MEN'S BASKETBALL
The Blue Devils (5-2, 0-2) will host non-conference foe Bethel College (3-1) Tuesday, Dec. 7, before returning to the conference wars with UW-Eau Claire (3-0, 1-0) coming to Johnson Fieldhouse Saturday, Dec. 11. The Blue Devils took an 86-78 win at Bethel last season. Stout holds an 11-1 lead in the series. Stout and Eau Claire met three times last year, with the Blugolds getting 73-59 and 79-56 wins during the regular season, but Stout roared back in the first round of the WIAC playoffs to get a 70-60 win at Zorn Arena. Stout advanced to WIAC championships. The Blugolds hold a 93-40 lead in the series. The Blugolds will travel to UW-LaCrosse Wednesday, Dec. 8. Last week: The Blue Devils couldn't get untracked as they dropped a conference opening decision to UW-LaCrosse, 86-67, Dec. 1, then came up just short against UW-Whitewater, 84-82, Dec. 4, falling on a last second tip-in. Bethel downed Hamline University, 86-81, Dec. 4 and Northland, 111-71. Their only loss was a 74-59 decision to River Falls in their own tournament. The Blugolds slipped past Stevens Point, 71-68, in overtime, Dec. 4.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Blue Devils (4-1, 2-0) will play Mt. Senario (2-11) Monday, Dec. 6 before setting their sights on conference favorite and arch-rival UW-Eau Claire (6-0, 1-0) Saturday, Dec. 11 at Zorn Arena. Eau Claire won both contests last year, a 105-61 decision early in the season, and 94-72, the second time around. Stout defeated the Blugolds last Feb. 4, 1997, when Stacie Anderson, then a freshmen, nailed a 12-foot shot with six second remaining to lift Stout to a 73-72 win in a packed Johnson Fieldhouse. The Blugolds will host UW-La Crosse Wednesday, Dec. 8. Stout has not faced off against Mt. Senario since the 1994-95 season when they took a 90-53 win. Last week: The Blue Devils are blazing after stomping UW-La Crosse, 82-55, Dec. 1, then downed UW-Whitewater, 65-54, Dec. 4. The Warhawks were picked to finish above Stout in the preseason poll. The Saints lost two games at the Grand View, Iowa, tournament, falling, 62-52, to the host and 86-43 to Hastings College. The Blugolds downed UW-Stevens Point, 77-58, Dec. 4.

HOCKEY
The Blue Devils (3-8-1) will host a pair of MIAC schools this weekend, welcoming in St. Johns (3-5-1) Friday, Dec. 10 and Concordia-Moorhead (6-1-2). The last time Stout and St. John's played a varsity match was the 1982-83 season, the year Stout put the varsity program on ice for 12 seasons. The Johnnie's won both of those meetings, 10-3 and 4-3. St. John's holds a 4-0 lead in the series. The Blue Devils played a Concordia college once, and that was in the 1976-77 season, taking a 6-5 win, but the records do not show which one of the 14 Concordia colleges it is. Last week: The Blue Devils split a pair of NCHA games, downing St. Scholastica, 4-2, Dec. 3, and falling, 4-3, to UW-Superior in the final couple of minutes. St. John's lost 5-0 and 6-2 to St. Thomas last weekend. Moorhead tied St. Olaf, 1-1, Dec. 4 and defeated the Oles, 3-2, Dec. 3.

GYMNASTICS
The Blue Devils will be off until Dec. 15 when they travel to UW-River Falls. Last week: The Blue Devils showed that their young team could be a team to be reckoned with as they came up only 10 points short of defending national champion, UW-LaCrosse, 170.275-160.00. Freshmen Tasha Pasch and Katie Hanson won the uneven bars and balance beam, respectively.

WARHAWKS DOWN BLUE DEVILS ON LAST SECOND PLAY

WHITEWATER - UW-Whitewater's Aubrey Lewis-Byers pulled down a rebound from a partially blocked shot and threw up the winning shot just before the buzzer as the Warhawks pulled off an 84-82 win over UW-Stout Saturday, Dec. 4 in Whitewater.

Stout had bounced back from a 42-34 halftime deficit to take as much as an eight point lead midway through the second half, but fouls began to hurt the Blue Devils (5-2, 0-2) down the stretch as four players fouled out. The Warhawks (4-1, 1-1) made 29-of-46 free throw opportunities.

The Blue Devils had their chances at the line, making 24-of-37, but could not convert late in the game.

With Whitewater holding an 81-80 lead with 1:31 remaining, both teams missed two free throws. The Warhawks' Mike Hughes made one charity shot with 40 seconds left to take an 82-80, but Stout's Jeremy Leibfried (Sr, Dickeyville) canned a jumper with 29 seconds remaining to knot the game.

Ben Kuepers (Sr, Dickeyville) partially blocked a 3-pointer with only a couple of ticks left on the clock, but Lewis-Byers grabbed the rebound off the iron and tipped the ball in for the win.

The loss put a damper on Stout's Aaron Vachowiak's (Sr, Wausau) career-high 24 points. Lewis-Byers also had 24 points to share game honors. Vachowiak and Lewis-Byers each made 10-of-15 free throw, but Vachowiak fouled out with three minutes remaining.

Pat Von Feldt (Jr, Stevens Point) had 18 points and Leibfried finished with 16. Kuepers pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. Ernest Williams finished with 16 points for the home team.

Stout is back in action Tuesday, Dec. 7 when they face Bethel College at 7 p.m. Stout will return to conference play Saturday, Dec. 11 when they host UW-Eau Claire at 7 p.m.

BLUE DEVILS DROP FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON

MENOMONIE - When UW-Stout Rik Bertin stood at the free throw line with 1-minute, 59-seconds remaining, both his chances rimmed out. The play was indicitive of the second half for the Blue Devils as they dropped a conference opening, 86-67, decision to UW-La Crosse Wednesday, Dec. 1 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

The Blue Devils (5-1, 0-1), who trailed by three at halftime, shot only 31 percent from the floor in the second half and finished the night shooting 37 percent. Things were no better at the line, where Stout shot 56 percent (10-of-18).

The Eagles (3-2, 1-0), by contrast, shot a steady 53 percent on the night, and made 82 percent of their free throws (22-of-27). La Crosse shot well from the perimeter and beyond all night.

La Crosse's Paul Manchester led all scorers with 21 points, while Matt Schultz added 20. Eddie Hebert scored 16 and Lee Dicklitch 12.

Bertin (Sr, Fredonia) led the Blue Devils with 14 points, but got 10 in the first half. Pat Von Feldt (Jr, Stevens Point) contributed 11 and Aaron Vachowiak (Jr, Wausau) finished with 10.

BLUE DEVILS DOWN WHITEWATER WITH TOUGH DEFENSE

MENOMONIE - In almost a carbon copy of the last time they met, UW-Stout raced to a big halftime lead, then went on to down UW-Whitewater in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday, Dec. 4 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

The Blue Devils (4-1, 2-0) took a 32-12 halftime lead, then kept the Warhawks (2-2, 1-1) back enough to gather a comfortable 65-54 win. Last year at Johnson Fieldhouse, Stout raced out to a 43-25 halftime lead, but needed to hang on to win, 73-70.

Amy Zelinger (So, Racine) led the way in the first half with 10 points and five steals, three that she got within a minute, leading to two easy buckets. Zelinger finished the game with 14 points.

The Blue Devil full court pressure in the first half caused 23 turnovers, and the Warhawks finished with 31 turnovers.

The Warhawks' Vanessa Rieder led all scorers with 23 points, but no other Whitewater player was permitted in double figures.

Stout was led by Heather Peterson (Sr, Altoona) with 15 points. Stacie Anderson (Jr, Clayton) and Aslynn Johnson (Jr, Clinton) tallied 11 points.

BLUE DEVILS BLOW OUT LA CROSSE

LA CROSSE - To put it mildly, UW-Stout enjoyed an outstanding first half as they went on to down UW-La Crosse, 82-55, in the conference opener at La Crosse, Wednesday, Dec. 1.

The Blue Devils (3-1, 1-0) jumped out to a 46-16 halftime lead and coasted from there, not allowing the Eagles (1-5, 0-1) to get any closer than the final score.

Stout enjoyed all-around play with only three players getting into double digit scoring. Stacie Anderson (Jr, Clayton) scored 11 points, as did Andrea Bresette (Sr, Ashland). Heather Peterson (Sr, Altoona) contributed 10 points and six steals, five in the first half.

The Blue Devils enjoyed a sizeable advantage at the free throw line, pulling down 51 boards to the Eagles' 34. Tina Gillen (So, Northfield) led the way with nine rebounds.

HEATHER PETERSON NAMED WIAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK

MENOMONIE - UW-Stout's Heather Peterson (Sr, Altoona) was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) player of the week for her performance against Concordia-St. Paul, Nov. 24.

Peterson, a 5-foot, 7-inch guard, scored 13 points in the first half and finished with 21 points to help Stout to a 91-75 win over NCAA Division II Concordia-St. Paul. Peterson went 7-for-12 from the floor, 7-for-11 from 3-point range, pulled down four rebounds, had three assists and seven steals in the game.

BLUE DEVIL HOCKEY TEAM FALLS IN FINAL MINUTES TO SUPERIOR

SUPERIOR - After battling back to even, the UW-Stout hockey team tasted defeat at the hands of UW-Superior in the final 1-minute, 30-seconds of the game as the Yellowjackets took a 4-3 win Saturday, Dec. 4 at Superior.

Stout (3-8-1, 1-4-1 NCHA) opened the scoring early in the first period, but the Yellowjackets (8-3, 3-1) put the puck between the pipes three times in the stanza. Stout added a goal in each the second and the third, but the 'Jackets got the game winner from Jeff Glowa.

Stout's Kevin Aube (Jr, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich) got the Blue Devils going only seven minutes into the game, getting assists from Tony Sikich (Fr, Apple Valley, Minn) and Andy Anderson (Jr, Burnsville, Minn), before Superior broke loose for three goals in the period.

Stout edged closer in the second period when Shane Maher (Jr, Forest Lake, Minn) scored midway through the second with an assist by Seth Nelson (Fr, Grand Rapids, Minn).

BLUE DEVILS GET REVENGE OVER ST. SCHOLASTICA

DULUTH, Minn - UW-Stout's Joe Berry (So, Apple Valley, Minn) got the game-winning goal at the 11-minute, 7-second mark in the third period to lift Stout to a 4-2 win over St. Scholastica Friday, Dec. 3 in Duluth, Minn.

Berry got assists from Josh Marklevits (Jr, Red Wing, Minn) and Eric Eggen (So, Hudson) on the goal, as Stout (3-7-1, 1-3-1 NCHA) avenged a 3-2 loss to St. Scholastica in November. The victory was Stout's first Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) win of the season.

Kevin Aube (Jr, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich) recorded an empty net goal with 30 seconds left to ice the win.

The Saints (4-4, 1-2) got on the board first when Phil McDonald scored 11 minutes into the first period. Stout answered back six minutes later when RJ Schriefer (Sr, Cottage Grove, Minn) took assists while on the power play from Cullen Flaherty (Fr, Duluth, Minn) and Drew Nichols (So, Victoria, Minn).

Stout took the lead in the second when Steve Holeczy (Sr, Lincolnshire, Ill) took a pass from Seth Nelson (Fr, Grand Rapids, Minn) six minutes into the period.

Scholastica knotted the score early in the third, but Berry put the Blue Devils up for good seven minutes later. The win moved Stout ahead of St. Scholastica in the NCHA standings. Justin Wiskie (Fr, Janesville) picked up the win in the goal for the Blue Devils, recording 24 saves.

BLUE DEVIL GYMNASTS KEEP ON TRAIL OF NATIONAL CHAMPION

MENOMONIE - The young UW-Stout gymnastics team showed they could very well be a force to be reckoned with in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).

The Blue Devils kicked off their season by hosting defending national champion UW-La Crosse, coming up short on the team score, 170.275-160.00, but two freshmen took firsts on individual events.

Tasha Pasch (Fr, Northfield, Minn) captured the uneven bars, hitting an 8.40, while Katie Hanson (Fr, Duluth, Minn) took the balance beam with a 9.05. Pasch, who won the Minnesota high school uneven bars title last winter, was second on the vault (8.95) and all-around (33.95) and third on the floor (8.60).

The Blue Devils were able to fill every position and even had some exhibition events. Last season, the only event Stout filled consistently was the floor exercise. This year, five individual scores go to the team score instead of four.

McCULLEY NAMED SECOND TEAM WEST REGION, NESBITT THIRD TEAM

MENOMONIE
- UW-Stout's kicker/punter Kevin McCulley (Jr, Fond du Lac) was named to the second team of the 1999 Football Gazette NCAA Division III All-West Region football team at both the punter and kicker positions. He was joined on the team by offensive tackle Jason Nesbitt (Sr, Burlington), a third team pick.

McCulley led the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in punting and points scored by a kicker in both conference games and in all games. McCulley was an all-WIAC first team selection as a punter and kicker.

In 10 games, McCulley averaged 40.1 yards off 61 punts, placing 15 kicks inside the 20-yard line. In the seven conference games, he averaged a league-best 40.0 yards off 48 punts.

McCulley, who place kicks barefoot, led the Blue Devils in scoring with 49 points, kicking 9-of-13 field goals. After missing the first point after of the season, McCulley rolled off 22 straight extra points, going 22-of-23.

Nesbitt has been a steady performer for the Blue Devils over the past four years, starting out as a defensive lineman before finding a home on the offensive line as a sophomore, where he was a second team all-conference pick. Nesbitt was a 1999 first team all-WIAC choice.
