Stand-out Students Awarded

More than 400 students crossed the stage at the University of Wisconsin-Stout in September. They were not handed degrees—not yet. The students were handed more than half a million dollars in scholarships, essential funds which help make their future degrees possible.

A total of 456 students received financial awards and scholarship pins from the Stout University Foundation. A total of 538 scholarships were awarded, amounting to $526,447. Several of the scholarships were for international, study abroad or exchange students.

The annual scholarship reception was held in the Memorial Student Center’s Great Hall the evening of Sept. 13. Many of the scholarship donors also were in attendance to personally present the awards to the recipients.

Keynote speaker Prescott Phillips ’03 told the scholars and donors of the opportunities he received and the successes he enjoyed from being a recipient of one of the scholarships awarded that night. Between 1999 and 2003, Phillips received the Charles and Carolyn Blain Mowbray Endowed Scholarship, one of the most prestigious scholarships awarded by the foundation. Phillips graduated with a business degree in 2003 and has worked his way up the corporate ladder at Target, the second largest retailer in the country.

Bob Heuermann, assistant chancellor for university advancement and the evening’s master of ceremonies, encouraged the students to wear their scholarship pins throughout their university and their alumni years, to help share UW-Stout’s story of helping students succeed.

Established in 1963, the Stout University Foundation Scholarship Program has helped more than 5,700 students pay for a college education. Through the financial support of alumni, parents, faculty and staff, and friends of the university, the program has awarded $2.5 million over the years.
