For the week of November 24 - November 30Back to Athletics Home Page | Back Issues Blue Devil Men's BasketballNovember 29, 1997BLUE DEVIL MEN HIT THE BOARDS, FREE THROW LINE TO DOWN CONCORDIAMENOMONIE - Jeremy Preston (Jr, Madison) scored 11 points in the second half and Andy Myers (So, Eau Claire) scored 11 points in the first half to lead UW-Stout to an 81-71 non-conference win over Concordia-St. Paul Saturday, Nov. 29 at Johnson Fieldhouse. Myers finished with 19 points and Preston ended with 15 to give Stout (4-0) their fourth consecutive win to open the season. The Comets (1-2) outshot Stout 49 percent to 37 percent from the floor, but the Blue Devils got a lift on the free throw line, hitting 18-of-24 freebies. Concordia made eight of 12 opportunities. Stout held a 49-30 lead on the boards with Ben Kuepers (So, Dickeyville) pulling down 14 rebounds and Rik Bertin (So, Fredonia) added 10. Myers contributed nine rebounds. Jeremy Leibfried (So, Dickeyville) had 12 points and contributed six assists for Stout. Rick Sundberg led the Comets with 16 points, with Ben Bauer getting 15 and Patrick Gee 10. The last time the Blue Devils led off the season with four straight wins was during the 1994-95 season. Stout is off until Saturday, Dec. 6 when they open up the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference by traveling to defending champion UW-Platteville. November 25, 1997KUEPERS LEADS STOUT TO WIN OVER MARTIN LUTHERNEW ULM, Minn. - Ben Kuepers (So, Dickeyville) led four of the five UW-Stout starters in double figures as the Blue Devils downed Martin Luther College, 90-85, Tuesday, Nov. 25 at Martin Luther to stay undefeated (3-0). Kuepers, who is fighting off a leg injury, stayed out of foul trouble for the first time this season and responded by hitting 8-of-10 shots from the floor and 4-of-6 free throws to score 20 points. Kuepers also pulled down nine rebounds. Fellow starters Jeremy Leibfried (So, Dickeyville), Andy Myers (So, Eau Claire) and Jeremy Preston (Jr, Madison) were all in double figures. Leibfried finished with 12 points, Myers 15 and Preston 16. Pat Von Feldt (Fr, Plover) came off the bench to score 10 points. Rik Bertin (So, Fredonia) pulled in nine rebounds. The Blue Devils held a 49-40 halftime lead, but had to fend off the Knights in the second half. The Knights' Jeff Loberger scored 21 points to lead all scorers and Steve Vasold added 18 for Martin Luther. Blue Devil Women's BasketballNovember 25, 1997BLUE DEVIL WOMEN RUN RECORD TO THREE STRAIGHT WINSST. PAUL, Minn. - Forcing 30 Concordia-St. Paul turnovers, the UW-Stout women's basketball team had little trouble downing the Comets, 85-65, Tuesday, Nov. 25, to stay undefeated in the early season. Staci Rademacher (Sr, Sun Prairie) had seven steals to lead the way as Stout (3-0) picked Concordia's pockets 17 times. Stout's Bree Mahone (So, Racine) led all scorers with 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Jessie Ustby (Fr, Onalaska) came off the bench to add 11 points, as did Kim Hautala (Jr, Crystal Falls, Mich). Stout's pressure defense allowed the Comets to shoot only 29 percent for the game. Concordia got 24 points from the free throw line, hitting 24-of-40 freebies. The Blue Devils are off until Friday, Dec. 5 when they play host to Mt. Mercy College of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, at 7 p.m. in Johnson Fieldhouse. Stout will open conference action Saturday, Dec. 6 when they host UW-Platteville at 3 p.m. Updated: December 2nd, 1997 |
