WARHAWKS DEFEAT BLUE DEVILS FROM DOWNTOWN

MENOMONIE - It wasn't raining pennies from heaven, but rather 3-point shots, and most of them came from UW-Whitewater as the UW-Stout men's basketball team was downed, 92-65, by a barrage of 3-pointers Saturday, Feb. 14 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

The Warhawks, led by Graham Diemer, hit 13-of-22 long-range bombs. Diemer did most of the damage, including hitting three straight treys to finish off the first half and give the Warhawks (13-8, 6-6) a 42-32 halftime lead. Diemer finished the night with a game-high 24 points and connected on 6-of-8 long distance launches.

Stout (10-12, 4-9) sent off some rockets as well, but didn't connect with near as many, making 7-of-17.

Stout was led by Jeremy Preston (Jr, Madison), who scored 14 points. Jeremy Leibfried (So, Dickeyville) and Pat Von Feldt (Fr, Plover) eached scored 10 points.

Whitewater's James Stewart, the league's leading scorer, finished with 19 points.

Stout returns to action Saturday, Feb. 21 when they travel to UW-Oshkosh for a 7 p.m. start

BLUE DEVILS DIG A HOLE AT HALFTIME, FALL TO SUPERIOR

SUPERIOR - The UW-Stout men's basketball team dug too deep a hole before halftime, but almost made it out before falling, 71-61, to UW-Superior Wednesday, Feb. 11 at Superior.

The Blue Devils found themselves down 37-30 at halftime, then fell behind by as much as 13 points before clawing to within striking range.

Jeremy Preston (Jr, Madison) connected on back-to-back 3-pointers with four minutes remaining to pull Stout to within three points, 62-59, before the Yellowjackets began a parade to the free throw line.

Superior took a 64-59 lead, but Andy Myers (So, Eau Claire) tightened the score to 64-61 at the 2:22 mark and was fouled, but missed the shot. That would be Stout's final hurrah as Superior made six consecutive free throws and 7-of-8 to close out the game.

Preston led all scorers with 16 points and Myers added 14. The Yellowjackets were led by Jerimy Hallsten with 14, Shane Peterson with 14 and Vince Thomas with 12.

The Blue Devils controlled the boards, 36-25, but 18 of those rebounds came off of Stout's missed shots. The Blue Devils finished the game shooting 40 percent.

BLUE DEVILS HOST ANNUAL ALUMNI GAME

MENOMONIE - For former UW-Stout point guard Zak Alwin, it was just like old times as he scored 21 points to lead his team to a 76-48 win in the Blue Devils' annual alumni game.

Alwin, a former all-conference pick who now lives in Stevens Point, canned three 3-pointers, connected on four more shots from the floor and added four free throws.

Chuck Schaaf, Jr., added 17 points for Alwin's team. Greg Fisher scored six points and Ted Huppert scored 10. For the Blue team, Gary Luecke scored 10 points and Greg Kosciuk chipped in five. The teams were coached by former team managers Pat Grady and Mike McAndrews.

BLUE DEVILS GET BACK ON THE WINNING TRACK

WHITEWATER - After an abysmal performance - and a loss - against UW-Superior the last time out, the UW-Stout women's basketball team got back on the winning track by downing upstart UW-Whitewater, 73-58, Saturday, Feb. 14, but not before the Warhawks put another scare into the Blue Devils in the first half.

The Warhawks, who had been surging in league play, took a 22-21 halftime lead, but Stout (15-6, 9-4) exploded for 52 points in the second stanza to pull away.

Shannon Berg (Jr, Ellsworth) led all scorers with 20 points, but got 14 of those in the second half. Berg also had nine rebounds. Kim Hautala (Jr, Crystal Falls, Mich), making her first start of the season, scored 12 points. Staci Rademacher (Sr, Sun Prairie) and DeeAnn Walters (Fr, Bangor) each added 10.

The Warhawks (9-12, 5-7) shut Stout down in the first half, allowing Stout to shoot only 23 percent, but the Blue Devils made up the difference in the second half by shooting 53 percent.

Charysse Minder (So, Ellsworth) kept the Blue Devils in the game in the first half by pulling down seven rebound, five of them defensive, and finished the game with 11 caroms.

The Warhawks got 12 points from Bridget Georgeff and 10 points from Rebecca Garity.

Stout heads into non-conference action Tuesday, Feb. 17 when they travel to Northwestern College in the Twin Cities. The Blue Devils will host UW-Oshkosh Saturday, Feb. 21 at 3 p.m.

YELLOWJACKETS SHOCK BLUE DEVILS

MENOMONIE - It hasn't happened since the 1988-89 season, but it happened Wednesday night as the UW-Stout women's basketball team lost to UW-Superior, 69-65, at Johnson Fieldhouse.

The Blue Devils couldn't buy a basket, shooting 32 percent for the game, and were also outrebounded by the very physical Lady Yellowjackets.

Stout (14-6, 8-4) fell behind, 28-24, at halftime and appeared to be on the way to making up the difference, but could never shake the pesky Yellowjackets, who forced Stout into 22 turnovers.

The Yellowjackets (3-16, 1-11) could also play defense, holding Stout scoreless for the final two minutes, 27 seconds.

With Stout holding a 65-64 lead with 18 seconds remaining, Superior's Mandy Giffen made a twisting shot inside the paint and drew the foul from Bree Mahone (So, Racine). Giffen canned the shot to give Superior a 67-65 lead.

Stout, following a timeout, still had a chance after Stacie Anderson (Fr, Clayton) missed a jumper, but the ball was pulled down by Rachel Traynor (Jr, Ellsworth). Traynor turned the ball over, then fouled Giffen, who made both shots for the final 69-65 score.

The loss snapped an 18-game winning streak over the Yellowjackets, a 12-game home winning streak and more importantly, a three-game winning streak this season.

Giffen hurt Stout all night, both on the scoreboard and on the boards. She, along with Erika Frafjord, scored 17 points and Giffen pulled down 11 rebounds. Giffen also had the Yellowjackets' only two steals. Teresa Carlson added 10 points.

Stout was led by Mahone with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Charysse Minder (So, Ellsworth) finished with 11 points and Kim Hautala (Jr, Crystal Falls, Mich) pulled down 11 rebounds.

AFTER EVEN START, SUPERIOR TAKES IT TO STOUT, 10-3

MENOMONIE - The first period looked promising. It was the second and third period that led to UW-Superior soundly defeating UW-Stout, 10-3, in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) contest Saturday, Feb. 14 at the Dunn County Ice Arena that marked the end of the regular season

The two teams played to an even 3-3 tie after one period and Stout (7-17-1, 4-15-1) took the lead early in the game when Graham Lomen (Jr, Apple Valley, Minn) scored four minutes, 52 seconds into the game.

The Yellowjackets (16-8-1, 14-6-0) came back to take the lead, 2-1, but Stout's Matt Romanski (Fr, Cottage Grove, Minn) tied the score on a power play goal with an assist from Greg Foster (Jr, Roseau, Minn). Superior took the lead when Jeff Glowa scored.

Stout's Kevin Aube (Fr, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich) scored with 19 second remaining in the period to tie the score in what would prove to be the Blue Devils' last goal of the game.

After nearly 10 minutes of scoreless play, the floodgates opened on the Blue Devils' goal, as Stout allowed seven unanswered goals.

The Yellowjackets outshot Stout 57-32 with Blue Devil goalie Todd Sether (Jr, International Falls, Minn) turning back 47 shots.

Superior's Brian Grycan scored three goals and Craig Boyd added two.

The Blue Devils will play UW-River Falls next weekend, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20-21 at 7:05 p.m. in Hunt Arena in the first round of the NCHA playoffs. The series will be a best of three games, with a mini-game scheduled Saturday, after the 7:05 start, if needed.

GOALS RAIN DOWN IN PAIRS AS SUPERIOR DOWNS STOUT, 9-2

MENOMONIE - Goals rained down in pairs as UW-Superior took advantage of several UW-Stout defensive lapses to down the Blue Devils, 9-2, Friday, Feb. 13 at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

After getting a solo goal four minutes into the game, the Yellowjackets scored two goals within 46 seconds late in the first period. But Stout did answer back 22 seconds later when Tom Schaffner (Jr, Janesville) caught in his glove a shot by Shane Maher (Fr, Forest Lake, Minn), dropped the puck in front of the net and slapped the shot past the Superior goalie to cut the lead to 3-1.

The Yellowjackets took a 5-1 lead in the second period, scoring twice within a minute at the midway point in the period. Superior exploded for four goals in the third period, bunching two together at 1:31 and 2:16 into the stanza, and then doubling up at the 14:42 and 15:16 marks.

Stout got a consolation goal with 19 seconds remaining when Kevin Aube (Fr, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich) scored on a penalty shot.

The Yellowjackets attacked the net and attacked it hard, outshooting Stout, 43-22.

The Yellowjackets Brian Grycan scored three goals and Craig Boyd had two. Three Superior players recorded three assists.

LEHMAN ASSURES HIMSELF TRIP TO NATIONALS IN SHOT PUT

MENOMONIE - Jason Lehman (Sr, Bruce) easily met the NCAA Division III automatic qualifying distance in the shot put, throwing the weight 53-feet, 5-inches as the UW-Stout men finished fourth at the Warren Bowlus Invitational Friday, Feb. 13 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Lehman's toss surpassed by three feet his nearest competitor and was nine inches more than the automatic qualifying distance. Lehman also placed fifth in the 35-lb. weight (49-3.50).

While the shot put was the Blue Devils' only first, depth played a key role in Stout's fourth place finish.

Finishing second were John Boldt (Sr, Hartland) in the 400 (51.39), Bryan Ott (Fr, Monroe) in the 1000 (2:35.40), and Jeff Jenson (Sr, Menomonie) in the 800 (2:00.74)
