BLUE DEVILS FALL TO NCAA DIVISION II CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Despite a solid performance from post play Aaron Vachowiak (Jr, Wausau), UW-Stout could never quite get in gear and lost a 63-58 non-conference contest to Concordia-St. Paul, Thursday, Dec. 30 in St. Paul, Minn.

Vachowiak was 7-of-8 from the floor for 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead Stout, which trailed 35-28 at halftime.

Stout (6-5) took a brief lead early in the second half when Vachowiak scored to open the stanza and Jeremy Leibfried (Sr, Dickeyville) scored two buckets and Dave Larson (So, LaCrescent, Minn) added another to give Stout a 36-35 short-lived lead.

While never able to make a hard charge, the Bears (4-6) kept Stout at bay, holding a three to four point lead throughout most of the second half.

Stout shot only 37 percent from the floor and made 9-of-14 free throws.

Pat Von Feldt (Jr, Stevens Point) scored 13 points for the Blue Devils. Ben Bauer came off the bench for the Bears, scored 14 points. Endo Aranbarri and Brandon Newman each scored 10.

The Blue Devils were playing without Ben Kuepers (Sr, Dickeyville), who was injured during practice earlier in the week.

Stout returns to conference play next when they host UW-River Falls Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. Stout will be at UW-Oshkosh Saturday, Jan. 8 and at UW-Platteville Monday, Jan. 10.

BLUE DEVILS FALL IN DOUBLE OVERTIME TO MILLIKIN

MENOMONIE - UW-Stout overcame a 20-point deficit during the second half to force overtime, but the Blue Devils fell to nationally ranked Millikin University in double overtime, 107-104, Thursday, Dec. 30 in Stout's Snowflake Jamboree.

It was white knuckle time for everyone during the final 20 minutes of play as Stout chipped away at the lead beginning a run with about seven minutes remaining in regulation.

Andrea Bresette (Sr, Ashland), playing with four fouls, returned to the floor to do a lot of the chipping, scoring six points over a two minute stretch to pull Stout to 79-75 with four minutes left in regulation.

After Tanya Halbach (Fr, Janesville) tied the game with 3:44 left, Amy Zelinger (So, Racine) gave Stout their first lead of the game 30 seconds later, nailing two free throws.

But the free throw line would not be kind to Stout - and was very generous to Millikin (8-1), who came back to take the lead at the line when Kris Kwansy hit four straight freebies to put Millikin up 86-85 with one minute left.

Stout's Aslynn Johnson (Jr, Clinton), after grabbing a defensive rebound, hit the back end of two throws with four seconds remaining to knot the game at 86.

Millikin took a five point, 93-88, lead in the first overtime, with five of their seven points coming from the line. Bresette pulled stout to within 93-91 on a jumper and a free throw, and Zelinger tied the first overtime with a jumper.

Stout (6-5) did take a three point lead in the second on a bucket by Bresette and a free throw by Stacie Anderson (Jr, Clayton). Millkin came right back at the line, making three of four free throws to tie the score, then take the lead for good when Jennifer Falbe hit a 3-pointer.

Forced to send Millikin to the line, Millikin's Missy Barrett connected on all six of her opportunities to build a seven-point, 105-98, lead.

Zelinger cut the lead to four with a three pointer. Following a Millikin free throw, Bresette nailed a 3-pointer with 14 seconds to pull to 106-104. Millikin got their final point at the line.

Millkin, which is ranked 16th in the latest D3hoops.com national poll, was 37-of-48 from the line, while Stout hit 19-of-39 throws.

Bresette, who was named to the all-tournament team, and Zelinger led all scorers with 25 points. Jessie Herrman (Fr, Barron) finished with 12 points.

Millikin was led by all-tournament team selection Sara Brown with 23 points. Falbe added 21 points and had seven steals. Lauren Brown and KC Hammond scored 17 points. Hammond was named to the all-tournament team.

In the consolation game, St. Scholastica (5-6) overcame a lackluster first half performance to put away Central College, 61-50. The Saints trailed 24-15 at intermission, but exploded in the second half for 46 points. Named to the all-tournament team was the Saints' Kim Juusola, who led all scorers with 18 points. Teammate Jen Quale added 16 points. Central's Allison Cooper was also named to the all-tournament team.

BLUE DEVILS MAKE QUICK WORK OF CENTRAL IN OWN TOURNEY

MENOMONIE - UW-Stout did an aboutface from their previous two outings and breezed to a 102-69 decision over Central College, Wednesday, Dec. 29 in Stout's own Snowflake Jamboree tournament at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Stout (6-4) catapulted to a 66-38 halftime lead over the Dutch, shooting 50 percent from the floor in the first half, and cooled down slightly in the second half to finish at 45 percent. In their last two outings - both losses - the Blue Devils barely shot 35 percent from the floor.

Stout will play Millikin University Dec. 30 in the championship game. Millikin defeated a scrappy St. Scholastica team, 76-67.

Behind the the outside scoring of Stacie Anderson (Jr, Clayton), and solid underneath play from Heather Peterson (Sr, Altoona) and Andrea Bresette (Sr, Ashland), Stout jumped out to a 17-point, 38-21 lead with nine minutes left in the quarter and never looked back.

Anderson and Peterson led the way with 15 points, with Anderson connecting on 13 in the first half and Peterson 12 in the first stanza. Bresette finished with 14 points, 12 in the first half.

Jessie Herrman (Fr, Barron) picked up nine points in the first half and finished with 14 points.

Amy Zelinger (So, Racine) keyed a Blue Devil defense that forced 34 Central turnovers. Zelinger had five steals and and two blocked shots.

Central's (1-4) Allison Cooper led all scorers with 19 points. Molly Parrott added 13 and Steph Meggers pitched in 12.

In the opening game, Millikin (7-1), which is ranked 16th in the latest d3hoops.com national poll, had to hold off a pesky St. Scholastica team. After Millikin jumped out to a 46-32 halftime lead, St. Scholastica (4-6) cut the deficit to five points several times, the last when the Saints' Jen Quale hit a layup with 3:38 remaining in the game.

Sara Brown scored six points over the next two minutes to stretch the Big Blue's lead to 10 points. Lauren Brown made a pair of charity shots and KC Hammond added a 3-pointer to preserve the win.

Millikin's Missy Barrett led all scorers with 18 points and Hammond pumped in 17. Lauren Brown added 14 and Sara Brown 12.

Kim Juusola, who played all 40 minutes for the Saints, scored 14 points, as did Tara Croteau. Quale scored 13.
