STEPS has been awesome so far.  We visited the glass company, the plastic company, the foundry.  We had math, physics, and chemistry,  we learned about packaging, and much much more.  These pictures below only begin to describe what we've learned in the past few days.

In math we experimented with a ruler, washers, fishing line, and tape.  Our  goal was to have a balance between two different numbers of washers.   Almost all of us succeeded!  We also tried to find the center of gravity on a cut out paper airplane.

Building our airplanes was awesome!   It took about two hours to build, put together, and decorate our planes.  It was so cool to watch something that  had been just some "corrugated" paper, tape, glue, plastic, and metal turn into a real airplane.  We will be able to fly them on 7-27-05.

Foundry was really exciting!   Molten aluminum was poured over the foam molds that we made in advance for the  nose of our airplanes.  This was the first step in making our airplanes.   We all stepped back when the foam burned under the hot molten metal.

Chemistry was a great start to a sleepy morning on Wednesday, at the beginning of or course, they promised we'd be woken up before we left and boy were we!  A series of hefty explosions and floating fire was the perfect alarm clock for 10 sleepy twelve- year-old girls.
