November 21, 1998BLUE DEVILS COME UP JUST SHORT IN CHAMPIONSHIP GAMEMENOMONIE - UW-Stout overcame as much as an 11-point deficit, but came up just short as they fell to Cardinal Stritch University, 81-80, in the championship game of the Best Western Tip-Off Classic at Johnson Fieldhouse in Menomonie, Saturday, Nov. 21. The Blue Devils (1-1) pulled even at 78-78 when Jeremy Leibfried (Jr, Dickeyville) hit a 3-pointer with two minutes remaining. Cardinal Stritch (4-0) jumped out to a one-point, 79-78 lead when tournament MVP Jeff Kreiling hit one of three free throws. Leibfried gave the Blue Devils the lead, 80-79, with 1:11 remaining by hitting two free throws, but Kreiling got the eventual game winner when he hit a jumper with one minute left. Stout had an opportunity with almost no time left, but Leibfried was contested in the lane and his lay-up drew iron, but no net. Stout's Jeremy Preston (Sr, Madison) led all scorers with 26 points. Leibfried finished with 16 and Ben Kuepers (Jr, Dickeyville) had 14. Kreiling led the way for the Crusaders with 18 points. Kevin Mosley and Kevin Crim each had 16. The loss marked the first time Stout had lost in their own tournament over the three years of the tournament. In the third place game, a 3-pointer by Eric Sundberg with 1:05 remaining and four consecutive Northland College free throws were enough to stave off a North Central University rally to lift Northland to an 80-75 win. Bob Smudde led Northland (2-4) with 21 points, while Brad Besonen finished with 19, Ben Rikkola with 16 and EJ Saurdina with 14 points and 16 rebounds. For North Central (2-4), Josh Redfield led all scorers with 22 points. Jared Somberg had 19 points and Matt Frey, 16. North Central did not miss a free throw in eight attempts, but Northland made 13-of-15 charity shots.
