SOFTBALL MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
April 18, 1999BLUE DEVILS GET TWO SHORT GAME WINS OVER MT. SENARIOMENOMONIE - UW-Stout softball parents got a treat as they witnessed their student/athletes pick up their first series sweep of the season as the Blue Devils downed Mt. Senario, 12-3, 14-6, in five innings in both games on Parent's Day Sunday, April 18 at Wakanda Park. Stout (8-16) shot out of the gates to collect six runs in the first inning of the opener, then went on to tally five runs in the third inning to provide the margin of victory for Rebecca Zimmerman (Jr, Fall Creek). Zimmerman struck out two and scattered seven hits to get her fourth win of the season. Cara Fenhouse (Jr, Superior) went 2-for-2, scored three runs and stole a base. Bobbie Bailey (Fr, Stillwater, Minn) drove in two runs, as did Kelley Espey (Fr, Byron, Minn). The second game ended almost as quickly, but did have a bit more drama. Stout again jumped out to a lead, this time 2-0 after one inning, but the Saints came marching back, racking up a single run in the second and three runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead. But the Blue Devils used five hits and two Senario errors to score eight runs in the third inning. The Saints (1-17) added single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Stout put together four more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Espey racked up two RBIs, while Becky Wright (So, Eau Claire), Angie Pinnow (So, Bruce), Tanya Petrie (Sr, Menomonie), Jill Tetu (Fr, Maplewood, Minn), Rebecca Deuel (Fr, Big Lake, Minn) and Fenhouse each drove in a run. Deuel recorded her fourth win of the season, striking out four.
April 15, 1999BLUE DEVILS COME UP JUST SHORT FOR SPLITLA CROSSE - With a single stroke of the bat, UW-La Crosse's Beth Gordon wiped out any chance the UW-Stout softball team would have of gaining a split over the Eagles, Thursday, April 15 in La Crosse. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh and Stout holding a 2-1 tenuous lead, Gordon blasted a two-run single into right-centerfield and give the Eagles a 3-2 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) win. Earlier in the rainy, cold day, the Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead and built on that to take a 7-4 first game win. In the decisive seventh inning of the second game, with a 2-0 lead, the Blue Devils allowed two runners, then gunned the leadoff runner out at the plate. The Eagles' Jenny Nelson sacrificed in the first run, and then the walls fell in for the Blue Devils. A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases up for Gordon's heroics. Stout (6-16, 1-3) was limited to three hits in the game, but made the most of their time at the plate. Cara Fenhouse (Jr, Superior) singled in Angie Pinnow (So, Bruce) in the first. Pinnow scored Janel Krenz (So, McFarland) in the third inning when she reached on an error. In the first game, the Eagles (15-7, 4-1) scored three runs on four hits in the first, then scored single runs in the second, third, fifth and sixth. Pinnow picked up an RBI in the third, Bobbie Bailey (Fr, Stillwater, Minn) got one in the fourth and Rebecca Deuel (Fr, Big Lake, Minn) drove in a run in the sixth. Molly Harms (Fr, Norwood-Young America, Minn) drove in a run in the seventh and Stout had runners on first and second, but a fly out and ground out ended the comeback attempt.
April 13, 1999BLUE DEVILS SPLIT WITH YELLOWJACKETSMENOMONIE - The UW-Stout softball team won one and lost one in a double header with UW-Superior at home, Tuesday. The Blue Devils were clicking on all cylinders in the first game. In the second inning, Janel Krenz (So, McFarland) singled in Jill Tetu (Fr, Maplewood) to put Stout's first run on the board. Superior scored once in the third to knot things up at 1-1, but in the home half of the inning, Stout busted out to score three more runs. Tanya Petrie blasted a double to centerfield, driving in Cara Fenhouse (Jr, Superior) and Angie Pinnow (So, Bruce). Becky Wright (So, Eau Claire) also came around to score, giving the Blue Devils a 4-1 lead going into the fourth. From that point, starting pitcher Rebecca Deuel (Fr, Big Lake, Minn.) had all she needed. Deuel went the distance, allowing one run on only four hits. The Blue Devils added one run in the fifth and went on to win 6-1. In the second game, Superior starter Judy Jenson was untouchable. The Yellowjacket pitcher tossed a six-inning shutout, helping her team to an 8-0 win. Offensively, Superior wasted no time. The Yellowjackets posted two runs in the first inning and one more in the third. Then, in the fourth, Jenson drove in Karrie Demulling and Brandi Barnes with a two-out single. With Superior up 4-0, Stout mounted a threat in the fifth. After two were away, Fenhouse stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. She rocked a lofty flyball, which appeared to be headed for the gap in left-center, but Superior centerfielder Robin Sellwood made a diving catch to stymie the blue Devils' rally. Superior left nothing to chance in the sixth. After two runs had already scored, Jen Walto blasted a two-run homer over the centerfield wall, giving the Yellowjackets an 8-0 lead. After a lead-off single by Tanya Petrie (Sr, Menomonie), Jenson sent the rest of the Blue Devils down in order in the sixth. The game was then ended on account of the eight-run rule. Stout, now 6-14 overall (1-1 in conference), will be back in action this Sunday as the Blue Devils host Mt. Senario at 1 p.m. at Wakanda Park. Stout's next conference showdown will be at UW-La Crosse on Thursday.
April 17, 1999BATTERY COMBINES TO GIVE STOUT A SPLIT WITH LA CROSSELA CROSSE - The UW-Stout battery proved to be the decisive factor in the second game as the Blue Devils split a conference-opening doubleheader with UW-La Crosse Saturday, April 17 in La Crosse. In the seventh inning, catcher Nick Sattler (Fr, Wausau) launched a bases loaded, two out double to drive in three runs, and his battery-mate, Matt Lunde (Fr, Eau Claire) did the rest as Lunde picked up his first collegiate shutout - and his second win in five days - for a 3-0 win. Earlier in the day, the Blue Devils (6-14, 1-1) could not hang on and dropped a 5-4, 10-inning decision, to the Eagles. Sattler's heroics almost didn't happen. With two outs, Nick Kalina (Fr, Potosi) struck out, but reached first on a passed ball. The next two Blue Devil batters were hit by a pitch to load the bases for Sattler, who delivered his second game-winning RBI in a week. Earlier in the week, Sattler got the eventual game winner against Concordia-St. Paul, the same game Lunde picked up his first collegiate win. Against the Eagles (11-10, 1-1), Lunde went toe-to-toe with hard-throwing Andy Elskamp, who would strike out 11 Blue Devils and allowed only three hits. But Lunde would get the final laugh, tossing a five-hitter and striking out five. In the opener, Stout scored a single run in the top of the second, but the Eagles added two runs in the third and a single run in the fourth. Stout tied the score in the seventh when Sattler got things going with a single to center then advanced to third on Ryan Hanson's (Sr, Austin, Minn) double. Tate Cummins (Sr, Austin, Minn) picked up two RBIs with a single. Stout tacked on a run in the eighth when Josh Johnson (So, Oregon) drove in Kalina, but the Eagles added a run in the bottom of the inning. The Blue Devils left the bases loaded in the top of the 10th, before the Eagles' Denver Harris hit a leadoff home run in bottom of the 10th to end the game. The Blue Devils are scheduled to be at Augsburg College, Monday, April 19, then return home to face Martin Luther College, Wednesday, April 21 at noon. Stout will be at UW-Stevens Point Friday, April 23 and at UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, April 24.
April 13, 1999BLUE DEVILS PULL OUT ONE WIN IN HIGHLY CONTESTED DOUBLE HEADERMENOMONIE - Ninth inning rallies were the story of the day at Nelson Field, Tuesday. In the opening game of a double header, Concordia-St. Paul scored one run in the final frame to break a 2-2 tie and win 3-2, but in the second game, Stout did not allow the Comets to repeat their late-inning heroics. This time, the Blue Devils shut the door on Concordia's ninth-inning surge and captured the 5-4 win. Concordia starting pitcher Brandon Hollingsworth looked unhittable early. He struck out five of the first eight Blue Devil batters but then began to have some control problems in the third. Nick Sattler (Fr, Wausau) drew a walk to start things off and then advanced to second on a ground out by Nick Kalina (Fr, Potosi). With one away, Ryan Hanson (Sr, Austin, Minn.) reached on an error by the shortstop. J.R. Dachel (Jr, Bloomer) then grounded out but drove in Sattler and advanced Hanson to third where he later scored on a wild pitch. Stout starter Jake Streich (Fr, Howard Lake, Minn.) made the 2-0 Blue Devil lead stand up until the sixth inning. Back-to-back singles by Hollingsworth and Tony Nault scored two, knotting things up at 2-2. The score would stay same until the Concordia half of the ninth. Dustin Campbell drew a one-out walk, then stole second base and advanced to third as Streich threw a wild pitch. In an attempt to cut down Campbell, Sattler overthrew the third baseman, allowing the go-ahead run to score. Hollingsworth sent the Blue Devils (5-13) down in order in the ninth, securing the Comets 3-2 victory. In the second game, both teams traded runs in the first. Stout added two more in both the second and fourth innings to take a 5-1 lead. The Blue Devils' number seven, eight, and nine hitters sparked Stout's offensive attack. J.W. Dachel (Fr, Bloomer), Josh Johnson (So, Oregon), and Sattler went a combined 7 for 9 and drove in four of Stout's five runs. The Comets (9-15) added one in the fifth but still trailed 5-2 going into the final inning; nonetheless, Concordia would not go down quietly. With one out in the ninth, Campbell singled. The next two batters walked, loading the bases. Then, Tim Lockwood was hit by a pitch, forcing in Campbell. Matt Lunde (Fr, Eau Claire) recovered to strike out the next man, but a two-out single by Dave Germar pulled the Comets to within one at 5-4. But Lunde forced the next batter to fly out to right, ending the game. Stout is scheduled to host Martin Luther College Thursday, April 15 at noon and will travel to UW-La Crosse Saturday to open to the WIAC schedule.
April 12, 1999STOUT DROPS TIGHT DOUBLEHEADER TO ST. THOMASST. PAUL, Minn - The first one was a slugfest, the second wasn't but the results were the same as UW-Stout dropped a pair of one-run contests to St. Thomas, Monday, April 12 in St. Paul, Minn. The two teams combined for 21 hits in the first game as the Tommies took a 5-4 win in the opener, but then the hits were cut in half as the teams tallied 10 hits as St. Thomas won a 1-0 decision in nine innings in what was intended to be a seven inning game. The games were originally scheduled for Saturday, April 10, but were postponed due to inclement weather. Zak Arneson (So, Barneveld) went the distance in the opener, allowing three runs in the bottom of the first, then allowed only two runs the rest of the way. The winning run came in the bottom of the sixth inning when the Tommies tallied an unearned run with two outs. Scott Meyer (Jr, Austin, Minn) completed the second contest, giving up the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. The Tommies (17-3) started off the stanza with two singles, then Meyer forced an out. The Tommies' All-America Matt Faulken stroked in the winning RBI as a pinch hitter. Meyer struck out five and walked two. Tom Kelly, the son of Minnesota Twins manager Tom Kelly, came on in relief to pick up the win in two innings of work. Stout (4-12) returns to action Tuesday, April 13 at noon when they host Concordia-St. Paul in the home opener. The Blue Devils will host Martin Luther College Thursday, April 15 and then will open up conference play when they travel to UW-La Crosse Saturday, April 17.
