For the week of January 12-18Women's Track & Field Men's Track & Field Back to Athletics Home Page Back Issues Blue Devil Men's BasketballJanuary 17, 1998BLUE DEVILS RUN OUT OF STEAM IN SECOND OVERTIMESTEVENS POINT - UW-Stout's Andy Myers (So, Eau Claire) hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime and the Blue Devils Jeremy Preston (Jr, Madison) hit a 3-pointer with 2.3 seconds remaining in the first overtime to force a second overtime, but the Blue Devils ran out of steam dropping a 99-89 double overtime conference contest to UW-Stevens Point Saturday, Jan. 17 at Stevens Point. The Pointers' Dave Grzesk gave the Pointers the lead 16 seconds into the final frame and the Blue Devils (8-7, 2-4) could never catch up. Stevens Point (12-3, 4-2) held as much as an 11 point lead in the first half, but the Blue Devils cut the deficit to 28-25 at halftime on unanswered baskets by Ben Kuepers (So, Dickeyville) and Preston and two consecutive layups by Eric Dorgan (Fr, Cedarburg). The second half featured 12 tied scores but the Pointers built up a three point lead at the line in the final minute, which Myers erased with his buzzer beater for a 70-70 score. In the first overtime, Stout led only once. Preston tied the score at 1:13 on a dunk, but the Pointers' Brant Bailey answered with a dunk and then canned a free throw with 27 second left before Preston knotted the score at 83-83 before the buzzer. The Pointers' Grzesk scored to open the second overtime and the Blue Devils didn't score for more than a minute. Stout hit only one basket from the floor in the second overtime. Preston led all scorers with 28 points, hitting 10-of-20 from the floor and 6-for-12 from 3-point range. Myers added 16 points, Jeremy Leibfried (So, Dickeyville) 15 points and Kuepers 10. Leibfried had 10 assists. Bailey led the Pointers with 23 points and Dan Denniston had 21. Stout is off until Saturday, Jan. 24 when they begin a three game homestand by hosting UW-Oshkosh at 7 p.m. UW-River Falls invades Menomonie Wednesday, Jan. 28 and league-leading UW-Platteville comes to town Saturday, Jan. 31. All games are at 7 p.m. January 14, 1998PRESTON'S RETURN SPARKS BALANCED SCORING ATTACK FOR STOUT WINMENOMONIE - After playing in only one game over the past five weeks, Jeremy Preston (Jr, Madison) returned to the UW-Stout starting lineup and sparked the Blue Devils to a 79-59 win over UW-Superior Wednesday, Jan. 14 as Stout snapped a four game losing streak. Preston, who had been nursing an injured ankle, led all scorers with 23 points. The Blue Devils had a balanced attack, getting 18 points from Jeremy Leibfried (So, Dickeyville), 15 points from Ben Kuepers (So, Dickeyville) and 11 from Andy Myers (So, Eau Claire), who also missed some games over the past few weeks due to injury. Stout jumped out to a 21-5 lead in the first half, but Superior (7-5, 2-3) roared back to tighten the gap to 36-27 by halftime. Preston scored 12 points in the second half and Leibfried added 11 as the Blue Devils coasted to the 20 point win. The Blue Devils got a big lift at the free throw line, hitting 19-of-27. The Yellowjackets had a rough night at the line, hitting 9-of-18 charity shots. Blue Devil Women's BasketballJanuary 17, 1998BLUE DEVILS HANG ON TO RUN PAST UW-STEVENS POINTMENOMONIE- Andrea Bresette (So, Ashland) came off the bench to spark UW-Stout to a very physical 81-72 win over UW-Stevens Point Saturday, Jan. 17 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Bresette scored 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds as the Blue Devils (10-3, 5-1) went on to their third consective win. The Blue Devils hurt their own case, missing the front end of 11 two-shot foul situations. Stout finished the game hitting 22-of-35 shots from the line. The Blue Devils controlled the boards, pulling down 45 rebounds to Stevens Point's 27. Bree Mahone (So, Racine) again matched a career high, cleaning the glass 12 times, including nine defensive boards. The Pointers (9-6, 4-2) hurt their own cause, making only 13-of-25 charity shots. Mahone scored 13 points for the Blue Devils, as did Rachel Traynor (Jr, Ellsworth). Stacie Anderson (Fr, Clayton) scored 12 points. Stout led 43-28 at halftime and had as much as a 16 point lead in the first half. The Pointers' Jessica Ott led all scorers with 31 points, 21 in the second half, despite going down hard at one point in the second stanza. Christina Bergman added 12 and Kari Groshek had 10. Stout returns to action Wednesday, Jan. 21 when they travel to the Target Center to face Northland College at 3 p.m. Stout will be on the front end of a doubleheader bill with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Tickets, available at the UW-Stout athletic office, are $7 and good for both the Stout/Northland game and the Timberwolves/Boston Celtic game later that evening at 7 p.m. The Blue Devils will travel to UW-Oshkosh Saturday, Jan. 24 for a pivotal conference gaame. January 14, 1998STOUT OVERCOMES FIRST HALF TO DOWN SUPERIORSUPERIOR - The UW-Stout women's basketball team overcame a lackadaisical first half to notch an 81-69 win over UW-Superior Wednesday, Jan. 14 at Gates Fieldhouse in Superior. While Stout trailed only once in the first half, the Blue Devils could never find the lift they needed to pull away from the pesky Yellowjackets (2-9, 0-5), going into the locker room with a 37-33 lead. Charysse Minder (So, Ellsworth) provided the catalyst for the Blue Devils in the second half, scoring 13 of her game-high 22 points in the stanza as Stout shot out to as much as a 20 point lead. Bree Mahone (So, Racine) added 15 points and a Stout career high 12 points and Shannon Berg (Jr, Ellsworth) finished with 14 points. The Blue Devils held a 54-39 lead on the boards. The win was Stout's 18th consecutive win over the Yellowjackets stretching back to the 1988-89 season. Blue Devil HockeyJanuary 17, 1998BLUE DEVILS HAVE LET DOWN IN THIRD PERIODMENOMONIE - It was looking like the UW-Stout hockey team was going to put a damper on Bemidji's State's celebration. The Beavers were looking for longtime head coach Bob Peters' 700th career victory Saturday, Jan. 17. Bemidji held a slim 2-1 lead after the first period and the game was 5-4 after two periods. It wasn't until the third period when the Beavers exploded for three goals and gave Peters' an 8-4 win to hand him the milestone. Stout's Jason Jones (So, Plymouth, Minn) gave Stout (5-12, 1-11) a 1-0 first period lead, but Bemidji came back with two goals late in the period to take the lead into the locker room. Stout's Greg Foster (Jr, Roseau, Minn) knotted the score early in the second period, but Bemidji's Shane Kalbrener scored two goals to give the Beavers (11-5-2, 9-3) the lead again. Dave Stewart (Sr, Hoyt Lake, Minn), playing in his first game of the season, tied the score midway through the second period. R.J. Schreifer (So, Inver Grove Heights, Minn) put Stout ahead on a short handed goal two minutes before the period. But Bemidji's Calvin Chartand tied the score just before the end of the period. The Beavers put Stout away in the third, including two more goals by Kalbrener to close out the scoring. Stout took 11 penalties to Bemidji's six, and the Beavers scored on three power play opportunities. Bemidji outshot Stout, 39-30. Stout returns to the Dunn County Ice Arena next weekend when they host St. Norbert College Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. January 16, 1998THREE-GOAL SECOND PERIOD SPURS BEMIDJI OVER STOUTMENOMONIE - Bemidji State University scored three unanswered second period goals to erase a 2-1 UW-Stout lead, as the Beavers topped the Blue Devils, 5-3, Friday, Jan. 16 at the Dunn County Ice Arena. Stout had taken a 2-1 lead in the first period on back-to-back goals by Matt Romaniski (Fr, Cottage Grove, Minn) and Marcus Soderberg (So, Huddinge, Sweden), only to see the Beavers come roaring back. Romaniski scored his second goal of the evening at the 6:23 mark of the third period to tighten the game to 4-3, but Bemidji put the game on ice with Bruce Matatall's short-handed goal with nine minutes remaining. The Beavers outshot Stout, 34-29. The Blue Devils attacked the net hard in the third, cracking off 11 shots. Kevin Hulsey (Fr, New Richmond) recorded 29 saves on the night. Blue Devil GymnasticsJanuary 19, 1998BLUE DEVILS FLY INTO ACTION THIS WEEKMENOMONIE - The UW-Stout gymnastics team (1-1, 1-1) have had only two meet this season, but will more than double their totals after a very busy upcoming week. Stout will host UW-Eau Claire Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m., then travel to Hamline University Friday, Jan. 23 before heading to UW-Eau Claire Saturday, Jan. 24 for the Eau Claire Invitational at 1 p.m. Men's Indoor Track & FieldJanuary 17, 1998BLUE DEVILS FINISH FOURTH AT OWN MEET; GILLES TAKES 3000MENOMONIE - Paul Gilles (Sr, Plum City) used a final spurt at the end to hold off a challenge to win the 3000-meter run at the Blue Devil Invitational where Gilles' UW-Stout finished fourth in the 10-team meet Saturday, Jan. 17 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Gilles clocked an 8:43.95 to edge UW-La Crosse's Dan Peso with finished in 8:44.27. The Eagles won the mee with 198 points. Stout racked up 84 points. Jesse Hunter (Fr, La Farge) took a second in the 200-hurdles (27.47), as did the 4 X 200-relay team (1:34.46) of Joe Verstegen (Jr, Little Chute), John Boldt (Sr, Hartland), Billy Busch (So, Dickeyville) and Joe Johnson (Fr, Grantsburg). Finishing third was Jason Lehman (Sr, Bruce) in the shot put (49-11), Verstegen in the 200 (23.96), Boldt in the 400 (51.88), Jamie Buchholtz (Fr, Bloomer) in the pole vault (14-10) and Aaron Scheffer (Fr, Humbird) in the 200 hurdles (28.39).
