The Pioneers did nothing to hurt that claim as they put the hurt on the Blue Devils with a 90-53 win at Johnson Fieldhouse Saturday, Jan. 31. The PIoneers also showed they could score, running up to a 45-27 halftime lead and they also controlled the boards, taking a 32-21 bulge off the glass. Stout's only lead of the game came a minute into the game when Jeremy Preston (Jr, Madison) nailed a 3-pointer to give Stout a 3-2 shortlived lead. The Blue Devils (9-9, 3-6) also had trouble with the Pioneer's full-court press, turning the ball over 20 times to eight for Platteville. Platteville (17-0, 9-0), ranked second nationally in several polls, had four players in double digits, with Travis Schreiber leading all scorers with 18 rebounds. Merrill Brunson came off the bench for 15 points and Ryan Fuhrmann and Andre Dalton added 12 points. Preston led Stout with 14 points. Andy Myers (So, Eau Claire) finished with 11 points. Platteville held a huge advantage at the free throw line, sinking 19-of-27 attempts, while Stout made 2-fo-6 from the line. Erich Kissel (Fr, Stevens Point) played perhaps his best game of the season, playing 17 minutes off the bench, scoring two points, pulling down four rebounds, dishing off an assist and recording two blocked shots. The Blue Devils will be at UW-Eau Claire Wednesday, Feb. 4 for a 7 p.m. game, and return home Saturday, Feb. 7 to host UW-La Crosse at 8 p.m. January 28, 1998UW-STOUT TIPS UW-RIVER FALLS AT THE VERY ENDMENOMONIE - With the outcome of the game in doubt, UW-Stout was holding a 62-59 lead, but UW-River Falls had the ball with about 12 seconds remaining and the Falcons were driving. Stout's Aaron Vachowiak (Fr, Wausau) tipped a River Falls pass in the lane to teammate Jeremy Preston (Jr, Madison), who scooped the ball over to Andy Myers (So, Eau Claire). Myers, who played for the Falcons last season before transferring to Stout, was fouled by Jason Beeler. Myers went to the line where he sank both free throws to give the Blue Devils a 64-59 win Wednesday, Jan. 28 at Johnson Fieldhouse. The contest between the two longtime foes - this was their 165th meeting - was close the entire way. The Falcons (11-6, 4-4) took a 10 point lead midway through the first half, but the Blue Devils (9-8, 3-5) took the lead with 29 seconds in the half when Preston made a lay-up and Myers connected on the front end of two free throws. The Falcons' Chad Meschke knotted the score at 30-30 at halftime. Stout trailed only a few times in the second half, but never had a lead larger than six points. Following back-to-back 3-pointers by Stout's Jeremy Leibfried (So, Dickeyville) around the 9 minute mark, it looked like Stout would take control, but the Falcons took the lead on a jumper by Meschke at 6:51, then briefly held the lead at 3:20. Stout limited the Falcons to only two points in the final 5:48 of the game. Meschke and Stout's Ben Kuepers (So, Dickeyville) led all scorers with 16 points. Pat Ptacek and Tony Fisher added 12 for the Falcons, while Stout got 14 from Kuepers, 13 from Preston and 10 from Myers. Vachowiak and Beeler battled hard under the boards, with Vachowiak pulling down 10 rebounds and Beeler, nine. Blue Devil Women's BasketballJanuary 31, 1998BENCH GIVES BLUE DEVILS A LIFT OVER PLATTEVILLEPLATTEVILLE - Staci Rademacher (Sr, Sun Prairie) canned a layup and Monica Wittrock (Fr, Colfax) hit a 3-pointer to give UW-Stout a lead midway through the first half they would never relinquish and the Blue Devil went on to a 74-64 win over a pesky UW-Platteville team Saturday, Jan. 31 at Platteville. The Pioneers played the Blue Devils close for much of the first half before Stout began to break the game open a bit, taking an 11 point, 36-25, lead on a Shannon Berg (Jr, Ellsworth) 3-pointer with three minutes left in the half. Stout kept the a double-digit lead for most of the second half, but when Platteville started to slice away at the lead, the Blue Devils' bench, in the persons of Jessie Ustby (Fr, Onalaska) and Jenny Traynor (Fr, Ellsworth) turned the Pioneers back. In a stretch of 90 seconds, Ustby scored seven points, sandwiched around a layup by Traynor for a 63-46 lead with 9:31 remaining. The Pioneers cut the lead to 70-64 with 1:14 remaining in the game, but Stout scored four times at the line and shut down Platteville for the win. Platteville's Jolene Wessel hit a game-high 20 points. Stout's Bree Mahone (So, Racine) led Stout with 13 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots to run her season totals to 26, setting a single season school record. Berg finished with 12 points, Ustby with 11 and Rademacher 10. Andrea Bresette (So, Ashland) came off the bench for seven rebounds. The Blue Devils' bench outplayed the Pioneer bench, tossing in 32 points to Platteville's 16 and pulling down 26 rebounds to Platteville's 15. The Blue Devils play host to UW-Eau Claire Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. and UW-La Crosse Saturday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. January 28, 1998RIVER FALLS UPSETS BLUE DEVILS WITH LAST SECOND SHOTRIVER FALLS - UW-River Falls' Stephanie Olson hit a shot just before the final buzzer to lift the Falcons to a 90-88 upset win over UW-Stout Wednesday, Jan. 28 at River Falls. The Blue Devils (11-5, 5-3) took the lead midway through the second half, building up to as much as a nine-point lead, and did not give it up until the final second of the game. The Falcons (10-7, 4-4) whittled away at the lead, mostly at the free throw line where they connected on 6-of-10 free throws in the final 2:38 of the game. But it was from the floor where the Falcons clinched the win. Olson nailed a 3-pointer with 46 seconds left to cut the Stout lead to 88-85 and, following a free throw, Patty Sell knotted the score 12 seconds later at 88-88. The Blue Devils took two timeouts, worked the ball into their own zone where Rachel Traynor (Jr, Ellsworth) was called for an offensive foul, setting up the Falcons' game winner. Stout did have fractions of a second remaining on the clock and did get a shot away, but it came up just short. Stout, which was ranked fifth in the latest NCAA Division III Central Region poll, recorded 26 steals enroute to forcing 41 River Falls turnovers, but couldn't put the Falcons away. River Falls had five players in double digits, with Missy Johnson leading all scorers with 18 points. Johnson also had 15 rebounds. Stout was led by Shannon Berg (Jr, Ellsworth) with 12 points. Traynor had 11 points and Bree Mahone (So, Racine) had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Blue Devil HockeyJanuary 31, 1998LOMEN GIVES BLUE DEVILS WIN IN CLOSING SECONDS, RECORDS HAT TRICKSUPERIOR - After completely dominating St. Scholastica the night before, the UW-Stout hockey team needed a goal by Graham Lomen (Jr, Apple Valley) in the final 11 seconds to to record the sweep, taking a 5-4 win Saturday, Jan. 31. Friday night, the Blue Devils took an 11-3 win, but Saturday night was a different story when Lomen completed the hat trick after he took a pass from Barrett Cooke (Jr, Marquette, Mich) and Luke Murray (So, Bloomington, Minn) and slashed the puck past the Saints' goalie, James Boots. The Blue Devils (7-14, 3-13) put on another offensive show, getting off 40 shots to the Saints 23. Lomen had a goal in each period, closing out the scoring in the first and getting his second in the middle of the second period to record his first hat trick of the season. Stout's Matt Romaniski (Fr, Cottage Grove, Minn) opened the scoring at 5:39, but the Saints answered right back two minutes later. Scholastica (3-19-1, 1-17) scored in the middle of the second period to pull within 3-2, but Lomen scored only 22 second later. The Saints, playing with only 13 men on their roster, knotted the score at 4-4 with two goals to close out the second period. The Blue Devils needed more than 23 minutes to score the game winner. The 11 goal outburst is the biggest offensive output for Stout since the program resumed varsity status last season. The first 22 minutes of the game forecast the tale of the tape as the Blue Devils jumped out to a 5-1 lead when Barrett Cooke (Jr, Marquette, Mich) scored with one minute, 11 seconds gone in the second period. Stout would score five consecutive goals beginning two minutes later that would carry into the third period. Barrett Olson (Jr, International Falls, Minn) got the Blue Devils (6-14, 2-13) started with a goal at the 8:16 mark in the first period.
