BLUE DEVILS PICK UP FIRST CONFERENCE WIN

LA CROSSE - Pat Von Feldt (Fr, Plover) hit a 3-pointer with 14:08 on the clock in the first half to give UW-Stout a 13-11 lead and Stout never trailed the rest of the way as the Blue Devils downed UW-La Crosse, 65-52, to pick up their first conference win of the season, Saturday, Dec. 13 at La Crosse.

The Blue Devils (5-2, 1-1) also snapped a two-game losing streak and avenged two conference losses to the Eagles from last season.

Andy Myers (So, Eau Claire)Jeremy Preston (Jr, Madison) was lost for the month due to an ankle injury. Myers finished the night scoring a game-high 18 points.

The Blue Devils, who held a 37-28 halftime lead, got 16 points from Jeremy Leibfried (So, Dickeyville) and 12 points from Von Feldt.

Stout connected on 26-of-54 shots (48 percent) from the field and held the Eagles to 21-of-55 shooting (38 percent). Stout also held a lead on the boards, clearing out 38 rebounds to La Crosse's 30.

La Crosse (4-5, 0-2) got 14 points from Jay Daly and 11 from Ryan Eklund.

Stout will be at Viterbo College, Tuesday, Dec. 16 and at Marian College, Thursday, Dec. 18.

December 9, 1997

SLOW FIRST HALF LEADS TO SECOND STRAIGHT LOSS

ROSEVILLE, Minn. - Hitting only nine of 27 shots from the floor in the first half, the UW-Stout men's basketball team couldn't dig themselves out of a hole and fell, 70-61, to Northwestern College Tuesday, Dec. 9.

The Blue Devils (4-2) found themselves down by as many as 17 points in the first half, but clawed back to a 40-28 point halftime deficit. Stout shot somewhat better in the second half (13-for-32) and outscored the Eagles, 33-30, but it wouldn't be enough.

Andy Myers (So, Eau Claire) led three Blue Devils in double figures with 22 points. Jeremy Leibfried (So, Dickeyville) finished with 14 points while Aaron Vachowiak (Fr, Wausau) came off the bench to score 10 points, block two shots and pull down seven rebounds. Ben Kuepers (So, Dickeyville) had 10 rebounds and two blocked shots.

The Eagles (8-4) had five players in double figures with Tim Aalsma leading the way with 17 points.

December 13, 1997

MAHONE LEADS STOUT TO SEVENTH CONSECUTIVE WIN

LA CROSSE - Bree Mahone (So, Racine) scored 14 points in the first half to keep UW-Stout close to UW-La Crosse, then added 11 points in the second half, including several points down the stretch to give the Blue Devils an 88-74 win and their seventh consecutive win, Saturday, Dec. 13 at La Crosse.

Mahone finished the game with 25 points, seven rebounds, three steals and one blocked shot.

Down 47-46 at halftime, Charysse Minder (So, Ellsworth) tied the scored on a free throw, then the Blue Devils took the lead for good when Rachel Traynor (Jr, Ellsworth) hit a jumper, followed by a layup by Mahone and Stout never looked back.

Stout (7-0, 2-0) got scoring out of all players that stepped onto the court. Traynor, Stacie Anderson (Fr, Clayton), Kim Hautala (Jr, Crystal Falls, Mich) and Andrea Bresette (So, Ashland) all scored eight points.

The Eagles (2-6, 1-1), who never got closer than 10 points after the 11 minute mark, were led by Alisha Erickson with 14 points.

Stout forced 45 La Crosse turnovers, but the Blue Devils turned the ball over 37 times themselves.

Stout is off until Tuesday, Dec. 30 when they play Millikin University, the team that knocked the Blue Devils out of the NCAA Division III playoffs last season, at the Luther College Tournament. Stout will play Luther, Wednesday, Dec. 31.

December 11, 1997

BIG SECOND HALF PROPELS STOUT TO WIN OVER WINONA

MENOMONIE - A 15-2 run early in the second half propelled a lackluster UW-Stout women's basketball team to an easy 97-69 win over NCAA Division II opponent Winona State Thursday, Dec. 11 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

With Stout clinging to a 53-43 lead at the 18:16 minute mark, the Blue Devils (6-0) slowly built their way to a 58-47 lead over the next three minutes. But then Stout's pressure defense forced the Warriors to turn the ball over several time and three straight baskets by Jessie Ustby (Fr, Onalaska), Andrea Bresette (So, Ashland) and drove the scored to 67-47 and it was off to the races for the Blue Devils.

Stout's Bree Mahone (So, Racine) led all scorers with 16 points. Also in double figures for Stout was Ustby with 13, and Staci Rademacher (Sr, Sun Prairie) and Rachel Traynor (Jr, Ellsworth) with 10 apiece.

The Warriors (6-4) were led by Jeanelle Soland with 15 and Raegen Isham with 12.

Stout forced 29 turnovers and recorded 21 steals.

OLSON NOTCHES HAT TRICK TO GIVE STOUT FIRST CONFERENCE WIN

MENOMONIE - Barrett Olson (Jr, International Falls, Minn) demonstrated the form that made him the leading scoring in junior college last season when he scored a hat trick on the way to leading the UW-Stout hockey team to an 8-3 win over UW-Eau Claire Saturday, Dec. 13 at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

Olson scored a goal each period and picked up the eventual game winning goal in the third period in giving the Blue Devils (4-10, 1-9) their first Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) win of the season.

With the score tied at 1-1 in the first, Olson scored his first goal with five minutes remaining in the first period when he took a pass from and Greg Foster (Jr, Roseau, Minn). The Blue Devils jumped all over the Blugolds in the second, with Graham Lomen (Jr, Apple Valley, Minn) notching a goal. The Blugolds' (5-6, 4-6) moved the score to 4-2 when Adam Sklader scored midway through the period.

The Blue Devils took over in the third period as Olson wasted little time, scoring two minutes into the period. All three of Olson's goals were point blank shots a few shots in front of the net.

Foster added a goal eight minutes later. Eau Claire's Kelly Stephens put in a power play goal, but Stout put the game on ice late in the period when R.J. Schreifer (So, Inver Grove Heights, Minn) and Shane Maher (Fr, Forest Lake, Minn) scored with 25 seconds of each other.

The eight Blue Devil goals was Stout's biggest offensive output of the season.

The game was a rough affair, as evidenced by 34 total penalties, a number of fights and five total disqualifications.

Stout will is off of varsity competition until Jan. 6 when they travel to Northfield, Minn., to face St. Olaf College. The junior varsity will play North Dakota State University-Bottineau, Jan. 5 at Spooner. The Blue Devils will play three exhibition games during a Christmas break trip to Sweden.

December 12, 1997

BLUGOLDS HAND STOUT NINTH STRAIGHT CONFERENCE LOSS

EAU CLAIRE - UW-Eau Claire scored two goals midway through the third period to hand Stout a 5-4 loss, the Blue Devils' ninth straight consectutive NCHA loss Friday, Dec. 12 at Hobbs Ice Arena in Eau Claire.

After Stout tied the scored at 3-3 in the second period when Tom Schaffner (Jr, Janesville) scored with two minutes remaining in the stanza with assists from Kevin Aube (Fr, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich) and Johan Sandstrom (Fr, Lulea, Sweden).

The Blue Devils took their only lead of the game early in the third period with Shane Maher (Fr, Forest Lake, Minn) picking up the change from Schaffner for the goal, and a 4-3 lead.

The Blugolds returned the favor at the 10 minute mark, getting a 5-on-4 power play goal by Jake Mersberger. Eau Claire got the game winner with seven minutes remaining when Adam Sklader got assists from the Blugolds' biggest guns, Ryan Thomas and Cam Cook.

The Blugolds started off the game taking a 2-0 lead, but Stout knotted the score with goals by Matt Romaniski (Fr, Cottage Grove, Minn) and Luke Murray (So, Bloomington, Minn). Eau Claire tied the score at 3-all.

LEHMAN EARNS SPECIAL MENTION ALL-AMERICAN SPOT

MENOMONIE- UW-Stout offensive lineman Jason Lehman (Sr, Bruce) was named as an honorable mention pick on the Hewlett-Packard Division III All-American Football team.

Lehman was a two-time all-conference pick and started all four year for the Blue Devils, his freshman and sophomore years on defense, and his final two years in the offensive line.

A pre-season All-America pick, Lehman was a key part in the Blue Devils' high potent passing attack, which finished ranked fourth in the country. The 310-lb. NFL prospect allowed no sacks during the 1997 season and graded out well over 90 percent. Lehman also played a few downs throughout the season on defense and served as the long snapper when the original long snapper went down to injury.

Lehman is also a track and field standout, earning five All-America titles in the shot put and discus. He holds the school record in the discus and outdoor shot.
