FENHOUSE COMES OFF THE DISABLED LIST TO LEAVE HER MARK

RIVER FALLS - After almost two weeks off due to a hand injury, UW-Stout catcher Cara Fenhouse (Jr, Superior) wasted little time getting back into the swing of things. In her first at-bat since April 18, Fenhouse ripped an RBI single as the Blue Devils went on to down Northwestern College, 9-1, in the first game of the UW-River Falls Tournament Saturday, May 1.

Fenhouse would go on to make the best of the weekend as Stout went 1-3 in the tournament. Fenhouse batted .600 to raise her batting average to .455 on the season. At River Falls, Fenhouse had six hits in 10 at-bats, with a double, a triple, three RBIs and stole two bases in two attempts. Drawing two walks and getting hit by pitches twice, Fenhouse had an on-base percentage of .714 and a slugging percentage of .900.

Against Northwestern, the Blue Devils pounded out 13 hits on their way to a five-inning affair. Fenhouse went 3-for-3, while Bobbie Bailey (Fr, Stillwater, Minn), Kelley Espey (Fr, Byron, Minn) and Jill Tetu (Fr, Maplewood, Minn) each had two RBI.

The rest of the tournament wouldn't be so friendly for Stout, which dropped a 16-6 decision to River Falls later in the day, then fell, 10-5 to UW-Stevens Point and 6-2 to UW-Eau Claire, Sunday.

River Falls pounded Stout pitching in the second inning to the tune of nine runs. Espey went 2-for-3 and two RBIs, while Julie Newhouse (Fr, Decorah, Iowa) was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Blue Devils hadn't beaten Stevens Point or Eau Claire in two previous meetings each. And Sunday made it three as the Pointers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the fifth before Stout got on the board with three runs in the sixth. Tanya Petrie (Sr, Menomonie) drove in two runs in the inning and Angie Pinnow (So, Bruce) had another. But the Pointers put together a four-run sixth and Stout's Janel Krenz (So, McFarland) drove in two runs in the seventh.

The Blue Devils (9-25) had their opportunities with the Blugolds. Down 2-0 in the fourth, Espey hit a double to the wall to drive in Petrie and Pinnow. Eau Claire answered back in the fifth with two runs, then added a couple of insurance runs in the seventh.

The Blue Devils will conclude their season this weekend when they participate in WIAC championships May 7-8 in Stevens Point. The Blue Devils first round opponent has not yet been named, but Stout will probably play their first game at 9 a.m. Friday, May 7.

BLUE DEVILS DROP CONFERENCE PAIR TO RIVER FALLS

MENOMONIE - UW-Stout squandered a 4-0 lead in the first game, then could never quite comeback in the nightcap as the Blue Devils dropped their final Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) games to UW-River Falls, Wednesday, April 28 at Wakanda Park.

The Blue Devils fell 12-8, 10-5 to the visiting Falcons.

Stout struck quickly in the first inning of the opener, when Angie Pinnow (So, Bruce) reached on a triple, then scored when Tanya Petrie (Sr, Menomonie) reached on an error. Kelley Espey (Fr, Byron, Minn) drove in Petrie.

The Blue Devils (8-22, 1-7) repeated again in the third when Espey picked up her second RBI of the game and Molly Wagner (So, Eau Claire) singled home a run.

Then the bottom fell out as the Falcons (13-17-1, 3-5) racked up seven runs on five hits and one Blue Devil error in the top of the fourth.

Stout retaliated in the fifth with four runs as Petrie drove in two runs with a triple. Molly Harms (Fr, Norwood-Young America, Minn) and Jill Tetu (Fr, Maplewood, Minn) each had an RBI.

But that would be it for the Blue Devils as the Falcons matched Stout's four runs in the sixth to take an 11-8 lead. River Falls would add an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

River Falls struck for three runs in the first inning of the nightcap, but Stout answered with two of their own in the bottom half of the stanza as Espey hit a two-run single to score Pinnow and Harms.

River Falls chased starter Rebecca Zimmerman (Jr, Fall Creek) in the second with a lead off home run, then added another run in the inning for good measure. To Stout's credit, the Blue Devils again answered back to manufacture two runs in the bottom of the second. Bobbie Bailey (Fr, Stillwater, Minn) drove in Tetu, who reached on a leadoff walk, then Pinnow scored Rebecca Deuel (Fr, Big Lake, Minn), who had reached with a single, on a sacrifice to center field.

River Falls would never quit, tallying a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and two more in the seventh.

Stout scored a run in the fifth, but left the bases loaded in the inning.

BLUE DEVILS SPLIT SERIES WITH YELLOWJACKETS

SUPERIOR - The UW-Stout baseball team recovered from a 9-2 first game loss to come back and pound UW-Superior, 12-5, to split a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader Saturday, May 1, at Superior.

The Yellowjackets jumped all over Stout in the opener with two runs in the second and four in the third before Stout got on the board with two in the fourth. But the 'Jackets equalized that with two of their own in the bottom half of the stanza. Just for good measure, Superior tacked on another run in the sixth.

Stout (12-20, 4-6) could tally only six hits and committed three errors in the contest. Eric Lund (Fr, Ashland) continued to hit the ball hard, going 2-for4 with an RBI. Stout stranded 12 runners.

It looked to be the same thing in the nightcap, with the Yellowjackets jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Stout took the lead for good with a four-run second inning.

The Blue Devils chased the Yellowjackets (8-17) for four runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth.

Andy Guden (Jr, Medford) was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Josh Johnson (So, Oregon) was 2-for-5. Lund went 1-for-5, but scored two runs and delivered a solo home run, his second in two days.

Tate Cummins (Sr, Austin, Minn) stole two bases on the day, bringing his career total to 41, two short of the Stout career record.

The Blue Devils will wrap up their regular season next weekend when they host UW-Whitewater, Friday, May 7 at 1 p.m. and UW-Platteville, Saturday, May 8 at noon.

STOUT CONNECTS WITH PITCHING AND HITTING TO SWEEP RIVER FALLS

MENOMONIE - Tony Vitcenda (Jr, Elroy) provided the game winning hit in the first game and Eric Lund (Fr, Ashland) provided the power in the nightcap as UW-Stout swept UW-River Falls, 4-3, 8-3, in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader Friday, April 30 at Nelson Field.

With the Blue Devils (11-19, 3-5) trailing 3-2 in the opener, JR Dachel (Jr, Bloomer) scored on a passed ball to knot the score, then Vitcenda delivered a double down the right field line to score JW Dachel (Fr, Bloomer) for the final 4-3 decision.

Scott Meyer (Jr, Austin, Minn) went the distance giving up six hits, but no earned runs as he fanned two and walked two.

In the second game, Lund went 4-for-4 with two singles, a double, and a home run to tally three RBI.

Zak Arneson (So, Barneveld) went the distance and overcame some wildness - he hit five batters - striking out nine.

The Blue Devils delivered the big blow in the three-run fourth inning. Josh Johnson (So, Oregon) led off with a double. Lund delivered him home with a double of his own. Nick Kalina (Fr, Potosi) was hit by a pitch, then was moved by Ryan Hanson's (Sr, Austin, Minn) sacrifice bunt. A throwing error by the Falcons' (6-13-1, 3-5) first baseman scored both Lund and Kalina.

Lund and Kalina both singled home runs in the seventh.

BUCHHOLTZ WINS WIAC CROWN AS STOUT DOMINATES VAULT EVENT

RIVER FALLS - No one had to tell the UW-Stout pole vault crew to take a flying leap. The Blue Devils' Jamie Buchholtz (So, Bloomer) captured his second Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) pole vault crown as he took the event at the outdoor championships Friday, April 30 at River Falls.

Buchholtz led a crew of four Stout vaulters that scored in the event as he cleared 15-feet, 9.75-inches. Buchholtz had won the conference indoor event in March.

The Blue Devils only other first place finish came from the 4X400-relay team of Ryan Geier (So, McFarland), Troy Wyatt (Sr, Bryon, Minn), John Boldt (Sr, Hartland) and Billy Busch (Sr, Dickeyville), who clocked an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 3:15.48.
