O'CONNELL BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD AS BLUE DEVILS FALL TO POINTERS

MENOMONIE - UW-Stout's Brad O'Connell (Jr, Elk Mound) set a single season school record for home runs when he hit a solo shot to left field in the fifth inning of the first game, but that was about all the Blue Devils would have to cheer about as they dropped a conference doubleheader to UW-Stevens Point, 8-6, 19-5, Saturday, May 6 at Nelson Field.

The Blue Devils (17-17-1, 6-8) came into the game needing to sweep the Pointers (27-10, 9-4) to even have a chance of advancing to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) playoffs next weekend.

With Stout holding a slim 3-1 lead, the Pointers tied and went ahead, 4-3, in the seventh with three runs, then stretched the lead to 8-3 with four runs in the eighth.

Stout did answer back in the eighth when O'Connell hit a two-run single. Stout picked up a single run in the ninth on Justin Biever's (Fr, South Milwaukee) single.

The second game was almost over before it began. The Pointers scored in the first five innings to run off to a 13-0 lead. Stout, in danger of being eliminated by the 12-run rule, put together a three-run seventh to extend the contest. The Pointers tacked on one run in the eighth, then went on a five-run rampage in the ninth.

O'Connell, who reached his 14th homer of the season, breaking John Filas' 1989 record, went 5-for-9 on the day with three RBI and one stolen base. O'Connell also set the school record earlier in the season for most stolen bases, and currently has 26 thefts. Dave Rueber (Jr, Afton, Minn) was 4-for-9 for the day at the plate.

The Blue Devils will close out their 2000 campaign Tuesday, May 9 when they host Hamline University at 2:30 p.m. The game will mark the final contests for Blue Devils coach Terry Petrie, who is retiring after 30 years at the school.

BLUE DEVILS EARN A SPLIT WITH MIGHTY TITANS

MENOMONIE - Jake Fleming (Fr, Eau Claire) slashed a single and Lucas Martell (So, Kingsbury, Mich) knocked the ball out of the catcher's hand as he scored from second in the bottom of the ninth to lift UW-Stout to an 8-7 win over UW-Oshkosh in the second game of a conference doubleheader, Friday, May 5, at Nelson Field.

After getting blown out by the Titans, 21-8, in eight innings in the opener, the Blue Devils played Oshkosh even through much of the second game as starter Matt Lunde (So, Eau Claire) scattered 13 hits but still finished out the game to pick up the hard-earned win.

With one out, Martell singled to center field, then moved into scoring position when Brad O'Connell (Jr, Elk Mound) was hit by a pitch. Fleming, who did not start the game, came up for the game winning hit.

Trailing 7-4 going into the eighth, the Titans committed two errors, one of which led directly to a run. Eddie Young (So, La Crosse) cracked a two-run double to highlight the three-run inning to tie the score.

In the opener, the Titans were in fine offensive form, lighting up three Blue Devil pitchers for 25 hits. Oshkosh jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. Stout pulled to within 10-8, but Oshkosh exploded for seven runs in the seventh and four in the eighth.

Highlighting the game for Stout, O'Connell cracked two home runs to tie him for the single season home run record of 13 set by John Filas in 1989.

DEVILS HOLD OFF CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL, 15-13, IN EXTRA INNINGS

ST. PAUL, Minn - Brad O'Connell (Jr, Elk Mound) hit a three-run home run in the 10th inning, and the runs would be just enough to carry UW-Stout over Concordia-St. Paul, 15-13, Tuesday, May 2 at St. Paul, Minn.

Stout had a commanding 9-3 lead heading into the ninth inning of the non-conference contest, but the Bears collected six runs to knot the game at 9-9 to force extra innings.

Stout (16-14-1) made the best of the extra stanza when Nick Kalina (So, Potosi) hit a two run single to left field to jump out 11-9. O'Connell gave Stout a 14-9 lead and Dave Rueber (Jr, Afton, Minn) hit a sacrifice fly to end Stout's scoring.

The NCAA Division II Bears (7-17) would bang out four runs to throw a scare into the Blue Devils.

Stout took an early when JR Dachel (Sr, Bloomer) hit a two-run home run in the first. Concordia split the lead in half with a run in the fourth, but Stout answered back with three runs in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run double by Lucas Martell (So, Kingsford, Mich). Stout added four more runs in the eighth, while the Bears added single runs in the seventh and eighth before exploding for six in the ninth.

Kalina continued to move his batting average up, going 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. Martell was 1-for-3, but had three RBI with the double and a sacrifice fly.

Pinnow led the team at the plate, hitting .396, going 57-for-144 with a team high 35 runs batted in before breaking a finger with two games remaining on the schedule.

First baseman DePas hit a .318 clip, going 41-for-129 with four doubles, two home runs, 25 runs scored and 15 RBI. DePas was solid at first base, committing only six errors in 298 chances for a fielding percentage of .980.

Slaikeu played in 44 games, starting 43, with the majority at second base, but she also worked at catcher for a few games. She hit .279, going 43-for-154, with 27 runs scored, six doubles, one triple and 18 RBI, along with 18 stolen bases.

The Blue Devils finished the season at 17-28 overall, 2-6 in the WIAC.

BLUE DEVILS END SEASON AT CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT

OSHKOSH - Cara Fenhouse (Sr, Superior) hit a triple, then scored on a passed ball to give Stout a 4-3 lead over UW-River Falls in the fourth inning of the second game of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) softball tournament, but the Falcons scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to finish off Stout's season, Friday, May 5 at Oshkosh.

Stout (17-28) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning after Kristin Liberty (Sr, Tomahawk) and Molly Harms (So, Norwood-Young America, Minn) each drove in a run and Erin Slaikeu (Fr, North St. Paul, Minn) stole home. The Falcons (23-20) scored two runs in the bottom of the first when Jessie Welch hit a two-run homer, then picked up a single run in the third.

Stout lost an opportunity to score in the sixth when they left the bases loaded without any runs.

In the Blue Devils' first game of the tournament, UW-Eau Claire (21-13) held Stout to two hits to take a 3-0 win.

BLUE DEVILS BLANK ST. OLAF - TWICE

NORTHFIELD, Minn - Rebecca Zimmerman (Sr, Fall Creek) pitched a one-hitter in the second game and picked up two shutout wins as UW-Stout (17-26) defeated St. Olaf, 9-0, 13-0, Tuesday, May 2 in Northfield, Minn.

The games - the first was six innings, the second five innings - were the final regular season contests of the year for the Blue Devils.

In the second game, Zimmerman allowed her only hit - a bloop double - in the fifth inning.

Stout scored in eight of the 11 innings played, jumping out in front immediately in both games, picking up three runs in the first of the opener and two runs in the first of the nightcap.

Angie Pinnow (Jr, Bruce)
finished the day going 2-for-6 with two home runs, three RBI and two stolen bases, but also injured a finger on her throwing hand, ending her season. Jessie Ustby (So, Onalaska) was 4-for-5 with two RBI, three stolen bases, and four runs scored. Kristin Liberty (Sr, Tomahawk) was 3-for-6 with three RBI and two runs.

On the day, Stout stole 15 bases, grabbing six in the first game, nine in the second.
