MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD When: Turner is scheduled to compete Thursday, May 20 at 12:30 p.m. Buchholtz is scheduled to compete Thursday at 1 p.m. Jacobson is scheduled for the 1500-trials Thursday at 5:20 p.m. Finals are scheduled for Saturday, May 22 at 1 p.m. The relay team has trials at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and finals Saturday at 4:15 p.m. Bethke is slated to compete at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 21 and Hamill at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
May 17, 1999ERIC LUND, JOSH JOHNSON NAMED TO WIAC FIRST TEAMMADISON - UW-Stout's Eric Lund (Fr, Ashland) and Josh Johnson (So, Oregon) were named to the 1999 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) baseball first team. Tate Cummins (Sr, Austin, Minn), JR Dachel (Jr, Bloomer), JW Dachel (Fr, Bloomer) and Ryan Hanson (Sr, Austin, Minn) were named to the honorable mention squad. Lund joined the squad just before the conference season began, playing in all 14 conference games and 23 of the Blue Devils' 37 games. Lund batted .308 in WIAC contests and smashed out 13 RBI, tying him for third in the league. Lund had 16 hits in 52 at-bats with three doubles, two triples and two home runs for a slugging percentage of .558. On the season, Lund hit .277 with a team-high 18 RBI. Upon joining the team, Lund moved into left field, allowing the Blue Devils to revamp their line-up, which was decimated with injuries. Johnson, the Blue Devils' third baseman, batted 15-for-45 for a batting average of .333. Johnson finished with three doubles and five RBI in league play. On the season, Johnson hit .269 and drove in 11 runs.Cummins leaves the Blue Devils with the school career record for stolen bases in hand. For his career, Cummins stole 44 bases. This season he had 17 stolen bases in 19 attempts and his six conference stolen bases tied him for second. JR Dachel was named as the team MVP, hitting a team-high .333 in all games. The first baseman hit .271 in league games and committed no errors in 138 chances. JW Dachel moved from the designated hitter position to right field, and hit .303 in 10 games. Hanson hit .269 in 14 league games and was perfect in the outfield in 29 chances and started one double play. Stout finished the season at 14-23 overall, 6-8 in the WIAC, good for fourth place and spot in the WIAC playoffs. May 17, 1999JR DACHEL NAMED STOUT MOST VALUABLE PLAYERMENOMONIE - UW-Stout first baseman JR Dachel (Jr, Bloomer) was named the Blue Devils' most valuable player for the 1999 season. Dachel, a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honorable mention pick, led the team in batting average, hitting .333 with 42 hits on 126 at-bats and 15 RBI. Dachel also led the team in home runs with five and was the leader in slugging percentage, hitting .532 with six doubles, two triples, five home runs for 67 total bases. Dachel drew a team-high 16 walks, and had a team-high .422 on-base percentage. Dachel made it count when he was base, stealing seven bases in nine attempts and scoring a team-high 25 runs. Converted to first base this season after playing both shortstop and second base the last two seasons, Dachel had a fielding percentage of .994, committing only two errors in 337 chances. Dachel's younger brother, JW Dachel (Fr, Bloomer) was named the team's rookie of the year, hitting .310 as the designated hitter and right fielder. Dachel was a WIAC honorable mention pick. Josh Johnson (So, Oregon) was named as the team's most improved player. A first-team all-conference pick, Johnson hit .269, going 25-for-93 with 11 RBI.

Adam Shoberg, Fr, Minnetonka, Minn., 2.60 (17.1 IP, 5 ER), Scott Meyer, Jr, Austin, Minn., 2.61 (69 IP, 20 ER) May 15, 1999TOP-RANKED TITANS END BLUE DEVILS' SEASONOSHKOSH - The NCAA Division III's top ranked team, UW-Oshkosh, ended UW-Stout's 1999 campaign with a 10-1 decision in the opening game of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) playoffs Saturday, May 15 at Oshkosh. But it was the Blue Devils that hurt themselves, committing six errors which led to seven Oshkosh unearned runs. Stout shot themselves in the foot in the second inning where they committed four errors which led to six runs, five unearned. The Blue Devils would never recover, although they pounded out eight hits, they stranded 10 runners, once with the bases loaded. Eric Lund (Fr, Ashland) finished the season hot, going 3-for-4 with the Blue Devils' only RBI in the sixth inning when his single drove in Tate Cummins (Sr, Austin, Minn). Cummins finished the day hitting 2-for-5, while Andy Guden (Jr, Medford) didn't look like he was in a season-long slump, going 2-for-4. Scott Meyer (Jr, Austin, Minn) picked up the hard-luck loss, fanning three. Zak Arneson (So, Barneveld) pitched two-and-two-thirds of scoreless relief. The Blue Devils finish the season at 14-23 overall. UW-Steven Point defeated UW-La Crosse, 1-0 in 13 innings in the second semi-final, and the Pointers downed Oshkosh, 5-3, in the championship game. The Pointers and the Titans were declared WIAC co-champions.
May 17, 1999FENHOUSE, PETRIE NAMED CO-MVP OF STOUT SOFTBALL TEAM MENOMONIE - Tanya Petrie (Sr, Menomonie) and Cara Fenhouse (Jr, Superior) provided much of UW-Stout's fastpitch softball offense throughout the season and were named as the Blue Devils' co-most valuable players, coach Chris Stainer announced.Both Fenhouse and Petrie were named first team all-conference earlier in the month. Fenhouse, last season's West Division Player of the Year, hit a team-high .448, going 30-for-67, with four doubles, one triple, two home runs and 17 RBIs, third on the team. Fenhouse also stole five bases. Fenhouse, who converted from second base to catcher, led the team in slugging percentage with 42 total bases and a .627 slugging percentage. Fenhouse missed 10 games due to injuries throughout the season. Fenhouse received the teams' Golden Glove award with a fielding percentage of .912. She also received the teams' Slugger Award, cracking out a slugging percentage of .627. Petrie, who was twice a first team all-conference pick and once an honorable mention choice, had her best season at the plate since her freshman year.Petrie had a team-high 25 RBI and ran her career total to a school career record 106. Petrie also is the school career leader in doubles, hitting 10 this season to finish her career with 36 doubles. Petrie finished the season with a batting average of .351, going 34-for-97 and had two triples and a home run. In the field, mostly at first base, but also at third base, Petrie had a fielding percentage of .939, which was third on the team of all regular starters. Petrie also received the Team Leader award. Jill Tetu (Fr, Maplewood, Minn) received the Blue Devils' Most Dedicated Award and was named the Rookie of the Year. Tetu was one of only two players who started all 35 games, starting at second base in every game. While batting .213, Tetu drove in 12 runs from the bottom half of the line-up. Tetu had a fielding percentage of .952. Janel Krenz (So, McFarland) received the teams' Most Improved Player award, rising quickly to the top of the batting order to post an average of .355. Last year, Krenz batted .049. 1999 UW-Stout Softball Team Awards May 12, 1999JANEL KRENZ NAMED SECOND TEAM ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICTMENOMONIE - UW-Stout's Janel Krenz (So, McFarland) was named to the second team of the 1999 GTE/CoSIDA College Division Women's Softball Academic All-District V team. Krenz, an applied math major sporting a 3.848 grade point average, finished the season second on the team in batting average, hitting .355, making a marked improvement over her .049 batting average of a year ago. Krenz, the left fielder, moved from the bottom of the batting order to the lead off spot early in the season and did much of her hitting from the left side, reaching many times on a bunt. She finished the season with 39 hits on 110 at-bats, the most at-bats on the team. She finished with three doubles and 15 RBI. Krenz stole five bases in six attempts. Krenz had a fielding percentage of .946, committing only three errors in 56 chances. Krenz is a member of the Academic Honor Society, has received the Chancellor's Award for Academic Excellence all three of her semesters, received the Chancellor's Academic Honors Scholarship, is a volunteer tutor and has volunteered at the McFarland food pantry.
May 18, 1999BLUE DEVIL MEN'S TRACK SENDS SEVEN TO NATIONALSMENOMONIE - The UW-Stout men's track and field team will have seven athletes in four different events competing at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships this weekend at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. Jamie Buchholtz (So, Bloomer) in the pole vault, Tim Hamill (Sr, Brookfield) in the 3000-meter steeplechase and Mike Bethke (Jr, Mondovi) in the shot put have automatically qualified and the 4X400-meter relay team of Ryan Geier (So, McFarland), Troy Wyatt (Sr, Bryon, Minn), John Boldt (Sr, Hartland) and Billy Busch (Sr, Dickeyville) qualified provisionally and got the nod as the 10th seeded team. Buchholtz, seeded third at 16-feet, 1.25-inches, is scheduled to compete Thursday, May 20 at 1 p.m. The relay team is scheduled for trials Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and if they advance to the finals, will compete Saturday, May 22 at 4:15 p.m. The relay team comes in with a time of 3:15.01. Bethke, seeded 14th with a distance of 53-4.50, is scheduled to compete Friday, May 21 at 1:30 p.m. Hamill, seeded third in a time of 9:08.41, will compete Friday at 6:30 p.m.
May 15, 1999NO BLUE DEVILS QUALIFY TO NATIONALS AT FINAL LAST CHANCEMINNEAPOLIS, Minn - None of the four UW-Stout track and field peformers matched NCAA Division III qualifying times at the Minnesota Last Chance meet Saturday, May 15 at Bierman Track Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn. Jesse Hunter (So, La Farge) was seventh in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 56.58. Hunter had also qualified provisionally with a time of 54.19, but ranked 33rd. Jeff Miller (Fr, St. Louis Park, Minn) was eighth in the 400-hurdles (1:00.48) and 13th in the 110-hurdles (16.28). Bob Cahow (So, New Brighton, Minn) placed 10th in the pole vault (14-7.25) and Matt Lausted (Fr, Menomonie) was 11th in the pole vault (14-7.25). Qualifying automatically for the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships earlier this season are: Mike Bethke (Jr, Mondovi), shot put; Jamie Buchholtz (So, Bloomer), pole vault and Tim Hamill (Sr, Brookfield), steeplechase. The NCAA will announce the remainder of the field Monday, May 17. The national meet is May 20-22 at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.
May 13, 1999CLINT LATZ WINS STEEPLECHASE AT ST. THOMASST. PAUL, Minn. - Clint Latz (Fr, Lublin) was first in the 3000-meter steeplechase and teammate Chris Stevens (Jr, New Richmond) finished second in the same event at the University of St. Thomas NCAA Division III Qualifier, Thursday, May 13. Latz finished in a time of 9-minutes, 37.39-seconds, while Stevens finished in 9:48.00. Josh Webb (So, Chippewa Falls) was sixth (10:25.16). Corey O'Donnell (Sr, Chippewa Falls) came up short in his attempt to qualify to the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships, finished fifth in the discus (141-11) and third in the hammer (152-3). The 4X400-relay team clocked a time of 3:15.01, but were the only team entered in the event. Jesse Hunter (So, LaFarge) was third in the 200 (22.75) as was Tim Hamill (Sr, Brookfield) in the 1500 (3:58.42). May 11, 1999MIKE BETHKE QUALIFIES AUTOMATICALLY TO NATIONALSLA CROSSE - Rain and lightning caused a suspension of the Leo Schnurr Invitational at UW-La Crosse Tuesday, May 11, but not before UW-Stout's Mike Bethke (Jr, Mondovi) tossed a personal best as he automatically qualified to the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships in the shot put. Bethke, who had earlier in the season hit the provisional distance, uncorked a toss of 53-feet, 4.50-inches to place first in the event. The Blue Devils sent a limited squad to the event, with Aaron Scheffer (So, Humbird) placing sixth in in the 110-hurdles with a personal best time of 15.38. Jeff Miller (Fr, St. Louis Park, Minn) was seventh in a time of 15.84. Bob Cahow (So, New Brighton, Minn) was fourth in the pole vault (14-10.75) and Corey O'Donnell (Sr, Chippewa Falls) was sixth in the hammer (160-5) and seventh in the discus (145-2.50). The Blue Devils will be at the St. Thomas Invitational Thursday, May 13 and at the University of Minnesota Invitational Saturday, May 15.
May 18, 1999KATIE JACOBSON, JENNIFER TURNER ADVANCE TO NATIONAL MEETMENOMONIE - UW-Stout will have two entrants on the women's side of the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships this weekend at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. Katie Jacobson (Sr, Eau Claire) will get her final shot to earn an outdoor All-America award. After collecting two indoor All-America awards and two cross-country All-America awards, Jacobson will compete in the 1500-meter run trials Thursday, May 20 at 5:20 p.m. Finals for the event are scheduled for Saturday, May 22 at 1 p.m. Jacobson is seeded eighth in the event with a time of 4:38.33. Jacobson also qualified automatically in the 800, but elected to run just the 1500. Jennifer Turner (So, Eden Prairie, Minn) will be making her first trip to the nationals in the hammer throw, advancing with a provisional qualifying and school record distance of 147-feet, 4-inches. Turner, seeded 18th, is the first Stout women's performer to advance to the national meet in the hammer throw. Turner will compete Thursday, May 20 at 12:30 p.m.
May 15, 1999NO BLUE DEVILS QUALIFY TO NATIONALS AT FINAL LAST CHANCEMINNEAPOLIS, Minn - UW-Stout's Jennifer Turner (So, Eden Praire, Minn) placed sixth in the hammer throw with a toss of 143-feet, 11-inches at the Minnesota Last Chance meet Saturday, May 15 at Bierman Track Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn., but came up short in her bid to qualify automatically to the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships. Turner had qualified provisionally earlier with a school record mark of 147-4, but was ranked 21st nationally. Katie Jacobson (Sr, Eau Claire) was the only Blue Devil to qualify automatically to the national meet, meeting automatic times in the 800- and 1500-meter runs.
May 13, 1999KATIE JACOBSON IMPROVES QUALIFYING TIME IN 800ST. PAUL, Minn. - Katie Jacobson (Sr, Eau Claire) was edged in a photo finish in the 800-meter run at the University of St. Thomas NCAA Qualifier, Thursday, May 13, but ran an NCAA Division III automatic qualifying time. Jacobson ran a season-best 2-minutes, 14.14-seconds to place second to St. Thomas' Lizzy May, who clocked a 2:14.09. Jacobson, who is already qualified in the 1500-meter, will compete at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships, May 20-22, at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. Jennifer Turner (So, Eden Prairie, Minn) placed sixth in the hammer throw (138-6). May 11, 1999TURNER SECOND, SCHWABENLENDER FOURTH AT LA CROSSELA CROSSE - UW-Stout's Jennifer Turner (So, Eden Prairie, Minn) finished second in the hammer throw and Andrea Schwabenlender (Fr, Bristol) was fourth in the high jump at the UW-La Crosse Outdoor Last Chance meet Tuesday, May 11. Turner tossed the hammer 135-feet, one-half-inch, while Schwabenlender jumped 5-1.75 to tie for fourth. Ann Marie Curtis (Fr, La Crosse) was ninth in the high jump (4-9.75). Sara Pivec (Fr, Coon Rapids, Minn) was sixth in the shot put (36-11.75). Updated: May 18, 1999 |
