UW-Stout Blue Devil Athletics for the week of September 1-7thAthletic Academic Honor Roll Blue Devil FootballSeptember 8, 1997BLUE DEVILS TO OPEN FOOTBALL SEASON BY HOSTING BEMIDJIBemidji State Beavers (1-0, 0-0 NSIC) at UW-Stout Blue Devils
(0-0, 0-0 WIAC) Saturday, September 13, 7 p.m. LAST WEEK: Stout: This is the season opener for the Blue Devils who are coming off a 4-6 record in 1996. A revitalized, experienced offensive line should allow Stout the opportunity to both run which was missing last season and pass which definitely was there last season with a number of high flying receivers. The defensive line remains intact from last year, but the linebacking corp has seen some changes, as has the defensive backfield. Stout has not won a season opener since 1993. Bemidji State: The Beavers are coming off an astounding come-from-behind win over highly ranked St. Johns' University, scoring two TDs in the final 2:02 of the game for a 25-21 win at Bemidji. With three minutes to go, defensive back Jim Illiff intercepted a St. John's pass, returning the ball to the Johnnie's 20. Two plays later, quarterback Pat O'Connor connected with receiver Ty Hoaglum for a 17-yard strike to move the score to 21-19 at the 2:02 mark. After a defensive stand, the Beavers forced the Johnnies to punt. St. John's hurt themselves by interfering with the fair catch. O'Connor hit Hoaglum for the game-winning 47-yard score as time ran out. Hoaglum finished the game with three receptions for 70 yards. The Beavers' Chris Meyer led all rushers with 121 yards on 32 carries. Bemidji held the edge offensively, racking up 189 yards rushing and 156 yards passing for a total yardage lead of 345 yards to the Johnnies' 277. LAST YEAR: Stout plays in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and are affiliated with the NCAA Division III. Stout was 4-6 overall, 1-6 in the conference last season and finished seventh. Bemidji plays in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) and is affilitated with NCAA Division II. The Beavers were 2-8 overall last season, 1-5 in the NSIC, good for sixth. THE SERIES: Stout holds a 5-1 lead in the series that began in 1974 with a 20-16 Stout win. Stout has won the last four meetings, including last year when they defeated Bemidji, 28-13, at Bemidji. The Blue Devils used three different methods to score 21 points in the second quarter to take a 21-0 lead into the half. Adam Roach rushed for a 5-yard TD, Tony Aizupura returned a punt for 65 yards and Matt Bunyan hit Mike Bethke for a 9-yard pass score. Stout added another in the third when Ryan Zeman returned an interception 35 yards to paydirt. The Beavers scored their points in the fourth, on a 1-yard Matt Mattson run and a Kyle Christianson to Steve Smuk 2-yard pass. OFFENSIVE LOOK:Bemidji: The Warriors run a multiple-pro set Stout: The Blue Devils utilize a multi-pro set which incorporates a West Coast offense. DEFENSIVE LOOK: Bemidji: 4-3 Stout: 4-3 COACHES: Stout's Ed Meierkort (13-27 career) is in his fifth year, while Bemidji's Jeff Tesch (3-8) is in his second year. STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "We weren't surprised by them (Bemijdi) beating St. John's. We thought maybe they would. We feel we match up pretty well with them. They have one game under their belt, but we feel the home game will have an impact. I just want us to play well, play well for the entire 60 minutes. I want to see us stay on them. We want to get them down, and then we want to shovel dirt on them. We have got to develop that attitude that when we get a team down, we have to bury them. The only way to develop that is to do it. We want to get in and get a W. "This is what we have identified as the formula to win. 1.) We have to win the special teams battle. 2.) We have to win the turnover ratio. 3.) We need to dominate the short yardage game on both sides of the ball. 4.) We must win the goal line possessions. That's our formula to success. We will find a way." Blue Devil VolleyballSeptember 6, 1997STOUT VOLLEYBALL TEAM FOURTH AT AUGSBURG TOURNAMENTMINNEAPOLIS The UW-Stout volleyball team went 2-1 in pool play, but dropped the third place match to St. Benedict to place fourth at the Augsburg College Invitational. The Blue Devils dropped their first match, 17-15, 15-12, 15-4, to highly touted St. Olaf College, Friday. Stacy Stoddard (Jr, St. Paul, Minn.) led the Blue Devils (3-2) with 14 kills, while Tori Feit (So, Worthington, Minn.) added 12. Stout bounced back to take Macalester College in four games, 15-10, 15-8, 9-15, 15-11. Monica Cyrus (Jr, Farmington, Minn.) had 12, while Stoddard and Feit each put down 10. The Blue Devils had little trouble with conference foe, UW-Superior, to open play Saturday with a three-game sweep, 15-7, 15-10, 15-2, and a very balanced attack. Cyrus, Feit, Stoddard and Karen Hatfield (Jr, Menomonie) each had eight kills. Stoddard scored six service aces. Stoddard had 14 kills, and Cyrus and Feit each had 11 kills, as the Blue Devils fell 15-12, 15-9, 11-15, 15-9, to St. Benedict. On the weekend, Stoddard finished with 46 kills, Feit had 41, Cyrus 38 and Hatfield, 23. Stout averaged 10 services aces per match, and setter Jenny Kraczek (Jr, Blaine, Minn.) averaged 10 assists per match. Feit and Cyrus were named to the all-tournament team. The Blue Devils return to action Wednesday, Sept. 10 when they travel to Bethel College for varsity and junior varsity match-ups. Stout will be at the Superior Tournament, Sept. 12-13. September 3, 1997UW-STOUT DOWNS AUGGIES IN THREE STRAIGHT GAMESMENOMONIE The UW-Stout volleyball team had little trouble with Augsburg College in their season opener, downing the Auggies, 15-7, 15-5, 15-6, Wednesday at Johnson Fieldhouse. Jamie Esser (Sr, Highland) led the way for the Blue Devils, knocking down nine kills. Tori Feit (So, Rushmore, Minn.) and Stacy Stoddard (Jr, St. Paul, Minn.) each had seven kills. Stoddard and Kathy Jahnke (Jr, West Allis) each recorded three service aces. The match was also the first for the Auggies, who were led by Angie Rieger and Jessica Ness with six kills apiece. Blue Devil SoccerSeptember 6, 1997BLUE DEVIL SOCCER TEAM WINS SECOND STRAIGHTNEW ULM, Minn. The UW-Stout soccer team allowed Martin Luther College a game opening goal, then scored four straight goals to down MLC, 4-1, Saturday. Alyssa Halverson (Jr, Rochester, Minn.) answered the Crusaders' first goal, taking a pass from Jessica Unterweger (So, Nashotah) to knot the score. Halverson would have a hand in the next two goals, passing to Karen Gray (Jr, Mission Viejo, Calif.) for the Blue Devils's second score to open up the second half. Five minutes later, Halverson passed to Marni Grass (So, Waukesha) who scored from near the sideline. Carrie Kennedy (Fr, Watertown) concluded the scoring after she picked up a shot Becca Carlson (So, Rosemount, Minn.) put off the crossbar. The Blue Devils (2-0) travel to Bethel College Thursday, Sept. 11 in St. Paul, then go the opposite direction for a contest at Lawrence University in Appleton, Saturday, Sept. 13. September 2, 1997RECORDS FALL AS BLUE DEVILS OPEN SOCCER SEASON WITH WINMENOMONIE Scoring records fell or were tied as the UW-Stout soccer team opened the 1997 season with a 5-0 win over Mt. Senario College Tuesday at Phelan Park. The five goals scored is the most ever scored in a single half and in a single game by a Blue Devil team. The game was shortened because Mt. Senario fell below the required number of players when one Senario player was red-carded and another was lost to injury. The Saints arrived with only eight players. Alyssa Halverson (Jr, Rochester, Minn.) opened the game with two straight goals, tying a school record for most goals scored in a game. Becca Carlson (So, Rosemount, Minn.), not to be outdone, also added two goals for the Blue Devils (1-0). Marni Grass (So, Waukesha) put in the other Stout goal. Carlson and Grass also had assists, as did Stacy Langowski (So, Janesville) and Jessica Unterweger (So, Nashotah). The Blue Devils outshot the Saints (0-1) 21-1. The game ended with about 10 minutes left to play. The school with the highest overall GPA is awarded the All-Academic trophy. Stout sponsored seven intercollegiate sports during the 1996-97 academic year. Of the 95 women who competed in at least one Stout athletic contest, 65 earned at least a GPA of 3.0. The overall cumulative GPA for Stout was a conference high 3.17.
