SOCCER The Blue Devils hit the road for the final week of the regular season as they travel to Edgewood College Friday, Oct. 22 for a 5:30 p.m. start, then head over to UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Oct. 23. VOLLEYBALL The Blue Devils will close out their conference schedule this week with a trip to UW-Superior, Wednesday, Oct. 20, then will participate in the UW-Whitewater tournament Oct. 22-23. Stout holds a 20-16 lead in the series with Superior downed the Yellowjackets, 3-0, earlier this season. At Whitewater, Stout will face Elmhurst College and Whitewater Friday, and Illinois Wesleyan and Marian Saturday. DEFENSIVE LOOK: Platteville: Modified 50; Stout: 3-4 COACHES: Stout coach Ed Meierkort (26-40 career) is in his seventh year. Pioneer coach Mike Emendorfer (3-3) is in his first year. STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "Before the game (with La Crosse) I said short fields win the game. That's what happened. I thought our first half defense played valiently to keep the ball out of the end zone. We are not converting offensively when we have to. We are playing hard, just not converting. "Platteville is putting the same personnel on the field, but they are just more excited to be there. They are doing a nice job. The quarterback (Joel Beard) delivers the ball well. He has a good arm, is very active and is a good athlete. We will have to keep (wide receiver Troy) Gagner out of the game. Pressure will be the key. We look at this as a chance to move up in the standings. This is the part of the schedule where we have got to make some hay. We respect what Platteville is doing. We think we can win this game and they (Platteville) will have to prove otherwise. Our key for this game is to get our offense rolling." RADIO: WMEQ 880 AM, Jake Bostrom, Dan Stevens, Dick Lowery October 16, 1999TURNOVERS PLAY BIG PART IN BLUE DEVILS LOSS TO EAGLESLA CROSSE - Three interceptions and two fumbles proved to be very costly as UW-Stout dropped a 42-14 decision at UW-La Crosse Saturday, Oct. 16. But it was not only the turnovers that would cost Stout, but also the Eagles' ground game which accounted for 252 yards and four touchdowns. The Eagles (3-3, 3-1) got on the board early, after stopping the Blue Devils on three plays, as Tad Pieczynski scored with less than two minutes off the clock. Pieczynski got all of the yardage in the two-play drive, going 28 yards on his first rush, then scoring on a 14-yard scamper. The Blue Devils (2-4, 1-3) would answer back, but it would take until the end of the quarter when Marty Goryl (Sr, Greenfield) hooked up with Josh Antoni (Fr, Onalaska) on a 57-yard pass play to knot the score at 7-7 with 58 seconds remaining in the quarter. La Crosse would become opportunistic late in the second quarter. After picking off Goryl for the second time in the day, the Eagles needed only three plays to score with Pieczynski getting the call from three yards out. The Blue Devils coughed up a fumble on their own 33 with 29 seconds left in the half, and La Crosse immediately scored when Nick Wagner caught a 33-yard touchdown pass from fellow receiver Ben Antony, who took the ball on a reverse. Things would get no better for Stout in the second half. The Eagles' Joe Rivard scored twice in the third quarter as La Crosse jumped out to a 35-7 lead. Stout did put together an 84-yard scoring drive in the fourth quarter, capped off by a 9-yard pass from Goryl to Ryan Patt (Sr, North Fond du Lac). The Blue Devils did stop La Crosse on the ensuing drive, but Goryl was picked off on first down by BJ McQuillan who returned the ball 37 yards for the final score of the game. Stout totaled 297 yards of offense, 166 in the air, 131 on the ground. Goryl accounted for 133 yards passing, with Antoni getting a good chunk with his lone catch of the day. Ross Moline (So, Genoa) rushed for 55 yards. La Crosse tallied 382 total yards, 252 on the ground, 130 in the air. Pieczynski finished with 119 rushing yards, and Rivard had 106. Stout returns home to face UW-Platteville Saturday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m. for the annual Hall of Fame game. October 12, 1999KEVIN McCULLEY NAMED WIAC PLAYER OF THE WEEKMENOMONIE - Kevin McCulley (Jr, Fond du Lac) kicked three field goals including the game winner with 15 seconds left to lift UW-Stout to a 22-20 win over arch-rival UW-Eau Claire Saturday, Oct. 9 at Eau Claire. McCulley's game-winner came from 33 yards out. McCulley kicked two field goals - 44-yards and 36-yards - in the second quarter to give Stout a 13-7 halftime lead. McCulley added a PAT in the first quarter. For his efforts, McCulley was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) special teams player of the week. As a punter, McCulley averaged 39.2 yards/kick on six punts. McCulley's punts and kickoffs kept Eau Claire deep all day. Three times, McCulley's punts gave Eau Claire field position no better than their own 30. On kickoffs, McCulley's kicks gave Eau Claire field position no better than their own 30 four times.McCulley, who has been named the Stout special teams player of the week for the past three weeks, is averaging 38.8 yards per punt, and is leading the WIAC in conference games with a 38.3 yd/punt average. He has placed six punts on the season inside the 20 yard line and has had two touchbacks. McCulley has made 5-of-7 field goals this season, and is 13-of-14 for points after touchdowns (PAT). He leads the team in scoring with 28 points.
October 16, 1999AFTER SPOTTING LA CROSSE, BLUE DEVILS PLAY EVENLA CROSSE - After allowing three goals in the first half, the UW-Stout soccer team played UW-La Crosse even the rest of the way, but still dropped a 3-0 conference decision to the Eagles Saturday, Oct. 16 in La Crosse. The Eagles (9-4, 5-1) scored three goals in the first 24 minutes of play. The Blue Devils (5-10, 3-3) had several opportunities, but came up dry each time. La Crosse outshot Stout, 19-9. Stout goalkeeper Jessie Sutherland (So, Duluth, Minn) settled down after the first few minutes, and went on to stop eight shots. Stout will close out their regular season this weekend when they travel south, making a stop in Madison Friday, Oct. 22, to face Edgewood College, then wrap up the conference schedule with a trip to UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Oct. 23. October 13, 1999BLUE DEVIL SOCCER TEAM HAS EASY DAY WITH KNIGHTS, WIN 6-0MENOMONIE - It was senior day for UW-Stout and the Blue Devils' lone senior, Jessica Unterweger (Sr, Nashotah), wasted little time in making her final home game a memorable one as she racked up two assists and a goal on Stout's way to a 6-0 non-conference win over Martin Luther College, Wednesday, Oct. 13 at the River Heights field. Only three minutes into the game, Unterweger, the Blue Devils' all-time assists leader, took a pass from Becky Howard (So, Wauwatosa), and headed a pass to Nellie Sivertsen (Fr, River Falls) inside the penalty. Sivertsen pushed the ball past the Knights' goalkeeper, and the rout was on.After several early Martin Luther attacks were squelched, Howard provided an unassisted goal in the 23rd minute. Unterweger, Sivertsen and Co., went to work again 18 minutes into the second half. The Knights had perhaps their best scoring opportunity of the afternoon, but Blue Devil goalkeeper Jessie Sutherland (So, Duluth, Minn) made the stop and punted the ball to Unterweger. Unterweger cleared the ball the distance of the field, then passed to Sivertsen who recorded her 13th goal of the season, only one goal short of the Blue Devil single season record. Seven minutes later, it was Sivertsen who would provide the assist, taking a pass from Theresa Hamilton (Fr, Woodbury, Minn), then finding Stacy Normington (Fr, Delavan) who blasted the shot home. Unterweger got some help from Howard just three minutes later to run the score to 5-0. Lisa Cocchiarella (Fr, Woodbury, Minn) closed out the scoring with her first career goal, taking a crossing pass from Shannon Camp (Jr, Blaine, Minn) with five minutes to play. "Jess really showed the value of senior leadership today," Stout coach Dave Morris said. "She led by example, created scoring chances, wone balls in the air and played solid defense. That is the type of all-around effort we must have to be successful at our level." The Blue Devils (5-9) outshot Martin Luther (7-4-1), 30-8. Sutherland finished with seven saves while the Blue Devils put 17 shots on goal.
October 16, 1999BLUE DEVILS COME ALIVE AT THE SERVICE LINE, DOWN POINTERSMENOMONIE - Less than 24 hours after being done in by UW-Whitewater at the service line, the UW-Stout volleyball team rediscovered the serve and used it to take a 15-10, 15-8, 15-8 conference win over UW-Stevens Point Saturday, Oct. 16 at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Blue Devils (12-8, 3-4) racked up 12 service aces, with Rachel Eidet (So, North Mankato, Minn) and Holly LaVallie (So, Owatonna, Minn) leading the way with four each. Tori Feit (Sr, Rushmore, Minn) added three aces. While Stout was chipping away at the service line, Brooke Palmer (So, Mantorville, Minn) was pounding away at the Pointer (10-15, 1-5) defense, racking up 13 kills. Eidet added 10 kills. Feit had two solo blocks, and two assisted blocks. The Blue Devils will be at UW-Superior Wednesday, Oct. 20, and then head the other direction to participate in the UW-Whitewater Invitational Oct. 22-23. October 15, 1999BLUE DEVILS WIN FIRST GAME, BUT WHITEWATER TAKES MATCHMENOMONIE - UW-Stout shot out and took the first game over nationally ranked UW-Whitewater, but it was all down hill from there for the Blue Devils as the Warhawks bounced back to take a 12-15, 15-3, 15-7, 15-5 decision Friday, Oct. 15 at Menomonie. The Warhawks found a soft spot in the Blue Devil defense and served up 13 service aces, most of those coming in the final three games. Tori Feit (Sr, Rushmore, Minn), playing on senior night, finished the night with 13 kills to lead the Blue Devils (11-8, 2-4), while Heather Cassell (Fr, Lake Geneva) had 11.
