BLUE DEVILS KNOCK OFF WHITEWATER FOR SECOND WIAC WIN

MENOMONIE - UW-Stout built up as much as a 19 point lead early in the second half, then overcame a rocky final nine minutes to pick up their second conference win, a 78-74 decision over UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Jan. 22 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Whitewater (8-9, 3-7) chipped away at the Blue Devil lead through the early part of the second half and Stout (8-10, 2-8) began to turn the ball over - six times in a two-minute, 45-second stretch - as Whitewater pulled to within 58-55.

The Warhawks hurt themselves down the stretch, missing 9-of-13 free throws in the last nine minutes. Whitewater finished a dismal 16-for-37 from the charity stripe.

Stout kept Whitewater at bay, and when they needed to, hit their free throws, connecting on 8-of-12 freebies in the last 1:24 of play.

Aaron Vachowiak (Jr, Wausau) led the Blue Devils with 20 points and nine rebounds. Jeremy Leibfried (Sr, Dickeyville) added 16 points and six assists. Pat Von Feldt (Jr, Stevens Point) tossed in 15 points and Scott Klimek (So, Wausau) came off the bench to contribute 11. Klimek also pulled down eight boards.

The Warhawks' Aubrey Lewis-Byers led all scorers with 23 points, seven points coming in the final three minutes. Ernest Williams contributed 19 points.

The win marked Stout's first over Whitewater since the 1994-95 season.

Stout is off until Saturday, Jan. 29 when the play at UW-Eau Claire.

LA CROSSE TIPS STOUT, 81-80, IN OVERTIME

LA CROSSE - You couldn't ask for a closer game, but unfortunately for UW-Stout, they came out on the short end - the very short end - of an 81-80 overtime thriller at UW-La Crosse, Thursday, Jan. 20.

The game was tied at 35-35 at the end of the first half as Stout (7-10, 1-8) held the lead most of the way, then was tied again at 71-71 at the end of regulation.

The Blue Devils' Pat Von Feldt (Jr, Stevens Point) kept Stout in the game in overtime, scoring seven points in the period, including a shot with four seconds left to give Stout an 80-79. The Eagles (8-9, 3-6) in-bounded and used two passes as Matt Schultz got the ball to a wide-open Nick Madsen under the basket as time ran out.

Von Feldt finished with 14 points, but teammate Aaron Vachowiak (Jr, Wausau) picked up scoring honors with 23 points. Jeremy Leibfried (Sr, Dickeyville) added 18 points and Ben Kuepers (Sr, Dickeyville) had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Eddie Hebert led the Eagles with 19 points. Tom Westhoff and Paul Manchester each contributed 18 points and Madsen ended with 11.

STACIE ANDERSON SCORES 30, BUT STOUT DROPS 79-64 DECISION

WHITEWATER - Stacie Anderson (Jr, Clayton) scored 30 points, but it wouldn't be enough as UW-Stout fell to UW-Whitewater, 79-64, Saturday, Jan. 22 in Whitewater.

Anderson scored 30 or more points for the second straight game. Against UW-La Crosse, Anderson lit up the board for a career-high 32 points. At Whitewater, she was 11-of-21 from the floor, 6-of-10 from 3-point range and 2-of-2 from the line.

But the rest of the Stout offense couldn't get going, with Amy Zelinger (So, Racine) next on the scoring list with nine points.

Stout (11-7, 7-3) trailed, 30-29, at halftime, and Whitewater (11-6, 5-4) would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way. Whitewater made their move midway through the second half, outscoring Stout, 9-2 over two minutes to take a 62-51 lead with 7:50 remaining in the game.

The Warhawks had a decided advantage at the line, hitting 17-of-21 free throws to Stout's 4-of-7.

Whitewater's Vanessa Rieder, who played all 40 minutes, took scoring honors with 31 points. Brenda Brooks had 16 points and two players had 10 points.

Stout hosts conference leader UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m.

STOUT'S STACIE ANDERSON ON FIRE ON COLD NIGHT, SCORES 32 POINTS

MENOMONIE - As cold as it was outside, UW-Stout's Stacie Anderson (Jr, Clayton) was hot on the court scoring a career-high 32 points to lead the Blue Devils to a 95-59 conference decision over UW-La Crosse, Thursday, Jan. 20 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Anderson lit up the board, hitting 8-of-13 3-pointers, scoring 14 points in the first half, 18 in the second.

But in the first half, it looked like the Blue Devils (11-6, 7-2) were going to need all the points Anderson could give them. Stout rushed out to a 17-0 start over the first six minutes, but the Eagles (2-14, 0-9) roared back, getting as close as 36-30 with two minutes left in the first stanza, and trailed 41-32 at halftime.

After what had to be a convincing halftime talk, Stout acknowledged the upcoming lunar eclipse by eclipsing the Eagles, going off on a 20-5 run to open the half.

It would only get worse for the Eagles as Stout forced a total of 34 turnovers for the game and built up as much as a 39 point lead.

Anderson was 11-for-20 from the field and added two free throws to far and above lead all scorers. Aslynn Johnson (Jr, Clinton) added 12 points and Amy Zelinger (So, Racine) tossed in 10 points. Alisha Erickson had 11 for La Crosse.

ANDREA BRESETTE RECEIVES HONORS FOR BIG WEEK

MENOMONIE - UW-Stout's Andrea Bresette (Sr, Ashland) was named to the D3hoops.com team of the week and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) player of the week for her performances in three Blue Devil victories for the week of Jan. 10-16.

Bresette scored a near school record 38 points and pulled down 14 rebounds in Stout's 98-84 win at Superior, Jan. 15. Bresette was 11-of-18 from the floor, 2-for-4 from 3-point range and 14-of-17 from the free throw line. The 38 points was one point short of the school record set by Cindy Hovet in 1994. The 14 free throws made and the 17 free throws attempted was a new school record.

Bresette scored 18 points and six rebounds against Stevens Point Jan. 15, and had four points and eight rebounds against Platteville, Jan. 10.

On the week, she averaged 19.7 points (59 pts), 9.3 rebounds (13 off, 15 def, 28 total), shot 19-of-37 (.514) from the floor, 4-of-7 (.571) from 3-point range, and 17-of-20 (.850) from the line. Bresette had four assists, three blocked shots and two steals.

During the week, Stout defeated UW-Platteville, 80-57, UW-Stevens Point, 80-56, and UW-Superior, 98-84.

D3hoops.com is a national on-line publication that specializes in NCAA Division III level basketball. The popular web site was featured in the Jan. 17 edition of Sports Illustrated.

Named to the same team as Bresette were: Rose Scott, Bethany, W. Va., College; Jill VanGuilder, Shenandoah, Va., University; Emily Tonn, Simpson, Iowa, College, and Brandy Trice, Wentworth Tech, Mass.

LAKE FOREST LEAVES STOUT LOOKING

LAKE FOREST, Ill - Lake Forest scored four goals in the second period and went on to down UW-Stout, 9-1, in an Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) contest Saturday, Jan. 22 in Lake Forest, Ill.

The Foresters (12-6-4, 4-4-0) scored a single goal midway through the first period, then racked up the four goals in the second period. Stout actually outshot Lake Forest in the second, but couldn't get anything past the pipes.

Stout (5-13-1, 1-6-1) got on the board in the third period on the power play when RJ Schriefer (Sr, Cottage Grove, Minn) got assists from Shane Maher (Jr, Forest Lake, Minn) and Drew Nichols (So, Victoria, Minn) only 40 seconds into the stanza.

But the Foresters answered back with another four-goal flurry.

Stout goalie Justin Wiskie (Fr, Janesville) recorded 40 saves on the night that saw Lake Forest outshoot Stout, 49-29.

Stout will host Lake Forest, Friday, Jan. 28 and St. Norbert, Saturday, Jan. 29 at the Dunn County Ice Arena. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m.

ST. NORBERT OVERPOWERS UW-STOUT, 7-3, ON THE ICE

DE PERE - Something had to give when the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association's (NCHA) top power play team - St. Norbert College - met the NCHA's top penalty kill team - UW-Stout.

That something was Stout, which gave up three power play goals as they fell, 7-3, to the Green Knights, Friday, Jan. 21 in DePere.

The Knights wasted little time getting on the board, racking up a goal 22 seconds into the game. St. Norbert came back four minutes later and, only six seconds into their first power play of the night, St. Norbert (14-3-1, 5-2-0) held a 2-0 lead.

Stout (5-12-1, 1-5-1) answered back two minutes later when Jason Jones (Sr, Plymouth, Minn) took assists from Drew Nichols (So, Victoria, Minn) and Kevin Aube (Jr, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich) to pull Stout to within one goal.

But the Knights took advantage of a 4-on-3 situation with six minutes remaining in the first period to carry a 3-1 lead into the locker room.

St. Norbert picked up a shorthanded goal at the seven minute mark of the second, and Stout got on the board again when Seth Nelson (Fr, Grand Rapids, Minn) scored with 19 seconds left in the period. Andy Anderson (Jr, Burnsville, Minn) and Joshua Marklevits (Jr, Red Wing, Minn) picked up the assists.

St. Norbert put the game on ice in the third period, picking up two goals in the first 10 minutes of play. Stout's Anderson netted an unassisted goal with seven minutes left to play. The Knights got their final power play goal of the night two minutes later.

WEAPPA SWEEPS BLUE DEVILS PAST HAMLINE WITH HAT TRICK-PLUS

MENOMONIE - Brad Weappa (Jr, Brooklyn Center, Minn) nearly doubled his season goals totals as he scored a four goal hat trick to lead UW-Stout to a 5-2 non-conference win over Hamline Unversity, Tuesday, Jan. 18 at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

Weappa started his show in the first period after Stout (5-11-1) fell behind 1-0 when he took a pass from Joe Berry (So, Apple Valley, Minn) and Brent Cronk (Fr, Calgary, Alberta), and back handed the puck past Hamline goalie Brent Urdahl.

Weappa would cause Urdahl to weep all night, notching his second goal in the second period, then getting another six minutes into the third, taking another pass from Berry.

Eric Eggen (So, Hudson) scored three minutes later for the Blue Devils, and only 40 seconds later, Hamline's Brice Parks scored to tighten the score to 4-2.

Weappa got his fourth goal of the night, working with Cullen Flaherty (Fr, Duluth, Minn) and Berry. Weappa had a chance for another goal late in the game against the Pipers (4-9-1) from up close, but hit the pipe. Weappa had five goals heading into the contest.

Berry, who had two goals but no assists on the season, finished with a three assist night. Other assists went to Tony Sikich (Fr, Apple Valley, Minn), Matt Olson (So, Buffalo, Minn), RJ Schriefer (Sr, Cottage Grove, Minn), Seth Nelson (Fr, Grand Rapids, Minn) and Steve Holeczy (Sr, Lincolnshire, Ill).

BLUE DEVIL GYMNASTS HAVE RECORD BREAKING DAY

EAU CLAIRE - If records are made to be broken, then the UW-Stout gymnastics team would have shattered one Saturday, Jan. 22 as they finished fifth at the UW-Eau Claire Gymnastics Invitational.

Katie Hanson (Fr, Duluth, Minn) was seventh on the vault (8.80) and floor exercise (8.95). Hanson placed third in the all-around (35.10).

Hamline University won the meet with a score of 176.775.
