Last Time Out: Stout defeated Marian College, 64-55, Dec. 17 and Viterbo College, 75-62, Dec. 15. River Falls fell in their own Cenex/Land O' Lake Tournament championship game to Mt. Marty, 51-45, Dec.30. The Titans traveled to Duluth, Minn., to down the University of Mary, 91-73, Dec. 29 and St. Scholastica, 81-73, Dec. 30. The Titans defeated Marian, 60-51, Jan. 2. Oshkosh will be at UW-Stevens Point Wednesday, Jan. 6. The Pioneers are coming off a busy week, traveling to Hawaii to lose their first game in 36 contests, dropping a 69-68 decision to NCAA Division II Hawaii-Pacific, Dec. 28. After returning to the states, the Pioneers swept through the Clarke College Tournament over the New Year's holiday, taking Clarke, 79-48, Rockford, 86-63, and Cardinal Stritch, 72-61. The Pioneers will host UW-Eau Claire Wednesday, Jan. 6 and UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 9. Last Time They Met: The Blue Devils and the Falcons split last season, with each winning on their own court. Stout took the Jan. 28, 1998, contest, 64-59, and River Falls won Feb. 25, 90-66. River Falls leads the series, 91-75. The Titans defeated Stout twice last year, 72-63, Jan. 24 in Menomonie, and 91-79, Feb. 21 in Oshkosh. Stout leads the series, 48-38, with the last Stout win coming during the 1994-95 season, when Stout swept the series, 104-102 and 91-87. Platteville defeated Stout 77-52 and 90-53 last season during their undefeated national championship run. The Pioneers hold a 52-35 lead in the series with the last Stout win coming in the final game of the 1991-92 season, a 68-66 squeaker.

January 4, 1999BLUE DEVILS RETURN TO CONFERENCE PLAYMENOMONIE - The UW-Stout men's basketball team returns to action Wednesday, Jan. 6 when they travel to UW-River Falls for a 7 p.m. contest. The Blue Devils then open up a three-game homestand, welcoming in UW-Oshkosh Saturday, Jan. 9, defending national champion UW-Platteville, Monday, Jan. 11 and UW-Stevens Point Wednesday, Jan. 13. All games begin at 7 p.m.
January 4, 1999DEFENSE HELPS STOUT NOTCH WIN OVER NORTHLAND, 67-56ASHLAND - The UW-Stout women's basketball team held Northland College scoreless for about four minutes in the second half and went on to take a 67-56 non-conference win at Ashland, Saturday, Jan. 2. Holding onto a slim 47-44 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the contest, the Blue Devils shut down Northland on 10 straight possessions to jump out to a 52-44 lead. The Lumberjills did rebound and brought the score to 57-53 with two-minutes, 30-seconds remaining, but again the Blue Devil defense clamped down, holding Northland to only three points the rest of the way for the 67-56 final score. Stout (4-7) had to come back the entire first half, with Northland (4-9) jumping out to a 7-0 early lead, then blew that up to 23-14 with four minutes left in the half. The Blue Devils exploded to take a 33-32 halftime lead. Rachel Traynor (Sr, Ellsworth) scored 15 points to lead Stout, which shot 24-of-68 from the floor. Traynor connected on 4-of-6 3-point shots to pave the way. Aslynn Johnson (So, Clinton) added 10 points for the Blue Devils. Northland's Beth Tanula led all scorers with 16 points. Stout returns to conference action Wednesday, Jan. 6 when they host UW-River Falls at 7 p.m.
December 30, 1998WINONA STATE ROLLS OVER BLUE DEVILS, 112-74WINONA, Minn. - Even Shannon Berg's (Sr, Ellsworth) career-high 28 points couldn't bail out UW-Stout as the Blue Devils fell, 112-74, at Winona State, Wednesday, Dec. 30. Berg finished the afternoon by connecting on 7-of-18 field goals, 5-of-12 from 3-point range, and 9-of-10 free throws, but the Blue Devils (3-7) dug a 50-32 halfime hole they could not get out of. Amy Zelinger (Fr, Racine) was the only other Stout player to reach double digits, tallying 15 points from off the bench. The Warriors had four players in double figures, led by Amanda Brown with 26 points. Heather Livingstone scored 19 points, Lesley Miller 18 and Nicole Reisner 10. The Warriors (5-7) hit 52 percent (39-of-75) from the floor and were 25-of-32 from the line. The Blue Devils, by contrast, connected on 23-of-66 field goals (35 percent) and 16-of-29 free throws. The 112 points was a school record for most points scored by a Winona team, and a Blue Devil record for most points scored by an opponent. The previous record was 105 points earlier this season.
December 15, 1998UW-STOUT'S GRAHAM LOMEN NAMED NCHA PLAYER OF THE WEEK MENOMONIE - UW-Stout forward Graham Lomen helped his team to its first points of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) season last weekend and has been named the NCHA Player of the Week. In two games against UW-Eau Claire the 6-0, 240-pound senior from Apple Valley, Minn., had three goals and one assist. He had one power-play goal and had the eventual game-winner in the Blue Devils' 8-3 home win over the Blugolds Saturday, Dec. 12. Lomen scored the first goal of the game in a 2-2 tie with the Blugolds Friday, Dec. 11 at Eau Claire. Lomen is the teams' scoring leader, with 11 goals and eight assists. The Blue Devils are 4-10-1 heading into the Christmas break and have posted a 2-0-1 record over the last three games. Stout returns to action Jan. 8-9 when they travel to Bemidji State for an NCHA weekend series.
