VACHOWIAK POWERS BLUE DEVILS PAST MARIAN COLLEGE

FOND DU LAC - Aaron Vachowiak (Fr, Wausau) scored 21 points to power the UW-Stout men's basketball team to a 68-64 non-conference contest over Marian College, Thursday, Dec. 18, in Fond du Lac.

Vachowiak, a red-shirt freshman, scored 13 points in the second half and, with a lay-up and a free throw, gave the Blue Devils a 60-58 lead at the 5:48 mark, a lead Stout would never relinquish.

Following a basket from Jeremy Leibfried (So, Dickeyville) seconds later, Vachowiak was the only Blue Devil to score from the floor, tipping in a shot with a minute left.

Stout (7-2) went 5-for-8 from the free throw line down the stretch to record the win, their third straight.

Vachowiak, who pulled down seven rebounds, hardly missed all night, hitting 8-of-10 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the line.

Leibfried added 13 points and Eric Dorgan (Fr, Cedarburg) came off the bench to chip in 12 points. Ben Kuepers (So, Dickeyville) and Andy Myers (So, Eau Claire) each recorded 10 rebounds.

Marian (1-9) was led by Mark McHorney with 15 points.

Stout is off until Jan. 2-3 when they compete in the Edgewood College Tournament in Madison. The Blue Devils open the tournament by facing St. Scholastica.

BLUE DEVILS BOUNCE BACK IN SECOND HALF TO DOWN VITERBO

LA CROSSE - The UW-Stout men's basketball team shot 16-of-17 from the free throw line in the second half to overcome a seven point halftime deficit to down Viterbo College, 70-65, Tuesday, Dec. 16 at La Crosse.

Down 46-39 to start the second half, Aaron Vachowiak (Fr, Wausau) hit a layup, added a free throw, then nailed another layup to pull Stout to within two points only one minute into the second half. Eric Dorgan (Fr, Cedarburg) hit both free throws to tie game seconds later.

After Viterbo took a two point lead, Jeremy Leibfried (So, Dickeyville) hit a 3-pointer to give Stout a lead they would surrender only once.

While Viterbo was nailing shots from the floor, the Blue Devils would score only four more baskets from the field the rest of the way, but their free throw shooting was almost flawless, missing only one of 14 freebies the rest of the game. On the game, Stout shot 23-of-28 from the line (82 percent).

Stout's Ben Kuepers (So, Dickeyville) led all scorers with 17 points, hitting a perfect 7-of-7 from the floor, 3-for-4 from the line and hed added eight rebounds.

Vachowiak had his best scoring game as a Blue Devils, scoring 15 points. Leibfried scored 14 points with Andy Myers (So, Eau Claire) tossing in 13 points.

The V-Hawks were led by Chad Helle's 15 points and Mike Brudnos.

The Blue Devils won the battle of the boards, taking a 36-26 advantage. Dorgan came off the bench to pull down eight caroms.
