BLUE DEVILS TO HOST SNOWFLAKE JAMBOREE

MENOMONIE - In conjunction with the Wisconsin AAU Girls Basketball program, UW-Stout will host their first holiday tournament, Dec. 29-30 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Named the Snowflake Jamboree, UW-Stout will play Central College at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 29. That game will be preceeded by Millikin University and St. Scholastica at 5 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 30 at 5 p.m., with the consolation game to preceed at 3 p.m

UW-Stout: The Blue Devils (5-4) are struggling to overcome what has led to a three game losing streak after running off to a 5-1 start, with their only early season loss coming to nationally rated Capital University at the Capital Tournament in November. Since, then the Blue Devils have fallen to highly rated UW-Eau Claire, NAIA ranked Northwestern and Northland College. Heather Peterson (Sr, Altoona) has been leading the Blue Devils in scoring, rebounding and steals just about all season. Named the WIAC player of the week after a 21 point outburst against Concordia-St. Paul over Thanksgiving, Peterson is averaging 13 points per game, is pulling down 6.1 rebounds and has nabbed 4.2 steals. Point guard Stacie Anderson (Jr, Clayton) is averaging 9.8 points, while post player Andrea Bresette (Sr, Ashland) is averaging 9.7 points and 5.1 rebounds. As a team, the Blue Devils are averaging 71.6 points and giving up 68.7. Coach Mark Thomas is in his 13th season and is two wins shy of 200 career victories.

Central: Located in Pella, Iowa, the Dutch have fallen on hard times this early in the season, posting a 1-3 overall record, but they are 1-1 in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC). The Dutch are led by Molly Parrott (So, Council Bluff), who is averaging 18.5 points per game. Allison Cooper (Sr, Ventura, Iowa) is chipping in 16.8 points and lead the team in 3-pointers, making 11-of-22. Steph Meggers (Jr, Manilla, Iowa) is the teams' leader off the glass, pulling down nine caroms per game. As a team, the Dutch are averaging 62.5 points, but giving up 71.5. Last time out, Parrott scored a game high 22 points, but Central dropped a 77-64 IIAC decision to Coe College. Gary Boeyink is the only coach the Dutch have had, dating back to 1973. During his tenure, Central has one national title (1992-93), qualified to the NCAA playoffs five times and won the IIAC six times.

Millikin University: The Big Blue (6-1) hail from Decatur, Ill., and bring a strong basketball tradition with them, having won the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) title six times and qualified to the NCAA Division III playoffs six times under coach Lori Kerans. In 1997, Millikin and Stout met in the second round of the NCAA playoffs, with Millikin taking an 81-77 decision. Millikin's only loss so far this season has been a 79-57 decision to defending national champion Washington University in November. Their last time out, they simply rolled over Benedictine, 104-63, with Missy Barrett (Jr, Hume, Ill) scoring 26 points - including 5-for-7 from 3-point range, and Sara Brown (Jr, Corcoran, Calif) chipped in 24 points, pulled down 14 rebounds and recorded eight steals. K.C. Hammond (Sr, Decatur, Ill) added 19 points and 10 rebounds. Barrett is averaging 16.6 points, while Brown is averaging 14.4 points and 5.3 rebounds. Lauren Brown (Sr, Springfield, Ill) averages 13.9 points and Hammond, 12.4 points and 5.1 rebounds. As a team, Millikin outscores their opponents, 89.3-59.0.

St. Scholastica: The Saints of the College of St. Scholastica (4-5) come into the tournament riding a 57-53 in over NAIA ranked Mayville State. Jennifer Quale (Sr, McGregor, Minn) poured in a season-high 26 points to lead all scorers. Tara Croteau (Sr, Biwabik, Minn) added 17 points, while Sherri Bierschbach (Sr, Belgrade, Minn) pulled down 10 rebounds. Quale is averaging 12.8 points per game, and Kim Juusola (Sr, Barnum, Minn), who led the Saints in scoring in five games, is averaging 10.3 points. Quale has been pulling down 5.1 rebounds, and Noelle Beedle (So, Houlton) is averaging 4.3 caroms. As a team, St. Scholastica, located in Duluth, Minn., is averaging 54.7 points, but is giving up 72.8.
