ERIC LUND NAMED WIAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

MADISON - Eric Lund (So, Ashland), a UW-Stout linebacker was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Football Defensive Athlete of the Week. Lund finished the game, Saturday, Sept. 19, against St. Ambrose of Davenport, Iowa, with three solo tackles, seven assisted tackles and five tackles for losses of 29 yards. He also was credited with two pass break ups and two sacks for 18 yards. The game - which Stout won, 27-22 - featured a 2-hour, 30-minute rain and lightning delay and was completed in 5 hours and 34 minutes at 12:34 a.m. Sunday. The Blue Devils defense held St. Ambrose to 12 yards rushing. Lund is a transfer from North Dakota State and his older brother, Shawn, a junior, was the Blue Devils' pick for their offensive player of the week with his 127 yard rushing effort against the Fighting Bees.

EVEN LENGTHY RAIN DELAY DOESN'T DETER STOUT WIN

MENOMONIE - Of the five-hours, 34-minutes it took for UW-Stout to defeat St. Ambrose, 27-22, Saturday, Sept. 19 at Nelson Field, the Blue Devils literally waited until the final minute to notch the victory.

After nearly four entire quarters and a two-and-a-half hour rain and lightning delay, Stout's Shawn Lund (Jr, Ashland) scampered into the end zone on a 3-yard run with 52 seconds remaining in the game for the win.

The Fighting Bees did not give up, but could only push the ball to their own 45, where three consecutive passes fell incomplete as Stout took over on downs.

The teams played to a 13-13 halftime tie when the rain, lightning and high winds delayed play before the second half could begin. The game was not completed until 12:34 a.m.

The teams came out in a light rain, which completely stopped before the completion of the third quarter, and St. Ambrose (1-1) took a 15-13 lead when Stout (2-1) snapped the ball over the punter and out of the end zone at the 13:54 mark of the third quarter.

The Blue Devils retook the lead when Tom Shaffner (So, Janesville) returned a St. Ambrose punt 56-yards into the end zone at 3:38 in the quarter.

St. Ambrose then drove 66 yards in eight plays, and capped off the drive with a 1-yard score by Andrew McFedries to go ahead 22-21.

Working out of the shotgun from their own 35, quarterback Matt Bunyan (Sr, Janesville) threw for five completions before Lund got the winning run.

St. Ambrose took an early lead, kicking a 31-yard field, but Stout answered back when Lund ran five times for 35 yards and a 4-yard touchdown. The drive was aided by a Bunyan to Billy Busch (Jr, Dickeyville) 24-yard completion.

The Bees kept plugging away, pulling to within 7-6 on another Brian Hanssen field goal, then McFedries added his first score of the night at 8:13 in the second quarter. Stout knotted the score as they marched 59 yards in 10 plays, with Bunyan scoring on the keeper.

The Blue Devils outgained St. Ambrose, 336 yards to 286, and held the Bees to 12 yards rushing in 35 attempts. Stout had a more balanced attack, picking up 114 yards on the ground and 222 in the air.

Lund led all rushers with 127 yards - his second consecutive 100 yard game - but Stout's totals were affected by the errant punt.

Bunyan picked up all of Stout's passing yardage, with Jesse Diaz (Jr, Cottage Grove) getting 89 yards on eight receptions.

Joe Austin passed for all of St. Ambrose's yardage, with Tom Furlan picking up 184 yards on seven catches.

The Blue Devils will get the next week off before they host UW-La Crosse Saturday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. for the annual Hall of Fame game.

BLUE DEVILS OUTGUNNED BY POINTERS

STEVENS POINT — It was time to get out of Dodge City as the UW-Stout soccer team suffered the worst defeat in Blue Devil soccer history, falling 10-1 to UW-Stevens Point Sunday, Sept. 20 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match-up at Stevens Point.

The Pointers (4-2-2) shot early and shot often, outgunning the Blue Devils, 36-6. The Pointers' Hope Wadel proved to be the leading sharpshooter, opening up the scoring at the 13:29 mark, then going on to add three more goals.

Stout goalkeeper Nikki Bezak (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn), who was pulled after the 57th minute, made 12 saves before leaving, but the Pointers took advantage of rebounds off Bezak. Bezak allowed six goals.

Stout (3-5, 1-2) did manage to shoot a hole in the shutout when Alyssa Halverson (Sr, Rochester, Minn) ended the drought with a goal at the 71 minute mark. Carrie Blaska (Sr, Ramsey, Minn) recorded the assist.

The Blue Devils will regroup and get ready to face UW-River Falls Thursday, Sept. 24 at 4 p.m. at the River Heights School field.

WARHAWKS DOWN STOUT IN FINAL MINUTE OF PLAY

MENOMONIE — UW-Whitewater's Tiffany Straukas scored a goal in the final minute of play to lift the Warhawks over UW-Stout, 2-1, Saturday, Sept. 19 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action at the River Heights Elementary School field.

With time running down, Straukas took a shot that bounced in front of the Stout net, hit the cross bar and trickled across the line for the deciding goal.

After a scoreless first half, the Warhawks (2-5, 1-0) scored at the 56:29 mark when Karen Raasch scored on a breakaway.

The Blue Devils (3-4, 1-1) returned the favor seven minutes later when Alyssa Halverson (Sr, Rochester, Minn) took a pass from Beth Bushman (So, Alexandria, Minn) for the score.

UW-STOUT DOWNS SHORTHANDED MOUNT SENARIO, 4-0

LADYSMITH — UW-Stout defeated a shorthanded Mt. Senario squad, 4-0, Tuesday, Sept. 15 in Ladysmith.

The first goal of the game was scored by Shannon Camp (So, Blaine, Minn), opened up the scoreing at the 31 minute mark, getting an assist from Alyssa Halverson (Sr, Rochester, Minn). Halverson recorded a second assist, sending the ball to Becky Howard (Fr, Wauwatosa, Wis), for the second goal of the first half.

At the start of the second half, Halverson opened up the second half with a goal of her own, and the assist coming from Heather Pihl (So, Cottage Grove, Minn). Stout finished the game with one more goal from Becca Carlson (Jr, Rosemount, Minn), with the assist from Howard.

The shutout was Stout's second consecutive shutout win, with Nikki Bezak (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn) and Noel Green (So, Alexandria, Minn) sharing the honors in the net.

JUDY SPAIN AWARDED UW-STOUT DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

MENOMONIE - Until her retirement two years ago, Judy Spain was a fixture at UW-Stout athletic events - not only at the games but behind the scenes. Because of her efforts, Spain will receive the UW-Stout Distinguished Service Athletic Award at the annual Hall of Fame banquet Saturday, Oct. 3.

Spain, who was employed at the university in residence life from 1967-96, served as the Stout faculty representative to the Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WWIAC) from 1989-96, but was very involved in the athletic department well before that.

Spain worked with the Athletic Committee, was a member of the Hall of Fame committee, served on several committees to select coaching staff and the athletic director, was a member of the Physical Education and Athletics Task Force, was a neutral observer of basketball officials and worked the scoring table for gymnastics.

As a faculty representative, Spain served as the committee's vice president and was the co-chair of the WWIAC's 25th anniversary celebration.

In her job with residence life, where she was the director from 1972-96, she received numerous awards, both from the university and from various professional organizations. In 1995, Spain was awarded the UW-Stout Outstanding Service Award and was named an assistant professor emeritus in 1996. She received the highest national awards for the Association of College and University Housing Officers International Leadership, both as an active employee and as a retiree.

The student/athlete was always a special focus for Spain, who fought relentlessly for the women's athletic programs during their formative years.

"I enjoyed watching UW-Stout women's and men's team for 29 years," Spain said. "It was a joy to know the athletes and coaches personally."

Spain presently resides in San Francisco, Calif., where she works as a volunteer for the National Park Service in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Retirement also allows her to pursue her lifelong passion for golf, playing in two leagues.

The Hall of Fame banquet is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., Oct. 3, in the Terrace of the Memorial Student Center. Tickets are $10. For more information, call the UW-Stout Athletic Department at 715-232-2224.
