BLUE DEVILS DOWN EAGLES IN OVERTIME; LINE FRIENDLY TO BLUE DEVILS

MENOMONIE - Jeremy Leibfried (So, Dickeyville) hit seven of 10 free throws and added a lay-up to score nine points in the overtime period as UW-Stout edged UW-La Crosse, 92-90, Saturday, Feb. 7 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

The Eagles forced a overtime when they overcame an 11-point deficit with one minute, 10 seconds remaining in regulation with a 3-point barrage. The Eagles' Ryan Eklund canned a trey with 59 seconds remaining and LaCrosse's Paul Manchester followed that up with one free throw to pull the Eagles to 74-68.

Manchester fouled Andy Myers (So, Eau Claire) who nailed the front end of two shots to give Stout (10-10, 4-7) a 75-68 lead. Manchester unleashed a bomb with 36 seconds remaining, then, following a Stout turnover, Jay Daly pulled LaCrosse (8-12, 2-9) to 75-73 with 36 seconds left.

Steve Tracy fouled Stout's Aaron Vachowiak (Fr, Wausau) on the inbound pass, but Vachowiak could manage to hit only the front end for a 76-73 Stout lead.

Manchester sent the game into overtime with a 3-pointer with about five seconds remaining.

While Stout trailed only once in overtime, again on a Manchester long range bomb, the Blue Devils' Leibfried worked the line - getting all of Stout's opportunities at the stripe - to eventually score the win.

Stout seemed to have the game firmly in hand with six minutes left in regulation when Jeremy Preston (Jr, Madison) hit back-to-back 3-pointers to take a 63-55 lead. That would be the final shot Stout would make from the floor until a minute into the overtime period. Stout made 13-of-17 free throws during that time span.

The Eagles' Eklund led all scorers with 30 points - eight in overtime - and Preston closely followed with 29 points. The Eagles got 18 points from Tracy and Manchester scored all 15 of his points after halftime.

Leibfried finished up with 17 points, Vachowiak 15 and Ben Kuepers (So, Dickeyville) 10.

There was no question the Blue Devils took advantage of the free throw line, making 29-of-37 shots at the line, compared to 8-for-9 for La Crosse.

Stout will be at UW-Superior Wednesday, Feb. 11, then return home Saturday, Feb. 14 to host UW-Whitewater at 7 p.m. The annual alumni game is scheduled for 5 p.m.

FREE THROWS DOWN STRETCH TIP EAU CLAIRE OVER STOUT

EAU CLAIRE - Jeremy Preston (Jr, Madison) tied the score at 73-73 with a 3-pointer with 1:23 remaining, but UW-Stout sent UW-Eau Claire to the free throw line too many times and the Blue Devils went down to defeat, 78-75, at Zorn Arena Wednesday, Feb. 4.

The Blugolds made five of six charity shots in the final 46 seconds, while the Blue Devils' Aaron Vachowiak's (Fr, Wausau) jumper with two seconds left was Stout's only score. On the game, Eau Claire hit 24-of-29 free throws while Stout was 9-of-15.

WIth the game tied 30-30 at halftime, the Blue Devils moved out to as much as a seven point lead with 5:23 remaining before the Blugolds cut away to the lead on a jumper by Jon Wallenfelsz, two free throws by Jim Anderson and a tip-in by Wallenfelsz.

Eau Claire's Andy Fisher led all scorers with 24 points, going 6-of-8 from 3-point range. Wallenfelsz finished with 19 points and Dave Mellenthin 13.

Preston pumped in 23 points to lead Stout, which had five players in double digits, including Jeremy Leibfried (So, Dickeyville) with 13, Vachowiak with 12, Andy Myers (So, Eau Claire) with 11 and Ben Kuepers (So, Dickeyville) with 10.

BLUE DEVILS GET THE JOB DONE, BUT IT WASN'T PRETTY

MENOMONIE - Coming off an emotional win over UW-Eau Claire Wednesday, the UW-Stout Blue Devils (14-5, 8-3) had a hard time putting the ball into the bucket, but did manage to come away with a 69-57 win over UW-La Crosse, Saturday, Feb. 7 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Turnovers rivalled baskets made as the two teams combined for 61 turnovers, with the Eagles (6-14, 2-9) losing 34 and Stout 27. The Blue Devils shot 37 percent, while La Crosse shot only 25 percent.

Stout's DeeAnn Walters (Fr, Bangor) came off the bench to lead all scorers with 14 points. Bree Mahone (So, Racine) scored 13 points and Staci Rademacher (Sr, Sun Prairie) added 12 points. Both pulled down nine rebounds and Mahone recorded five blocked shots, a new single game record.

The Blue Devils, after trailing by five points midway through the first half, led 25-22 at halftime.

La Crosse had four players in double digits. Sonja Stancevic had 12 points, Kay Galuska and Becky Bohringer each and 11 points and Tammie Lukes finished with 10 points.

The Blue Devils will return to Johnson Fieldhouse Wednesday, Feb. 11 when they host UW-Superior. The Blue Devils will attempt to win their 12th consecutive home game and their 19th consecutive win over the Yellowjackets.

STACIE ANDERSON HITS WINNING SHOT TO DOWN EAU CLAIRE

MENOMONIE - Stacie Anderson (Fr, Clayton) made the most of her first collegiate start.

Playing in front of a packed Johnson Fieldhouse, Anderson pulled up and nailed a 12-foot jumper with 5.9 seconds remaining to give UW-Stout a 73-72 action packed win over arch-rival UW-Eau Claire, Wednesday, Feb. 4.

After watching an 11-point early second half lead evaporate, the Blue Devils (13-5, 7-3) had to scratch to come from behind for the win.

Holding a 41-36 halftime lead, the Blugolds (17-2, 8-2) took advantage of several Stout turnovers to take a 68-67 lead at 5:19 when Allison Berg hit a jumper. Tanya Bauer followed up with two free throws, but then Bauer sent Stout's Staci Rademacher (Sr, Sun Prairie) to the line, where she nailed both shots to tighten the score to 70-69 at 3:22.

Berg connected again for what would prove to be Eau Claire's final score of the night at 2:59 and a 72-69 lead.

After several changes of possessions, Stout finally worked the ball into Bree Mahone (So, Racine), who canned the shot in the paint to pull to within 72-71 at 1:06.

Three consecutive timeouts followed before Anderson got her winning shot.

Allison Berg led all scorers with 24 points, but got 17 in the first half. Bauer finished with 13 points as did Kelly Felmlee.

Stout was led by Shannon Berg (Jr, Ellsworth) with 14 points, including 4-for-6 from 3-point range. Charysse Minder (So, Ellsworth) had 13 points and nine rebounds. Mahone finished with nine points and 11 rebounds. Andrea Bresette (So, Ashland) came off the bench to pull down five rebounds, several of them at key times.

Anderson finished with six points, but she also picked Eau Claire's pocket four times.

The Blugolds harassed Stout into 30 turnovers, but Stout outrebounded the Blugolds, 42-33. The win was Stout's 11th consecutive win at home.

The Blue Devils (7-14-1, 3-13-1) drew first blood in the contest when Graham Lomen (Jr, Apple Valley, Minn) pushed the puck in the goal with 5:34 off the clock in the first period. Lomen was assisted by Dave Stewart (Sr, Hoyt Lake, Minn) and Luke Murray (So, Bloomington, Minn).

BLUE DEVILS EXPLODE IN FINAL MINUTES TO FORGE TIE

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - After managing only one goal in the first 57 minutes of the game, the UW-Stout hockey team exploded for two goals in the final three minutes of regulation to record a 3-3 tie at Lake Forest College Friday, Feb. 6.

Down 3-1, Shane Maher (Fr, Forest Lake, Minn) took a pass from Kevin Morrissey (Jr, Burnsville, Minn) and Matt Romaniski (Fr, Cottage Grove, Minn) and slashed it passed the Lake Forest goalie with 2:32 remaining in regulation.

The Blue Devils knotted the score when Dave Stewart (Sr, Hoyt Lake, Minn) received assists from Mark Corbett (Jr, New Hope, Minn) and Barrett Olson (Jr, International Falls, Minn) with 13 seconds remaining in the period to force the five minute overtime.

Both teams could manage only one shot on goal during the extra time.

Lake Forest got on the board first, getting a power play goal only three minutes into the game.

Stout answered back with 29 seconds remaining in the first period when Morrissey scored unassisted.

The Foresters scored their second power play goal of the evening in the middle of the second period, then pulled out to the 3-1 lead at the 14:03 mark in the third period before Stout began their game-tieing attack.

JACOBSON BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD IN 800-METER

STEVENS POINT - UW-Stout's Katie Jacobson (Jr, Eau Claire) is at it again.

Jacobson easily won the 800-meter run at the Eastbay Invitational in Stevens Point Saturday, Feb. 7, in a school record time of 2:15.80. Jacobson shattered the time of 2:17.95 she set last year and finished almost four seconds in front of her nearest competitor in the 14-team meet. Earlier in the season, Jacobson broke her own record in the 1000-meter.

Jacobson also earned a trip to the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boston, Mass., next month by meeting the automatic qualifying time.

Katy Olsen (Jr, Rice Lake) cruised to an easy first place in the 5000-meter, coming in at 18:14.68, more than 25 seconds in front of the second place finisher.

As a team, the Blue Devils finished tied for eight with 31 points. The University of Minnesota-Duluth took the team title.

If you were named Kate - or Katie, or Katy - and you ran for Stout, you had a good chance of placing in the meet.

Kate Roedl (Sr, Beaver Dam) finished fifth in the 600 (1:49.67) and Katie Kuffel (Fr, Minneapolis, Minn) was sixth in the 1000 (3:15.35). Only Michelle Abramczak (Fr, Stanley) broke through the Katy barrier, finishing sixth in the 200-hurdles (31.55). Abramczak was a member of the otherwise all-Katy 4X400-relay team of Roedl, Kuffel and Jacobson that placed sixth (4:21.08).
