For the week of May 11-17Back to Athletics Home Page Back Issues Men's & Women's Track & FieldMay 18, 1998 BUCHHOLTZ HEADS INTO NATIONALS AS TOP SEED; GILLES OUT OF MEET MENOMONIE - UW-Stout freshman pole vaulter Jamie Buchholtz (Fr, Bloomer) will head into the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Macalester College May 21-23 as the No. 1 seed. At the UW-La Crosse Open May 13, Buchholtz vaulted 16-feet, 8.75-inches to grab the top spot at nationals. The Blue Devil men's track team will have eight competitors in six different events at the national meet and the women's team will send two competitors in three different events.Paul Gilles (Sr, Plum City), the 1997 national runner-up in the 3000-meter steeplechase, was seeded No. 5 in the event (9:06.92), but was forced to scratch from the meet because of a broken foot suffered last weekend. Tim Hamill (Jr, Brookfield), who advanced to nationals in the steeplechase last year, is seeded 13th (9:10.71) and will have to carry the flag for the Blue Devils. Jason Lehman (Sr, Bruce) will lead the way for the Blue Devils, qualifying automatically in three weight events, the shot put, discus and hammer throw. Lehman, who placed third last year in the discus, is currently seeded second in the event at 172-feet. Lehman is also seeded second in the shot put with a toss of 55-5.75. He is seeded eighth in the hammer throw with a mark of 174-7. All three of Lehman's marks are school records. Lehman will have teammate Corey O'Donnell (Jr, Chippewa Falls) to keep him company at the discus ring. O'Donnell qualified in the discus (162-2) to make his first trip to the national meet. O'Donnell did not advance in the hammer (164-0). The 4 X 400-meter relay team of John Boldt (Sr, Hartland), Billy Busch (Jr, Dickeyville), Ryan Geier (Fr, McFarland) and Chris Valois (Sr, Anoka, Minn) automatically qualified last week in a time of 3:14.96 and are seeded 10th. Boldt qualified provisionally in the 200-meter dash (21.86) and Busch in the 400-meter (48.70), but neither received an individual bid to the meet. On the women's side, Katie Jacobson (Jr, Eau Claire) and Katy Olsen (Jr, Rice Lake) automatically qualified in one event, with Jacobson provisionally qualified in two and Olsen in another. Jacobson had the fourth best time in the 800-meter run with a school record time of 2:13.23, but elected to run only the 1500 (4:40.64) where she is seeded eighth. Jacobson also provisionally qualified in the 3000-meter run (10:17.87), but did not get a bid. Olsen will run two events and is seeded fifth in the 10,000-meter run (36:51.31) and 11th in the 5000-meter (17:45.43). May 16, 1998 BOLDT, BUSCH MEET QUALIFYING SPRINT TIMES AT LAST CHANCE MEET MINNEAPOLIS, Minn -UW-Stout sprinters John Boldt (Sr, Hartland) and Billy Busch (Jr, Dickeyville) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Minnesota Last Chance Meet Saturday, May 16. Busch finished second in the 400-meter dash in a time of 48.70, while Boldt clocked a 21.86 in the 200-meter to finish third. Jason Lehman (Sr, Bruce), who has qualified atuomatically in three events, used the meet for a warm-up, placing fifth in the shot put (50-feet, 6-inches) and eighth in the discus (162-4). All performers that placed in front of Lehman were either unattached or Division I athletes. Elsewhere, Steve Quackenbush (So, McFarland)high jumped a career-high 6-4.75 and placed fifth. Aric Hanusa (Fr, Baraboo) was eighth in the pole vault (13-10). Ryan Geier (Fr, McFarland), who will join Boldt and Busch at the national meet as a member of the 4 X 400-meter relay team, placed fifth in the 400 (50.12) and seventh in the 200 (25.59). Troy Wyatt (Sr, Byron, Minn) was eighth in the 200 (26.33) and Busch was ninth (26.96).
May 13, 1998 1600 RELAY TEAM QUALIFIES TO NATIONAL MEET LA CROSSE-The UW-Stout 4 X 400-meter relay team took advantage of the UW-La Crosse Open to qualify automatically to the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships Wednesday, May 13. The team of Chris Valois (Sr, Anoka, Minn), John Boldt (Sr, Hartland), Ryan Geier (Fr, McFarland) and Billy Busch (Jr, Dickeyville) easily took first in the event at La Crosse in a time of 3-minutes, 14.96-seconds. Tim Hamill (Jr, Brookfield) also earned a return trip to the national meet by automatically qualifying in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:10.71. Paul Gilles (Sr, Plum City), improved on his automatic time in the event, finishing second in a time of 9:06.92. Jamie Buchholtz (Fr, Bloomer) improved his automatic qualifying height in the pole vault, sailing 16-feet, 8-inches. Jason Lehman (Sr, Bruce) tied for first in the shot put with a toss of 53-9.75, and was second in the discus with a 168-4.50. Both were automatic qualifiers, but Lehman has recorded better distances theis year. Lehman was sixth in the hammer (160-0). Corey O'Donnell (Jr, Chippewa Falls) finished third in the discus (154-1) and seventh in the hammer (137-8). Aric Hanusa (Fr, Baraboo) was seventh in the pole vault (14-4) and sixth in the javelin (147-0). Chad Beiler (Sr, Tomahawk) was sixth in the pole vault (14-10). Chris Stevens (Fr, New Richmond) was 11th in the steeplechase (9:39.02) and Josh Webb (Fr, Chippewa Falls) was 13th (10:22.0). At the St. Thomas Last Chance meet Thursday, May 14 in St. Paul, O'Donnell was first in the discus (150-1), and Busch was fourth in the 400-meter (50.65). Boldt led a trio of Stout runners in the 200-meter dash, placing fourth (22.19), with Troy Wyatt (Sr, Byron, Minn) finishing sixth (22.70) and Busch eighth (23.03).
May 13, 1998 JACOBSON COMES UP JUST SHORT OF SCHOOL RECORD IN 800 LA CROSSE-Katie Jacobson (Jr, Eau Claire) teased with the UW-Stout school record in the 800-meter run Wednesday, May 13 at the UW-La Crosse Open, but came up just short, but still met an NCAA Division III qualifying mark. Jacobson won the event in a time of 2-minutes, 13.94-seconds, just .71 seconds short of a mark she set in mid-April. Michelle Abramczak (Fr, Stanley) came up short in her bid to qualify to nationals in the 400-meter hurdles, drawing the inside lane and finishing fifth in a time of 1:07.83, well off the needed pace. Katy Olsen (Jr, Rice Lake) placed eighth in the 1500-meter run (4:53.48).
