BLUE DEVILS BELT 28 HITS IN SWEEP OF AUGSBURG COLLEGE

MENOMONIE - It was almost like the days of old when the UW-Stout baseball team consisted of mostly "Bash Brothers" type players. But this was the 1998 version of Stout baseball as the Blue Devils (11-7) belted out 28 hits, seven doubles, one triple, and three home runs in a 12-0, 15-4 sweep of Augsburg College Sunday, April 5 at Nelson Field. Oh, by the way, Stout also recorded 11 stolen bases in the two games - that's the 1998 twist.

Brett Blair (Jr, Woodbury, Minn) picked up the win in the opener, scattering five hits, giving up five walks and recording five strikeouts.

Blair got offensive backup immediately, when the Blue Devils recorded a seven-run first inning, then handed him an insurance policy in the third inning with five more runs, highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Jake Mihm (Sr, Plover) and Shawn Fonder (Sr, Menasha).

The Blue Devils ran wild on the bases, nabbing seven in eight attempts. Tate Cummins (Jr, Austin, Minn) and Andy Guden (So, Medford) each recorded two stolen bases.

The game was ended after seven inning due to the 12-run rule.

Third baseman Brad O'Connell (Fr, Elk Mound) provided much - but not all - of the Blue Devils' offensive output in the 15-4 nightcap. O'Connell went 3-for-4, scored four runs and picked up three RBI. He belted one of Stout's five doubles and also recorded a triple.

The Auggies took a 1-0 lead in the third, but O'Connell's triple in the fourth gave Stout a 2-1 lead. JR Dachel's (Fr, Bloomer) double gave Stout a 4-1 lead at the end of the fourth.

Troy Gustafson (Sr, Grand View) launched a "no-doubt" home run in the fifth inning to left field on his way to a 2-for-4 day with three RBI.

After surrendering three runs in the bottom of the sxith and matching the Auggies with two runs in the seventh, Stout put the game out of reach with five runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Cummins had an outstanding afternoon at the plate, going 4-for-8 with three RBI and five runs scored. He also picked up four stolen bases.

Scott Meyer (So, Austin, Minn) recorded the win, working six innings, giving up six hits, two runs, one earned run, three walks and a strikeout. Gustafson came to the mound in the final two innings, notching three strikeouts.

The Blue Devils begin a very busy Easter week, traveling to Mt. Senario Wednesday, April 8, then come home to host nationally-ranked St. Thomas Thursday, April 9 at 2:30 p.m. The Blue Devils begin the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) schedule Saturday, April 11 when they host UW-Superior. All games are doubleheaders.

Stout could also hand coach Terry Petrie a milestone this week. Petrie needs only four wins to get to 500 career wins.

BLUE DEVIL SOFTBALL REBOUNDS TO WIN TWO AT OWN TOURNAMENT

MENOMONIE - After being shut out twice in the first day of their own UW-Stout Fastpitch Softball Tournament, the Blue Devils bounced back to win two close contests in the second day of the tournament Saturday, April 4 at Wakanda Park.

Stout (7-11) opened up Saturday with a 6-4 nine-inning win over UW-Platteville, then squeaked past Bethel College, 2-1. Stout had been shut out Friday, 3-0 by St. Olaf, and 9-0 by St. Thomas.

Against Platteville, Angie Pinnow (Fr, Bruce) smashed a triple in the top of the ninth to drive home Carolyn Bare (Sr, Superior) with the winning run. Pinnow came home moments later on a wild pitch to give Stout a two-run cushion. Bare picked up the win when she forced two ground balls and recorded a strikeout.

Pinnow and Cara Fenhouse (So, Superior) each batted 3-for-5 to lead the Blue Devils at the plate.

In the Bethel game, both teams scored in the first inning and carried that through until the seventh inning when Pinnow singled, then stole second. Two batters later, Deanna Johnson (Sr, Rochester, Minn) brought her home with a hit down the left field line.

Tiffany Wulf (Jr, Prior Lake, Minn) picked up the win in relief, but had to do it the hard way.

Wulf gave up a lead-off hit to Bethel's Lori Peters in bottom of the seventh. Peters advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt back to Wulf. Wulf then snagged a wicked line drive at about hip level, and finished up the game when she threw out the final batter on a soft grounder back to the mound.

On Friday, the Blue Devils gave up runs to St. Olaf in the first, third and sixth. Stout's best chance for runs came in the fourth when they stranded runners at second and third.

Against St. Thomas, Stout had only two batters reach base. Pinnow slammed a ball deep into left-centerfield in the second inning, but was thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple. Fenhouse reached on a walk in the bottom of the seventh and advanced to second on an error.

The Tommies scored immediately in the first, then scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth. The walls fell in for Stout in the top of the seventh when St. Thomas scored five runs, all unearned, for the final 9-0 score.

Stout opens up Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) West Division action Tuesday, April 7 when they travel to UW-River Falls.

GILLES BREAKS TRACK STEEPLECHASE RECORD AS STOUT SWEEPS EVENT

MENOMONIE - Paul Gilles (Sr, Plum City) led a UW-Stout 1-2-3 sweep of the 3000-meter steeplechase as he set a Nelson Field record in the event at the UW-Stout Outdoor Track and Field Invitational Saturday, April 4.

Gilles, who holds the Blue Devil school record in the steeplechase and last year placed second at the outdoor nationals, paced the field in a time of 9-minutes, 17-seconds. Tim Hamill (Jr, Brookfield), who also qualified to nationals last year, was second (9:30) and Bryan Ott (Fr, Monroe) was third (10:20).

As a team, Stout finished fourth in the 10-team meet with 120 points.

Jamie Buchholtz (Fr, Bloomer) captured a first in the pole vault (15-9.75) and was second in the triple jump (41-1).

Jason Lehman (Sr, Bruce) matched two provisional qualifying distances, taking first in the discus (161-5) and second in the shot put (52-1.25). Lehman was also second in the hammer throw (150-6).

Kevin McCulley (Fr, Fond du Lac) took first in the javelin (166-10) in his first time throwing the spear in competition.

The 4 X 400-relay team just missed the provisional qualifying time, but easily won the event (3:18.49).

Sean Fagan (Sr, Janesville) placed second in the long jump (22-2.50) and Corey O'Donnell (Sr, Chippewa Falls) recorded two thirds, in the discus (142-8) and hammer (147-0). Steve Quackenbush (So, McFarland) was third in the high jump (6-3.25).

KATY OLSEN EARNS TICKET TO NATIONAL TRACK MEET

MENOMONIE - There were three runners entered in the women's 10,000-meter run at the UW-Stout Outdoor Track and Field Invitational Saturday, April 4, but it quickly became a race between two of the top long distance runners in the Midwest.

UW-Stout's Katy Olsen (Jr, Rice Lake) and UW-Superior's Sarah Anderson pushed each other the entire, grueling 10,000-meters. Anderson got the upper hand in the end, coming in at 36-minutes, 46.43 seconds to Olsen's 36:51.31, but in the process both were assured of seeing each other at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships next month. Both shattered the automatic qualifying time of 37:10.74.

The Blue Devils finished fourth as a team with 94 points in the eight team meet.

Stout picked up first place finishes from Katie Jacobson (Jr, Eau Claire) in the 800 in a provisional qualifying time of 2:15.56 and Michelle Abramczak (Fr, Stanley) in the 400-low hurdles (1:10.24).
