December 17, 1998DAVE LARSON COMES OFF BENCH TO KEY STOUT WIN OVER MARIAN MENOMONIE - Dave Larson (Fr, LaCrescent, Minn) hit a 12-foot jumper with 58 seconds left to play to give UW-Stout a 58-55 lead and the Blue Devils hit six consecutive free throws to seal a 64-55 win over Marian College, Thursday, Dec. 17 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Larson scored nine of his game-high 14 points in the final six minutes of the game, to lift Stout (8-3) from a seven point deficit. On the night, Larson was perfect, connecting on 5-of-5 field goals and 4-of-4 free throws. While Larson was going on his tear, it was the Stout defense that stiffened, limiting the Sabres (5-4) to no points in the final three minutes of play. Stout trailed 27-24 at halftime and got their first lead of the game at the 12:55 mark of the second half when Jeremy Leibfried (Jr, Dickeyville) hit a jumper to pull Stout ahead, 37-36. But Marian surged ahead to a 51-44 lead before Larson was put back in. Larson promptly scored a three-point play. Stout took a 54-53 lead on a Larson lay-up at 3:52, then took the lead for good, 56-55, when Larson made two free throws at 2:46. The Blue Devils had five players in double figures, with Ben Kuepers (Jr, Dickeyville) and Jeremy Preston (Sr, Madison) each scoring 12 points. Andy Myers (Jr, Eau Claire) finished with 11 points and Leibfried had 10. Stout benefitted at the line, making 18-of-21 charity shots, good for 86 percent. Kuepers and Preston were a perfect 4-of-4 from the line. Jason Collien led the Sabres with 13 points, while Jason Hovland and Mark McHorney each had 10 points. The Blue Devils will be off until Jan. 6 when they travel to UW-River Falls. December 15, 1998BLUE DEVILS DOWN VITERBO COLLEGE, 75-62 MENOMONIE - Jeremy Preston (Sr, Madison) scored 23 points to lead UW-Stout to a 75-62 win over Viterbo College, Tuesday, Dec. 15, in a non-conference contest at Johnson Fieldhouse. Preston scored 11 points in the first half and added 12 in the second half. Stout (7-3) led 31-21 at halftime, despite hitting only 48 percent (7-of-15) of their free throws in the first half. The Blue Devils reversed their fortunes at the line in the second half, hitting 83 percent (19-of-23) of their charity shots to finish the night with 26-of-38 shooting. The V-Hawks (6-5) made a run at the Blue Devils in the second and closed the gap to five points twice, 44-39, at the 11:41 mark and again, 51-46, at the 7:56 mark. Stout finally pulled away at 4:40 after Ben Kuepers (Jr, Dickeyville) hit two field goals and a free throw to stretch the lead to 62-50 and Viterbo could only pull to within nine points. Before fouling out, Kuepers tallied 13 points, pulled down six rebounds and blocked three shots. Jeremy Leibfried (Jr, Dickeyville) added 15 points. The V-Hawks were led by Luke Maher with 21 points and Sean Madigan chipped in 11 points.
December 17, 1998BLUE DEVILS HAVE LEAD, LOSE LEAD, WIND UP WINNING MENOMONIE - Nothing like making the game interesting. With as much as a 15 point lead midway through the second half, the UW-Stout women's basketball team let Northwestern, Minn, College back into the game, but Stout used the free throw line to pull off a 100-94 non-conference win Thursday, Dec. 17 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Leading 66-51 at the 13:50 mark of the second half, the Blue Devils (3-6) saw their lead fade as the Eagles' (6-9) took the lead, 87-84, at the 2:06 mark as Renee DeMars scored six consecutive points. The Eagles went to a 91-88 lead when Stout's Shannon Berg (Sr, Ellsworth) knotted the game, 91-91, with a 3-pointer with 58 seconds remaining, the last field goal the Blue Devils would make. Rachel Traynor (Sr, Ellsworth) hit the front end of a free throw, but Andrea Bresette (Jr, Ashland) pulled down the rebound for Stout, then was fouled. The Blue Devils would go on to nail eight consecutive free throws to record the win. Berg led all scorers with a career-high 26 points, nailing 8-of-11 3-pointers and pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds. Traynor finished with 17 points, Amy Zelinger (Fr, Racine) had 12, Stacie Anderson (So, Clayton) 11 and Heather Peterson (Jr, Altoona) 10. The Eagles got 18 points from Shereen Kramer and DeMars and 16 points from Amber Munger. As cold as the Blue Devils were last Saturday against UW-Eau Claire from the floor, they were heating up the gym, hitting 34-of-65 shots for 52 percent. The game marked the second consecutive game Stout hit the century mark. The Blue Devils defeated Concordia-St. Paul, 100-78, Monday. Stout will be off until Dec. 30 when they travel to Winona State and will head to Northland College, Jan. 2. December 14, 1998UW-STOUT WOMEN FITTED WITH WIN OVER CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL MENOMONIE - UW-Stout women's basketball coach Mark Thomas now owes each member of his team a new t-shirt after his Blue Devils disposed of Concordia-St. Paul, 100-78, Monday, Dec. 14 at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Blue Devils (2-6) have been struggling this season both offensively and defensively, so in practice Monday, Thomas set up a series of incentives for the team. One incentive included a new set of t-shirts if Stout hit the century mark. And when Corina Bohl (Fr, Chippewa Falls) hit a lay-up and the free throw with 57 seconds remaining, the wardrobe was being fitted. Rachel Traynor (Sr, Ellsworth) led the way for Stout with 19 points, 12 in the first half where Stout struggled to take a lead and hold it. The Comets led for most of the first eight minutes, but Stout managed to knot the score six times before taking the lead for good at 10:39 when Shannon Berg (Sr, Ellsworth) hit a 3-pointer. Stout held off the Comets (5-4) for the rest of the game, but didn't really put Concordia away until Berg hit a 3-pointer at 11:17 of the second half and Traynor followed up with her only seven points in the second half within a one minute, 10 second span. Berg finished with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Stacie Anderson (So, Clayton) added 15 points, Heather Peterson (Jr, Altoona) had 11 and Andrea Bresette (Jr, Ashland), 10. The 100 points matched a season high for most points scored in a game. The Comets' Brenda Giesselmann led all scorers with 24 points, but got only five points in the second half. Lynn Peterson finished with 19 points and Ann Gust, 13.
December 14, 1998UW-STOUT'S GRAHAM LOMEN NAMED NCHA PLAYER OF THE WEEK MENOMONIE - UW-Stout forward Graham Lomen helped his team to its first points of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) season last weekend and has been named the NCHA Player of the Week. In two games against UW-Eau Claire the 6-0, 240-pound senior from Apple Valley, Minn., had three goals and one assist. He had one power-play goal and had the eventual game-winner in the Blue Devils' 8-3 home win over the Blugolds Saturday, Dec. 12. Lomen scored the first goal of the game in a 2-2 tie with the Blugolds Friday, Dec. 11 at Eau Claire. Lomen is the teams' scoring leader, with 11 goals and eight assists. The Blue Devils are 4-10-1 heading into the Christmas break and have posted a 2-0-1 record over the last three games. Stout returns to action Jan. 8-9 when they travel to Bemidji State for an NCHA weekend series.
