TITANS BUILD UP FIRST HALF LEAD, HOLD OFF BLUE DEVILS
OSHKOSH - UW-Oshkosh utilized two players in the first half to build up a 42-33 halftime lead, then leaned on a UW-Stout nemesis in the second half to down the Blue Devils, 91-79, Saturday, Feb. 22 at Oshkosh.
Brad Clark and Keith Meyer combined for 21 first half Titan points and Joe Imhoff launched 17 points in the second half to make the difference. The Titans (20-3, 11-3) did not score from the floor in the final four minutes, but did go 8-for-10 in a parade to the free throw line during that stretch.
Jeremy Leibfried (So, Dickeyville) and Ryan Fiskewold (Jr, Cedar, Minn) led the Blue Devils (10-13, 4-10) with 16 points apiece. Andy Myers (So, Eau Claire) chipped in 14 points and Ben Kuepers (So, Dickeyville) finished with 12 points.
Erich Kissel (Fr, Plover) made his first career start and responded with seven rebounds, eight points and two blocked shots. Aaron Vachowiak (Fr, Wausau) came off the bench to pull down seven caroms.
Imhoff led all scorers with 23 points, while Clark finished with 15 and Meyer 14. Imhoff scored 25 points in the teams' first meeting this season.
Stout finishes up their season this week when they travel to UW-River Falls Wednesday, Feb. 25 and host UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m.

DESPITE SHUTTING DOWN TITANS, BLUE DEVILS FALL
MENOMONIE - UW-Stout did not allow UW-Oshkosh a basket from the floor in the final eight minutes, 27 seconds. Unfortunately for the Blue Devils, the Titans scored their final 14 points from the free throw line and went on to down the Blue Devils, 74-64, Saturday, Feb. 21 at Johnson Fieldhouse.
The Titans shot only 14-of-23 in that final stretch - not a pretty percentage - but quantity counted this time around as Oshkosh, who Wednesday clinched the league title, stayed perfect in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).
For the Blue Devils (15-8, 9-5), it was their third loss in four outings and may have dashed any hopes Stout had for advancing to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Turnovers played an important part in the first half, as Stout turned the ball over 11 times to five times for the Titans. Oshkosh (22-1, 14-0) held a 43-36 halftime lead.
The Titans stretched the lead to as much as 18 points in the second half, but Stout cut the deficit to the final 10 points with their best defensive pressure of the afternoon.
The Blue Devils' Rachel Traynor (Jr, Ellsworth) led all scorers with 19 points. Charysse Minder (So, Ellsworth) added 13 and Staci Rademacher (Sr, Sun Prairie) chipped in 10 points. DeeAnn Walters (Fr, Bangor) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
For the Titans' Holly Spoo and Rachel Lachecki shared scoring honors with 15 points. Stephanie Warnke pitched in 11 points.
Stout concludes their home schedule Wednesday, Feb. 25 when they host UW-River Falls at 7 p.m. The Blue Devils conclude the regular season Saturday, Feb. 28 by traveling to UW-Stevens Point.

BLUE DEVILS TRIPPED UP BY NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE
ROSEVILLE, Minn - Charysse Minder (So, Ellsworth) had a field day. Unfortunately, none of her teammates did as the UW-Stout women's basketball team fell, 76-64, to Northwestern College, Tuesday, Feb. 17 in Roseville, Minn.
Minder scored 18 points and pulled down a career best 21 rebounds as the Blue Devils fell to 15-7 overall. Minder did suffer during the game where the entire team did, and that was at the free throw line, where she missed all seven opportunities. Stout finished 7-of-23 at the line (30 percent), while Eagles hit 22-of-35.
The Blue Devils led 27-25 at halftime, but the Eagles pulled away in the second half.
Northwestern had two players, Shereen Kramer and Amber Munger, match Minder's point total. Laurie Toews added 12 points and Kari Sternitzky chipped in 10 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.
Stout got nine points from Shannon Berg (Jr, Ellsworth) and eight points from Rachel Traynor (Jr, Ellsworth).

SECOND PERIOD RIVER FALLS FLURRY ENDS STOUT'S SEASON
RIVER FALLS - An upset was in the making as the UW-Stout hockey team took a 2-0 lead into the locker room after one period, but UW-River Falls exploded onto the ice in the second period with four goals and went on to a 7-3 win over the Blue Devils Saturday, Feb. 21 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) playoffs at River Falls.
Stout's Josh Marklevitz (Fr, Red Wing, Minn) got the Blue Devils started only one minute, forty seconds into the game and Mark Corbett (Jr, New Hope, Minn) added another for Stout (7-19-1) at the 9:38 mark.
But the Falcons (21-5-1) wasted little time in the second period, scoring 59 seconds into the stanza, then rattling off a goal every two minutes. The Blue Devils managed to tighten the score, 4-3, at the 9:43 mark when Corbett scored his second goal of the period. Luke Murray (So, Bloomington, Minn) assisted on both of Corbett's goals.
The Falcons put the game away and ended Stout's season with three additional goals in the third period, including two empty net goals late in the game.
The Blue Devils outshot the Falcons, 27-22.

RIVER FALLS DUMPS BLUE DEVILS IN OPENING PLAYOFF GAME
RIVER FALLS- For a minute, and just a minute, it looked like the UW-Stout hockey team was going to throw a scare into UW-River Falls.
But only one minute, 25 seconds after Stout's Kevin Aube (Fr, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich) scored the opening goal of the game only 1:18 into the game, the Falcons launched a three-goal, first period assault and cruised on to a 5-3 win in the opening game of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Friday, Feb. 20 at Hunt Arena.
Stout came to life in the second period when Matt Romaniski (Fr, Cottage Grove, Minn) scored at 14:11 with an assist from Aube, to pull Stout to 3-2.
The Falcons took the win with two goals in the third period.
The Blue Devils still weren't done. Luke Murray (So, Bloomington, Minn) added a goal with eight minutes remaining for what would prove to be the final score.
Stout outshot the Falcons, 28-24, for the first time in five meetings this season, but River Falls goalie Brady Alstead turned away 25 shots.
In terms of penalties, the game was near flawless with only six penalties, but Stout paid for their infractions as River Falls scored two power play goals.
The two teams meet again Saturday. If Stout would win, the teams will play a 15 minute mini-game a few minutes following the first game.

JASON LEHMAN CRUSHES SCHOOL RECORDS
STEVENS POINT - Jason Lehman (Sr, Bruce) was a dormant volcano ready to explode.
And the UW-Stout shot put All-American exploded Saturday, Feb. 21 when he tossed the shot put for a school record and also notched the best distance in the country as the Blue Devils competed at the UW-Stevens Point Invitational.
Lehman demolished Mark Overgard's 1981 indoor shot put record of 54-feet, 6-inches when he threw the weight 55-10.25, more than a foot further than anyone in NCAA Division III had tossed the shot this year. Lehman had reached the NCAA qualifying distance last week, but this week's toss exceeded that by more than two feet.
Lehman, who was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) field athlete of the week last week, will be busy at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Indoor Championships because on Saturday he also met the automatic qualifying distance in the 35-lb. weight in a school record distance of 52-4, breaking Pete Lau's 1997 school record by more than a foot.
Most likely joining Lehman at the national meet will be the 4 X 400-meter relay team of John Boldt (Sr, Hartland), Ryan Geier (Fr, McFarland), Billy Busch (Jr, Dickeyville) and Chris Valois (Sr, Anoka, Minn), who finished third in a time of 3:20.83. The time is just short of the automatic qualifying time, but should hold as a high provisional qualifying time.
Jeff Jenson (Sr, Menomonie) finished third in the 1000-meter run in a time of 2:37.11. As a team, Stout placed fifth with 51 points in the 10-team meet.
Stout plays host to the WIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships Feb. 27-28. The men's portion of the schedule gets underway at 4:30 p.m. Friday and 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

WIAC CONFERENCE INDOOR TRACK MEET
February 23, 1997
UW-STOUT TO HOST MEN'S & WOMEN'S CONFERENCE TRACK MEETS
MENOMONIE - UW-Stout will play host to the first ever combined Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athetic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships, Friday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, Feb. 28.
Some of the top track and field athletes in the NCAA Division III will descend upon Johnson Fieldhouse's multi-purpose room for the two-day event. Previous to this year, the men's and women's indoor conference championships had been held on the same day, but at different sites.
UW-La Crosse is the only school to have won the indoor conference championships during the 1990s and will be seeking their ninth consecutive crown. The Eagles have won the event 18 of the last 19 years, with only UW-Oshkosh breaking that string in 1989. La Crosse is also the NCAA Division III defending indoor champion.
UW-Stevens Point would seem to have the strongest claim to sneak past the Eagles, returning four conference champions.
On the women's side, only La Crosse and Oshkosh have each carried home the trophy since 1985. The Eagles took the crown from Oshkosh last year. Since 1990, Oshkosh has won six titles, while the Eagles have won it twice.
The women's portion of the meet will get started at 11:30 a.m. both days, while the men's portion of the meet will begin at 4:30 p.m. Friday and and at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
Single day admission will be $3 for adults, $2 for 12 to 18-year-old and children under 12-years-old are free. Two day tickets can be obtained for $5 for adults and $3 for 12-18 year olds.
Schedule of events, heat sheets, team rosters and updated results will be available on the World Wide Web. To access the pages, go to the UW-Stout men's and women's track and field home pages.
