FOUR BLUE DEVILS NAMED TO ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS
MENOMONIE - Four members of the UW-Stout women's basketball team were named to the 1998 all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team.
Named to the first team were forward Shannon Berg (Jr, Ellsworth) and guard Rachel Traynor (Jr, Ellsworth/Spring Valley HS). Wing guard Charysse Minder (So, Ellsworth) was an honorable mention pick.
Staci Rademacher (Sr, Cottage Grove/Sun Prairie HS) was named to the all-defensive team.
Berg was the Blue Devils' leading scorer, averaging 10.9 points per game and 11.3 points in conference play. Able to hit the shots from downtown, Berg was 31-for-105 from 3-point range in conference play and 49-for-169 overall. Berg scored a career high 24 points against UW-Whitewater in January. Berg was an honorable mention pick last season.
Traynor, who played most of the season at point guard, knew only one speed and that was wide open. Traynor averaged 10 points in all games, 10.6 in conference play. She finished the season ranked third in steals with 2.5 per game. Traynor averaged 2.6 assists per game. Traynor scored a career high 27 points against UW-River Falls in February.
After transferring in this year, Minder turned up her game the last half of the season, finishing with a team high 7.3 rebounds and scored 8.9 points.
Rademacher's input was not so much on the stat sheet, but just on the floor. Rademacher played a scrappy defensive game that found her on the floor much of the time. She finished the season with 2.2 steals per game and averaged 6.5 points.

LEHMAN PLACES SECOND, JACOBSON THIRD AT NATIONAL TRACK MEET
WALTHAM, Mass. - UW-Stout's Jason Lehman (Sr, Bruce) placed second and Katie Jacobson (Jr, Eau Claire) was third at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday, March 14 at Brandeis College in Waltham, Mass.
Lehman placed second in the shot put, throwing the shot 54-feet, 6.75-inches. Lehman was the number two seed going into the event and the top seed, Robert Grieco of Massachusetts-Boston, lived up to his seed by recording a throw of 58-5.25. Lehman last year was second in the event with a toss of 53-11.
Jacobson had the best qualifying time coming into the 1500-meter run and recorded the best preliminary time (4:40.59) Friday night, but came away with third in the championships run, clocking a time of 4:40.29. Michelle Franklin of SUNY-Cortland won the event in 4:35.45.
Lehman's second place finish placed Stout in a tie for 17th, while Jacobson's third place put Stout in a tie for 23rd.
The Blue Devil men will begin the outdoor season Saturday, March 21 at the Long Beach, Calif., College Invitational. The women open their outdoor season Saturday, March 28 at the Emory, Ga., College Invitational.

KATIE JACOBSON NAMED MIDWEST REGION TRACK ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
WALTHAM, Mass. - Using the cross country season as a springboard for the 1998 track and field season, UW-Stout's Katie Jacobson (Jr, Eau Claire) was named the 1998 United States Track Coaches Association Midwest Region athlete of the year.
Jacobson received the honor at a banquet Thursday, March 12, preceeding the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships at Brandeis College in Waltham, Mass.
Jacobson was the top seed to the national meet in both the 800-meter run and the 1500-meter run, but opted to run only the 1500-meter because the events are so close together.
Jacobson holds the Stout school records in nearly all of the indoor middle distance events, including the 600-, 800- and 1000-meter runs. Jacobson also holds the school outdoor 800-meter record. Jacobson was named the 1998 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) indoor track athlete of the meet two weeks ago by winning both the 800- and 1500-meter runs in conference record times.
"Katie has made huge strides in the upper middle distances," Blue Devil coach Carlene Hochhalter said. "Katie is very naturally talented, and combining that with a super hard work ethic gives her a wide range of successes."
Hochhalter said Jacobson's sixth place finish at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships last fall helped her realize what she could accomplish on the track.
"It gave her confidence for the track season," Hochhalter said.
Jacobson is now eligible for the national track athlete of the year award.

GENEVA COLLEGE BREAKS STOUT WINNING STREAK
FT. MYERS, Fla. - After seeing a six-game winning streak fall in the opener of a double header with Geneva, Pa, College, the UW-Stout baseball team called on a senior outfielder to earn the split on the Blue Devils final day of competition on their annual spring break trip.
Geneva scored a single run in the top of the eighth to nip Stout 3-2 in the opener, but Stout returned the favor in the second game by scoring two runs in the top of the sxith and two in the top of the seventh to take a 6-4 win.
Leftfielder Troy Gustafson (Sr, Grand View) was called to the mound after the Blue Devils knotted the score at 4-4 in the sixth, and proceeded to shut down Geneva, facing only six batters.
Gustafson got the first two hitters in the sixth to ground out, then forced the third to flyout to center field.
Stout got the win in the top seventh when Brent Blegen (Sr, Spring Valley) hit a double, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Ryan Zelhofer (Fr, Edgerton) reached on an error, allowing Blegen to score. Zelhofer stole second, got to third and scored when Tate Cummins (Jr, Austin, Minn) laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt.

In the opener, Geneva scored two in the first and Stout answered back with a single run in the bottom of the first. Stout scored the tying run in the bottom of the seventh when Cummins reached on an error to bring in Zelhofer, who reached on a double.
An unearned run proved to be the difference in the top of the eighth as Geneva made Stout pay.
The Blue Devils finished the Florida trip 7-5 and 7-7 overall.
