For the week of March 23 - March 29Back to Athletics Home Page Back Issues BaseballMarch 27, 1998BLUE DEVILS SWEEP SERIES OVER MAYVILLE STATE AT METRODOMEMINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - After getting a gift to win the first game, the UW-Stout baseball team left little doubt in the nightcap as the Blue Devils swept Mayville, S.D., State University, 3-2, 7-2, Friday, March 27 at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. In the opener, Ryan Hanson (Jr, Austin, Minn) got the winning RBI, even though he struck out in the bottom of the sixth. With JR Dachel (So, Bloomer) on third base and Hanson at the plate, Mayville pitcher Kevin Penny was called for a balk to bring Dachel in with the game-winning run. Mayville took the lead in the top of the fourth with a two-run outburst, but Stout answered back in the bottom of the inning. Luke Welch (Sr, Menomonie) was hit by a pitch, then came home when Troy Gustafson (Sr, Grand View) tripled off the first pitch. Hanson then doubled to bring in Gustafson. The Blue Devils (9-7) used four pitchers, with Zak Arneson (Fr, Barneveld) picking up the win, working the fifth and sixth innings and striking out two. Gustafson came on in the final inning to pick up the save. Stout grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second game when Hanson drove in Gustafson in the top of the third, but Mayville knotted the score in the bottom of the inning. The Blue Devils took control in the sixth, using three Mayville errors to score six runs. Gustafson led all batters, going 2-for-4 with two doubles. Matt Sias (Jr, Pine City) came on in relief to pick up the win. Stout returns to action Sunday, April 5 when they host Augsburg College at 1 p.m. at Nelson Field. SoftballMarch 27, 1998STOUT SOFTBALL SPLITS GAMES AT CONCORDIA TOURNAMENTST. PAUL - Kristin Liberty (So, Tomahawk) smacked a two-out double in the top of the eighth inning to give UW-Stout a 4-3 win over Mayville State in second day competition of the Concordia-St. Paul tournament at the Arlington-Rice Indoor Dome Friday, March 27. The Blue Devils (5-9) lost their second game, a 9-8 six-inning decision to host Concordia. Liberty drove in Angie Pinnow (Fr, Bruce) who got on with a single, then stole second. In the second game, Concordia scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth for the win in the time-shortened contest. The Blue Devils built an 8-6 lead in the top of the sixth when Charysse Minder (Fr, Ellsworth) drove in Liberty, then scored when Jesse Ustby (Fr, Onalaska) doubled to bring in Minder. Stout finished the tournament at 2-2 and will return to action Friday, April 3 when they host the two-day UW-Stout Tournament at Wakanda Park. Results of the tournament will be posted on the Blue Devil softball home page approximately one hour after completion of the final game of each days' competition. March 26, 1998UW-STOUT WOMEN'S SOFTBALL SPLIT GAMES AT CONCORDIA TOURNAMENTST. PAUL, Minn. - Charysse Minder (Fr, Ellsworth), playing in her first collegiate softball game, drove in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the UW-Stout softball team a 3-2 win over Bemidji State in the first game of the Concordia-St. Paul Tournament, Thursday, March 26. The Blue Devils dropped their second contest, 4-3, in five innings to Coe College. In the opener, Minder lofted a sacrifice fly ball to deep left field to score Kristin Liberty (So, Tomahawk), who had driven in the tying run one batter earlier with a triple. Stout took the lead in the bottom of the first when lead-off hitter Cara Fenhouse (So, Superior) got on with a single, was moved to second on a balk, advanced to third on an error and scored on a passed ball. The Beavers knotted the score in the second, then took the lead in the top of the sixth. Stout started their comeback with a single by Deanne Johnson (Sr, Rochester, Minn) followed by Liberty and Minder's game-winning trips to the plate. Against Coe, Stout (4-8) scored three runs in the top of the first inning, loading the bases with a hit pitch and two walks. Carolyn Bare (Sr, Superior) drove in two runs and Angie Pinnow (Fr, Bruce) singled home another. Stout only got four more runners on the rest of the way. Coe scored a single run in the second and won the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth on four hits. Both games were restricted to 90 minute time limits. GymnasticsMarch 28, 1998BRENNA JONES PLACES 10TH AT NATIONAL GYMNASTICS MEETPROVIDENCE, R.I. - Adding difficulty to her routine paid off for UW-Stout's Brenna Jones (Fr, St. Paul, Minn) as she placed tenth at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championships on the floor exercise and in the process, established a new school record on the event Friday, March 27. In the first round of competition, Jones advanced to the finals when she nailed a 9.50 in the meet held at Rhode Island College in Providence, R.I. Very few competitors improved on their scores in the finals competition, and Jones was not different, scoring a 9.150 to finish with 18.65 total points (9.33 average). The Blue Devils' other competitor, Angie Arens (Sr, Loretto, Minn) didn't fare quite as well, scoring an 8.95 on the vault in the opening round. Arens did not advance to the second day of competition, but her score was the top Blue Devil score on the vault for the season. Jones and Arens' appearances at the nationals was the first time for a Stout competitor since 1993. Ithaca College won the team event edging out UW-La Crosse, 148.875-148.675 for the top spot. Stout did not compete as a team. Women's Track & FieldMarch 28, 1998SOMMERFELDT SETS SCHOOL RECORD IN JAVELINATLANTA, Ga.- Gretchen Sommerfeldt (Sr, Hartland) set a UW-Stout school record in the javelin when she threw 117-feet, 1-inch to place second at the Emory Classic outdoor track and field meet in Atlanta, Ga., Saturday, March 28. Sommerfeldt's toss surpassed the mark of 114-7 that Brenda Edwards set in 1992. Sommerfeldt had thrown the javelin 114-feet last year. Katie Jacobson (Jr, Eau Claire) placed second in the 3000-meter run (10:17.87) and Katy Olsen (Jr, Rice Lake) was fourth in the 3000 (10:22.19). Jennifer Turner (Fr, Eden Prairie) was fifth in the hammer throw (120-2) and Michelle Abramczak (Fr, Stanley) was fifth in the 400-hurdles (1:10.30). As a team, Stout placed 11th with 21 points. Western Carolina won the meet with 108 points. Stout will open the outdoor northern schedule when they host the UW-Stout Invitational Saturday, April 4 at 11 a.m. at Nelson Field.
