minn) paced all gymnasts on the beam, scoring an 8.7 to place first. Pasch took a second on the vault with an 8.475 and was second in the all-around with a 33.375. The story of the meet for the Blue Devils may have been the performance of Brenna Jones (Jr, Highland Park, Minn), who injured a leg in warm-ups. Jones came back to place fifth in the all-around (31.95) and nabbed a third place on the floor (8.975). The Blue Devils return to action Monday, Jan. 17 when they host UW-River Falls at 7 p.m. in Johnson Fieldhouse. UW-Oshkosh 165.80, UW-Stout 160.275(first place, all Stout competitors) Vault: 1.
