MENOMONIE - UW-Stout's two leading scorers were named to the 1999-2000 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) honorable mention men's basketball team.

Aaron Vachowiak (Jr, Wausau) and Jeremy Leibfried (Sr, Dickeyville) were both named to the team for the first time.

Vachowiak finished the season as the team's leading scorer, finishing with an average of 15.2 points per game. Vachowiak also led the team in rebounding with 6.8 rebounds. He ranked 11th and seventh, respectively, in the conference in all games.

Vachowiak was the team leader in blocked shots with 37 and for the third year, held Stout's best field goal percentage, shooting .602. He ranked second in the league in field goal percentage.

ANDERSON, PETERSON FIRST TEAM, BRESETTE HONORABLE MENTION

MENOMONIE - UW-Stout's three leading scorers were named to the 1999-2000 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women's basketball team.

Heather Peterson (Sr, Altoona) and Stacie Anderson (Jr, Clayton) were named to the first team, while Andrea Bresette (Sr, Ashland) was an honorable mention choice. In addition, Peterson was named to the all-defensive team.

Peterson was the Blue Devils' fire plug all season, leading the team in scoring 10 times and in rebounding nine times, despite missing five games due to injury. Peterson averaged a team-high 13.7 points and pulled down a 5.8 rebounds. She averaged a league-best 3.43 steals per game. She hit 109-of-229 shots from the field and was 15-of-47 from 3-point range. TIME LIMIT TAKES WIN AWAY FROM BLUE DEVILS

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn - A Metrodome-imposed time limit cost UW-Stout a win as the Blue Devils opened the 2000 campaign by losing the opener and tying the second with Bethel College, Tuesday, Feb. 29 at the Metrodome. Bethel took a 5-4 first game win, and Stout appeared to have the second, but had to settle for a 3-3 tie because the game was called due to the time limit in the top of the seventh.

In the second game, Stout built a 3-0 lead behind solid pitching for three innings by starter Zak Arneson (Jr, Barneveld). Arneson was working on a perfect game heading into the fourth, but gave up two walks, a wild pitch, two hits and three earned runs.

Adam Shoberg (So, Minnetonka, Minn) came on in relief in the fifth inning with bases loaded and struck out the side. He pitched flawlessly in the sixth, not allowing a ball out of the infield.

The Blue Devils would have given Shoberg the win in the seventh when Stout's first two batters - Justin Biever (Fr, Milwaukee) and Eddie Young (So, La Crosse) - were hit by a pitch. Following a strikeout, Rich Young (Fr, Woodbury, Minn) walked to load the bases. JW Dachel (So, Bloomer) reached on an infield error, scoring Biever.

O'Connell delivered two runners with a double. JR Dachel (Sr, Bloomer) loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch and Kurt Ploog (Jr, Lakeville, Minn) picked up an RBI after he walked.

The game was called at that time because of a curfew enforced at the Metrodome and reverted back to the sixth inning.

In the first game, Bethel carried a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning, then picked up three runs for a 5-4 win in the first game.

The Royals roughed up starter Scott Meyer (Sr, Austin, Minn) for an unearned run in the second, then got another run in the fourth. After working one out in the sixth, Meyers gave way to relief and the Royals tacked on three more runs before Brian Bee (So, Bloomer) came in to shut down the side inthe sixht and seventh.

Stout got all of their runs in the sixth, starting with a JW Dachel double and a Brad O'Connell (Jr, Elk Mound) single. JR Dachel drove in both with a double. Following a walk and an out, Eddie Young drove in two runs, but that's all the Blue Devils would manage.

Stout is off until they head to Ft. Myers, Fla., for their annual spring break trip, March 12-18.

PIVEC IMPROVES SHOT DISTANCE, FINISHES SECOND AT CONFERENCE

PLATTEVILLE - Seems as if everytime UW-Stout's Sara Pivec (So, Coon Rapids, Minn) picks up the shot put, she breaks the school record. At the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships, Friday, March 3, Pivec did it again and this time increased her chances of qualifying to the NCAA Division III national meet.

Pivec tossed the soft rock 43-feet, 1.50-inches to finish second in the event.
