How do I apply for the Practicum?

After completing the prerequisite courses, e-mail Program Advisor, Dennis O'Connor (oconnord@uwstout.edu) for permission to register. Include your resume and current e-portfolio address in your email.

Is the Practicum offered every semester?

Yes, the Practicum is offered three times each year: Spring, Summer, Fall.

How will the Practicum work if I live out of state or overseas?

All practicum activities, including the internship, are conducted completely online. You can work on all classes and your practicum from anywhere.

What is the Internship?

The internship provides mentored practice teaching in live online class or training program. Internship placements are individualized as much as possible. Every attempt is made to make the internship applicable to the career goals of each participant.

  • Participants may be placed into any of the four e-learning courses they have completed during their training.
  • Participants may be placed in some of the online professional development classes listed in our online professional development catalog.
  • Participants who already teach online may work with the program advisor to craft a customized internship focused on the class they currently teaching.

What duties will I have as an Practicum intern?

Interns work under a written learning performance contract mutually agreed upon by the cooperating instructor and intern. The training demonstrates best practices in e-learning and provides hands on-experience as an instructor in an online course.

The learning performance contract provides a detailed description of responsibilities including:

  • Online voice and social presence
  • Professional communication
  • Pre-course and ongoing administrative tasks
  • Discussion facilitation
  • Student tracking, assessment of learning outcomes, and feedback
  • Familiarization with the instructor side learning management system (LMS)

Upon acceptance in the Practicum and placement with a cooperating teacher, each intern receives a copy of the learning performance contract. Details of the contract are discussed and explained. The intern works with the cooperating teacher and the program advisor to clarify all expected responsibilities during the internship experience.

I already teach an online. May I use a class I teach for the Practicum?

Perhaps, if you teach an online course that coincides with the Practicum course dates, the program advisor will work with you to customize your internship.

The eportfolio

The eportfolio includes compilation of an artifact from each of the courses in the E-Learning and Online Teaching Graduate Certificate Program. The artifacts demonstrate both technical expertise and theoretical knowledge in e-learning and online teaching. During the Practicum, in addition to actively teaching in an online class, participants finalize their E-Portfolios with an emphasis on career development.

Career Advice and Assistance

The e-portfolio is an essential element in the search for online employment. Finding work in the e-learning field requires a combination of subject matter expertise, 21st century networking and e-learning and teaching expertise.
