LATE FREE THROWS PROPEL POINTERS TO WIN OVER STOUT IN FINALE

MENOMONIE - UW-Stevens Point's Dan Denniston hit three free throws with 52.2 second remaining to give the Pointers an 81-79 lead, one they would not relinquish, and the Pointers handed UW-Stout an 84-79 loss in the season finale Saturday, Feb. 28 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Stout (10-15, 4-12) built a 77-74 lead with 2:57 remaining on two free throws by Tim Schulte (Sr, Sun Praire), but the Pointers (17-8, 9-7) took the lead, 78-77, on back-to-back layups by Derek Westrum and Brant Bailey. Schulte gave the Blue Devils the lead back with layup, but then fouled Denniston as he attempted the 3-pointer.

The Blue Devils had a chance for the lead, but Schulte's 3-pointer came up short and Ben Kuepers fouled Kurt Hoerman, who sunk one for an 82-79 lead.. Hoerman added a layup with four seconds remaining for the final score.

Stout's Jeremy Preston (Jr, Madison) led all scorers with 22 points, 13 in the second half. Aaron Vachowiak (Fr, Wausau) pitched in 18 points and Andy Myers (So, Eau Claire) added 10.

Bailey led the Pointers with 19 points. Russ Austin, Westrum, and Westrum each scored 14 points.

BLUE DEVILS GET ROLLED AT RIVER FALLS

RIVER FALLS - This one went from bad to worst as UW-Stout fell and fell hard to UW-River Falls, 90-66, Wednesday, Feb. 25 at River Falls.

The Falcons, celebrating senior night, sent their seniors out in style by building up a 46-28 halftime lead, then coasting to the win.

The free throw line proved the death of Stout (10-14, 4-11) again, even though they shot 89 percent from the line, well above their average. Quantity was the problem and the scales were tipped heavily in River Falls' favor from the line.

Stout shot 8-for-9 from the line, while the Falcons (14-10, 7-8) went 27-for-35 from the stripe, most of that coming in the second half.

Jeremy Preston (Jr, Madison) led Stout with 15 points. Ryan Fiskewold (Jr, Cedar, Minn) finished with 13 and Aaron Vachowiak (Fr, Wausau) had 12.

The Falcons' Chad Meschke led all scorers with 20 points. Pat Ptacek had 15, Chad Coss 13 and Andy Bauschault 12.

STOUT WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM ENDS SEASON ON A LOSING NOTE

STEVENS POINT - In a game that saw a new NCAA Division III mark established for most fouls in a game by both teams, UW-Stevens Point proved to be tops at free throw opportunities and handed the UW-Stout women's basketball team a 77-66 season finale loss at Stevens Point Saturday, Feb. 28.

Stout (16-9, 10-6) committed 33 fouls, while the Pointers (14-11, 9-7) were whistled 32 times for a total of 65, snapping a mark of 64 set in 1992 between Westfield State and Bridgewater.

The Pointers connected on 37-of-49 attempts, while Stout hit 30-of-46.

Stevens Point held a 31-30 halftime lead, but the Pointers pulled away on the strength of Jessica Ott's 15 second half points. Ott finished with a game high 29 points and hit 16-of-18 free throws for the game.

Stout was led by Charysse Minder (So, Ellsworth) with 15 points and Shannon Berg (Jr, Ellsworth) finished with 10. The Pointers' Christina Bergman had 12 points and Kari Groshek had 10.

Stout did not receive an NCAA Division III playoff bid.

RACHEL TRAYNOR SCORES CAREER HIGH TO LEAD STOUT TO WIN

MENOMONIE - Rachel Traynor (Jr, Ellsworth) scored a career-high 27 points and Shannon Berg (Jr, Ellsworth) chipped in 23 points as UW-Stout downed UW-River Falls, 93-78, Wednesday, Feb. 25 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Traynor went 7-for-16 from the floor, 4-for-10 from 3-point range and was a perfect 9-for-9 at the line for the game. Traynor got 15 points in the second half as the Blue Devils (16-8, 10-5) had to hold off a River Falls (14-10, 8-7) surge.

With as much as a 31 point lead with seven minutes remaining, the Falcons chipped away at the Blue Devil lead by using a glove tight full-court press.

Berg scored 15 of her points in the first half as Stout ran off to a 49-30 halftime lead.

DeeAnn Walters (Fr, Bangor) came off the bench to pull down a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Falcons were led by Missy Johnson with 19 points. Becky Schley added 13 points and JoLynn Sieburg 11 points. Stout racked up 63 rebounds to the Falcons' 45. The win clinched a third place conference finish.

JASON LEHMAN CRACKS SHOT PUT RECORD AGAIN

MENOMONIE - The UW-Stout indoor shot put record stood unchallenged for 17 years. Jason Lehman (Sr, Bruce) broke the record twice in a week.

Only a week after setting the mark at 55-feet, 10.50-inches, on his final throw at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships, Friday, Feb. 25, Lehman uncorked a toss of 56-0, far outpacing his competition. The throw is also the top throw in the country, up to this point.

The shot put team came up big for the Blue Devils with Jim Nehring (Fr, Bloomer) placing sixth in the shot put (49-7.75) and Kevin McCulley (Fr, Fond du Lac), who had not placed all season, seventh (47-5.25).

As a team, Stout placed sixth with 71 points in the two-day event. UW-La Crosse won their ninth consecutive title with 224 points, while UW-Stevens Point was a distant second with 157 points.

Freshman Jamie Buchholtz (Bloomer) placed twice, as did seniors Paul Gilles (Plum City) and John Boldt (Hartland).

Buchholtz placed fifth in the pole vault (14-11) and sixth in the triple jump (44-2.75). Gilles snagged a fourth in the 3000-meter run (8:42.06) and fifth in the 5000-meter (15:05.33). Boldt was fourth in the 200-meter dash (22.91) and fifth in the 400 (50.39).

Other place winners for Stout were Ryan Geier (Fr, McFarland) eighth in the 400, Billy Busch (Jr, Dickeyville) third in the 600 (1:22.32), Steve Quackenbush (So, McFarland) fifth in the high jump (6-6.75), Bob Cahow (Fr, New Brighton, Minn) eight in the pole vault (14-5.25) and Corey O'Donnell (Sr, Chippewa Falls) eighth in the 35-lb. weight (50-5.50).

Stout's young penthathlon crew showed some spunk with Aaron Scheffer (Fr, Osseo) fourth with 3218 points and Jesse Hunter (Fr, LaFarge) eighth with 3000 points.

The Stout relay teams both finished third with the 4 X 200-relay clocking a time of 1:32.99 and the 4 X 400 team finishing at 3:23.18.

PLAY BALL!!! IS THE CALL AS STOUT OPENS SEASON AT METRODOME

MENOMONIE - Spring is in the air and, although the outdoor fields are not yet ready, the UW-Stout baseball team takes to the field Tuesday, March 3 as the open the 1998 season by playing Midland Lutheran of Fremont, Neb. at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome with the doubleheader slated to begin at 12:30 p.m.

The Blue Devils are coming off their best season since the early 1990s and will continue to move away from the long ball hitting teams of the past to the more speedy, dig-out-those-runs-anyway-you-can offense.

Stout is expected to give Brett Blair (Jr, Woodbury, Minn) the start in the opener and Jesse Miller (Jr, Forestville) is expected to start the second game.

Midland Lutheran is coming off their best season ever, racking up 34 wins last season. The Warriors, an NAIA team, established 27 individual and team records last season.

The Blue Devils travel to Ft. Myers, Fla., March 8-14 to play 10 games on their annual spring break trip.
