STOUT BASEBALL TEAM COMES UP WITH SPLIT TO EAGLES

MENOMONIE – The UW-Stout baseball team pounded one of the top pitchers in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC), taking a 10-8 win over UW-La Crosse in the opener, but were stymied in the second game, falling 10-3, Saturday, April 26 at Nelson Field.

With nearly a dozen professional baseball scouts on hand, the Blue Devils chased Joe Ohm in the seventh inning, sending him to the bench after giving up all 10 runs, seven earned, off eight hits.

Stout wasted little time with Ohm. After Blue Devil starter Shawn Fonder (Sr, Menasha) surrendered a run to the Eagles in the top of the first, the Blue Devils gave Fonder some support by clubbing out three runs, with some help by two Ohm wild pitches.

Stout (19-15, 5-5) scored in nearly every inning, getting single runs in the second, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh and two runs in the third, a two-run home run by JR Dachel (So, Bloomer).

The Eagles (21-13, 5-5) pecked back. Fonder went out after giving up two runs in the sixth. Corey Paar (Jr, Black River Falls) tried to pick up his third save of the season, but he gave up three runs, two unearned and left the game with a runner on and the potential tying run at the plate. Troy Gustafson (Sr, Grand View) came out of the outfield to force a double play and save the game.

There would be no heroics for Stout in the nightcap. Stout took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third, but the Eagles pounded starter Zak Arneson (Fr, Barneveld) with five runs on six hits in the top of the fourth. The Eagles added a single run in the eighth and two runs in the ninth.

Stout made a run at the Eagles in th bottom of the ninth, but left the bases loaded.

Stout will close out the regular season this weekend, hosting UW-Stevens Point Friday, May 1 and UW-Oshkosh Saturday, May 2. Both games are at 1 p.m. and are nine-inning doubleheaders. The WIAC Championships are set for May 8-9 at the home of the regular season champion. The top four teams will advance.

BLUE DEVILS BOUNCE BACK TO SPLIT WITH FALCONS

RIVER FALLS Scott Meyer (So, Austin, Minn) pitched a complete game and picked up a 3-1 win as the UW-Stout baseball team split with UW-River Falls Friday, April 24, dropping the first game, 7-2, then coming back with the win at Ramer Field in River Falls.

In the opener, River Falls broke open a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the seventh with a six run explosion. Stout's Andy Guden (So, Medford) smacked a solo home run in the seventh.

In the nightcap, Stout (18-14, 4-4) got two runs in the top of the second when Guden and Ryan Hanson (Jr, Austin, Minn) reached on consecutive singles. Guden was driven home by Jake Mihm (Sr, Plover) and Hanson came home when JR Dachel (So, Bloomer) grounded out.

River Falls (14-11, 1-7) answered back with a single run in the bottom of the inning. Stout got a single run in the ninth when Shawn Fonder (Sr, Menasha) doubled in Hanson.

Meyer struck out four and walked two for his third win of the season.

STOUT SOFTBALL GOES 3-1 AT STEVENS POINT TOURNAMENT

STEVENS POINT-Who is the top softball team in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference? After participating in the UW-Stevens Point Tournament April 25-26, the UW-Stout Blue Devils can make a legitimate claim.

Stout, which won the WIAC's West Division last week, went 3-1 in the tournament and downed East Division champion UW-Stevens Point, 3-0, in the final game of the tournament. Saturday, Stout downed NCAA Division II opponent Winona State, 5-4, then avenged losses to Concordia-St. Paul with a convincing 9-3 win.

The Blue Devils (19-17, 7-1) opened up Sunday play with a 5-1 loss to Lawrence University, before bouncing back with the win over Stevens Point.

Stout came out of the tournament with the best overall record, posting a 3-1 mark. UW-River Falls was 3-2, and UW-Eau Claire, who Stout beat for the West Division title, and Stevens Point went 2-3.

Against the Pointers, Tanya Petrie (Jr, Menomonie) got things started, driving in Charysse Minder (Fr, Ellsworth) in the fourth inning. Stout added two runs in the fifth when Melanie Dubnicka (Fr, Cameron) and Molly Wagner (Fr, Altoona) stroked consecutive singles. Janel Krenz (Fr, McFarland) reached on an error, and Dubnicka scored. Minder singled home Wagner for the final run of the game.

Carolyn Bare (Sr, Superior) picked up the win, allowing three hits, striking out three and walking two.

In the Lawrence game, the Blue Devils stroked out three hits, but only had six runners reach base. Petrie got Stout's only run, hitting an in-the-park home run in the fourth. Lawrence got to starter Tiffany Wulf (Jr, Prior Lake, Minn) early, scoring two runs in the first and two in the second.

On Saturday, Deanna Johnson (Sr, Rochester, Minn) delivered the game-winning-hit in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Stout the 5-4 win over Winona. Bare recorded four strikeouts to get the win.

In the second game, Stout got three runs in the first and four in the fourth to avenge a sweep to Concordia last week. Minder, Angie Pinnow (Fr, Bruce) and Becky Wright (Fr, Eau Claire) each went 3-for-4 to lead the Devils. Wulf went the distance to get the win.

Stout will be at Winona State Tuesday, April 28 and then will be at the WIAC Championships May 1-2 at Eau Claire. The tournament schedule will be released Wednesday.

BLUE DEVILS SPLIT WITH BLUGOLDS, STILL WIN DIVISION TITLE

MENOMONIE – The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) West Division title looked firmly in hand for UW-Stout. The Blue Devils only needed a split with the Central Region's No. 1 ranked team, UW-Eau Claire, and were well on the way to taking the win. Then, near disaster struck for Stout, before Stout went on to a 4-3 first game win. The Blugolds (30-9, 6-2) roared back to win the second game, 9-0.

Taking a two-hit, 3-0 lead into the top of the seventh inning, then getting two routine outs, Stout (16-16, 7-1) committed two errors that led to three unearned runs and tied game.

Eau Claire's Becky Bourne worked Stout pitcher Carolyn Bare (Sr, Superior) for a walk. The game appeared over when Amy Henley hit a routine ground ball to shortstop Charysse Minder (Fr, Ellsworth). Minder flipped the ball to second basemen Cara Fenhouse (So, Superior) who couldn't get the handle and both runners were safe.

Niki Gangl drove in Bourne and Kenley advanced to third. Julie Hinzman reached first on an error, which brought in Kenley and moved Gangle to third. A past ball brought Gangl in and the score was tied 3-3. JoDell Bendickson grounded to first baseman Molly Wagner (Fr, Altoona) to get out of the inning.

Stout wasted little time getting the win.

Minder smashed a line drive to the left-centerfield wall for a double, and Angie Pinnow (Fr, Bruce) drove in Minder with a double to almost the exact spot to give Stout the 4-3 win and the Blue Devils' first ever West Division title.

Stout scored first in the second inning when Deanna Johnson's (Sr, Rochester, Minn) double drove in Tanya Petrie (Jr, Menomonie). Stout squandered an opportunity in the fourth inning, leaving the bases loaded.

The Blue Devils took advantage of two Eau Claire errors in the fifth inning to score two runs.

Bare picked up the win, and Carolyn Constant, who entered in the fifth inning, recorded the loss. Stout outhit Eau Claire, 10-3.

In the nightcap it was all Eau Claire with the Blugold's Heidi Bergstrom throwing a one-hitter. The Blugold offense worked three Stout pitchers for 15 hits and nine runs, eight earned runs.

CONCORDIA TRIPS UP STOUT SOFTBALL TWICE

MENOMONIE – Despite out-hitting Concordia-St. Paul in both games, the UW-Stout softball team couldn't figure out how to get runners home and fell to the Comets twice, 5-3, 6-5, in a doubleheader at Fowlers Court Tuesday, April 21.

The Blue Devils pounded out 11 hits in both games, but stranded nine runners in the first game. The Comets took a 2-0 lead before Stout came back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth when Angie Pinnow (Fr, Bruce), Carolyn Bare (Sr, Superior) and Tanya Petrie (Jr, Menomonie) each hit a double to drive in a run.

Concordia, which had defeated Stout earlier in the season, used the long ball in the sixth to take the game when Kelli Strehlo hit a three run home run for the win. Bare took the loss, giving up six hits, four earned runs, surrendered two walks and struck out six.

Stout (15-15) looked on the road to revenge in the second game, picking up two runs in the second. Petrie added a solo home run in the third. But Concordia added a solo run in the fourth, then chased Stout starter Tiffany Wulf (Jr, Prior Lake, Minn) in the fifth with a four-run attack. The Comets added a solo home run in the sixth to take a 6-3 lead, which Stout picked at with single runs in the sixth and seventh. Stout left the tying run stranded at second.

ST. SCHOLASTICA SNAPS BLUE DEVIL WINNING STREAK

DULUTH, Minn. – St. Scholastica snapped the UW-Stout softball team's 10-game winning streak by a 2-1 score, then went out and handed the short-handed Blue Devils a second 2-1 defeat in a doubleheader in Duluth, Minn., Monday, April 20.

Cara Fenhouse (So, Superior) went 2-for-3 at the plate in the opener for the Blue Devils, while Carolyn Bare (Sr, Superior) went 2-for-3 in the second game. Bare took the loss on the mound in the first game, only her fourth loss of season, and Tiffany Wulf (Jr, Prior Lake, Minn) picked up the nightcap loss.

In the first game, the Saints scored single runs in the first and third innings. Stout (15-13) added their only run in the fourth inning. The Saints picked up their two runs of the second game in the third inning, both unearned.

Stout was playing without five of its starters because of class commitments.
