In May, the university’s Symphonic Singers and Alumni Choir left for a 12-day concert tour to Italy and Austria. The 32 singers lifted their voices to fill the nave of St. Peter’s Basilica, completed in 1626, in Vatican City, and the dome in St. Mark’s Basilica, completed in 1671, in Venice. The choirs also visited Austria and performed at Salzburg Cathedral, where Mozart was baptized; Melk Abbey, a Benedictine monastery built in 1089 overlooking Melk, and gothic St. Stephen’s Cathedral, built in 1160, in Vienna.

Patrick Liebergen, director of the choirs, performed his arrangement of Ave Maria with keyboard accompaniment at St. Peter’s. This arrangement also was performed by the choirs at Carnegie Hall in 2006.

Mark your calendars! We are in the planning stages of a second international alumni choir for 2011. If you are interested in participating, please contact Sue Pittman, alumni director, at pittmans@uwstout.edu.
