February 12, 2005BLUE DEVILS' WINNING STREAK ENDED AT EAU CLAIREEAU CLAIRE - UW-Eau Claire ended UW-Stout's eight game winning streak with a 55-47 win over the Blue Devils, Saturday, Feb. 12 at Zorn Arena. Neither team shot particularly well, but the Blugolds shot better in the first half to take a 38-31 halftime lead and made that lead stand up through the second half when Stout got no closer than three points. When Stout (17-6, 10-4) defeated the Blugolds (15-8, 8-6) at Johnson Fieldhouse in January, the Blue Devils had three players in double figures, including post play Kelsey Duoss (So, Janesville) who had 16 points, the same as Lindsey Erichsen (Sr, Spring Valley, Minn) and Lindsey Geissler (Fr, Thorp). Duoss was held to only one field goal and two free throws to tally four point. Erichsen was held to eight points and Geissler to two. No Blue Devil reached double figures as Stout scored their lowest point total of the season. Eau Claire connected on 13-of-29 first half field goals, while Stout hit 9-of-34. It got worse for both teams in the second half as Stout dropped in 6-of-26 from the field and Eau Claire was 5-of-27. Stout finished the game hitting 25 percent and Eau Claire hit 32 percent. Eau Claire got 10 points from three players. Michelle Burns scored all of her points in the first half, while Rachel Becker scored nine points in the first. Emilee Planert scored four in the first and six in the second, hitting four crucial free throws down the stretch to keep Stout at bay. Erin Churchill (Sr, Plum City) and Jenny McDermid (So, Oconto) led Stout with nine points each. With the loss, Stout dropped out of first place and into a tie with idle UW-Oshkosh. UW-Steven Point moved into sole possession of the top spot with a 73-42 win over UW-Superior. Stout will travel to UW-La Crosse Tuesday, Feb. 15 in attempt to sew up a home first round game in the WIAC playoffs. Stout will close the regular season by hosting UW-Platteville, Saturday, Feb. 19 at 1 p.m. February 8, 2005BLUE DEVILS TAKE IT TO YELLOWJACKETS IN SECOND HALFSUPERIOR - UW-Stout turned up the intensity a couple of notches in the second half as they went on to demolish UW-Superior, 69-43, Tuesday, Feb. 8 at Superior. Leading only 25-21 at halftime, Stout (17-5, 10-3) outscored the Yellowjackets, 44-22, in the second half to record their ninth straight conference win and keep pace with UW-Stevens Point for first place in the WIAC. The Pointers defeated UW-Whitewater. Rebounds were at a premium tonight as neither team shot well. After shooting 30 percent in the first half, Stout improved to 42 percent in the second half and close out the night shooting 39 percent (25-of-68). The Yellowjackets (4-18, 2-12) went downhill, starting at 23 percent in the first, then sliding to 18 percent in the second half for a total of 21 percent. Stout held a huge advantage off the glass, pulling down 61 rebounds to Superior's 45. Kelsey Duoss (So, Janesville) led all players with 10 rebounds. Lindsey Erichsen (Sr, Spring Valley, Minn) had eight rebounds to go with her 12 points. Lindsey Geissler (Fr, Thorp) came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points. Molly Hendricks (Jr, Blaine, Minn) chipped in 11 points. Stout was able to clear the bench. Stephanie Janigo led Superior with 14 points.
February 12, 2005BLUE DEVILS BREAK FOUR GAME SKID WITH WIN OVER EAU CLAIREEAU CLAIRE - Three freshmen combined for 55 points as UW-Stout snapped a four game losing streak with a 92-85 win over UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, Feb. 12 at Zorn Arena. Adam Chandler (Fr, Burnsville, Minn) topped the field with a career-best 23 points, while Ryan Stangl (Fr, Spring Valley) added 18 and Eric Heisler (Fr, Burnsville, Minn) came off the bench to add 14 to power the Blue Devils (13-8, 8-6). A couple of juniors also made big contributions. Terry Farmer (Jr, Kenosha) tossed in 16 points and Greg Chaisson (Jr, Minneapolis, Minn) had 10 points. Holding on to a tenuous 36-33 halftime lead, a first half that featured nine tied scores, Stout built up a 14 points, 57-43 lead with 13:15 remaining in the game. While Eau Claire (12-11, 5-9) did break the lead down into single digits, they only got as close as three points once, and that sent Stout off on a 9-0 run, with Stangl dropping in four points during the run, to take an 82-70 lead. Stout did not make a field goal in the final 2:40 of the game, but made 12-of-19 free throws down the stretch for the win. The Blue Devils worked well off the glass, holding a 39-29 advantage. Farmer and Jacob Nonemacher (So, Kalispell, Mont) each had eight rebounds, while Chaisson pulled down six. Stout connected on 58 percent of their shots (29-of-50) and Eau Claire shot 47 percent (13--of-35). Eau Claire's Casey Drake led all scorers with 25 points. Dan Archambault had 19 points and Will Jefferson, 11. Stout will be at UW-La Crosse, Wednesday, Feb. 16 and will close out the regular season by hosting UW-Platteville, Saturday, Feb. 19. February 9, 2005YELLOWJACKETS STING BLUE DEVILS IN OVERTIME, 82-78SUPERIOR - UW-Superior handed UW-Stout their fourth consecutive loss, an 82-78 overtime defeat at Superior, Wednesday, February 9. Stout (12-8, 7-6) held a 67-65 lead in regulation after Terry Farmer (Jr, Kenosha) scored while double teamed and Ryan Stangl (Fr, Spring Valley) dropped in a free throw with 11 seconds left. But Superior's Laron Reed scored with 2.6 seconds left to tie the game at 67. Reed was fouled on the play, but missed the free throw, sending the game into overtime. Farmer hit two free throws to open the overtime period, but a 3-pointer by Reed gave the Yellowjackets the one point lead. The lead would change hands three times before Superior grabbed the lead for good when Reed drove the lane again, drew the foul and, this time, completed the three-point play, putting Superior up, 75-73 with 54 seconds left. The Blue Devils missed three shots on their next possession and would not score until the 15 second mark when Greg Chaisson (Jr, Minneapolis, Minn) popped in a 3-pointer to tighten the score to 77-76. The Yellowjackets sandwiched a three point play and two free throws around a Farmer bucket, and the game was out of reach. Reed led all scorers with 26 points. Stout got 17 points from both Chaisson and Farmer. Farmer finished with a double-double by pulling down 10 rebounds. Eric Heisler (Fr, Burnsville, Minn) came off the bench to score 13 points. Jacob Nonemacher (So, Kalispell, Mont) had seven blocked shots.
February 12, 2005BLUE DEVILS CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON WITH LOSS TO POINTERSMENOMONIE - UW-Stevens Point scored four goals in the third period to hand UW-Stout an 8-2 regular season ending loss, Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Dunn County Ice Arena. The two teams played evenly in the first period. The Pointers (12-11-3, 7-6-1 NCHA) opened the scoring when Tom Vernelli, who would score a hat trick, got a power play goal four minutes into the contest. Stout (9-12-4, 2-9-3) answered back when Justin Huth (Jr, Shakopee, Minn), with assists by Andrew Stearns (So, Wadena, Minn) and Mike Elm (Jr, Falcons Heights, Minn) scored midway through the period. The Pointers regained the lead at the 15 minute mark on a goal by Dan Francis. Stout took advantage of the power play at the 17 minute mark when Todd Wynia (So, Minneapolis, Minn) scored with assists by Elm and Huth. Stevens Point doubled the score with two goals in the second, then doubled that again in the third with four goals. Stout's Jake Schuman (Fr, Spooner) recorded 36 saves, but gave up six goals. February 11, 2005BLUE DEVILS SCORE FIVE STRAIGHT GOALS TO HOLD OFF EAU CLAIREMENOMONIE - Spotting UW-Eau Claire a 2-0 lead, UW-Stout scored five straight goals and went on to a 5-4 win over the Blugolds, Friday, Feb. 11 at the Dunn County Ice Arena. Late arrivers to the standing room-only game missed a lot of first period scoring, but if they stuck around, did see quite a bit in the third period. Eau Claire's Andy Klapperick scored a short-handed goal six minutes into the game. Four minutes later, Ben Manny scored his first of the evening to give Eau Claire a 2-0 lead. Stout (9-11-4, 2-8-3 NCHA) started their attack with five minutes left in the period when Justin Huth (Jr, Shakopee, Minn) scored on the power play. Less than a minute later, Mike Kautz (Jr, Des Plaines, Ill) scored, also on the power play. Mike Elm (Jr, Falcon Heights, Minn) closed out the period with his second goal of the season. The second period was quiet, scoring-wise, but the third started off with a bang when Jake Hemmah (Sr, Red Wing, Minn) scored his first goal since his freshman year three minutes into the period. Jeff DeFrancesca (So, Mt. Prospect, Ill) added a goal four minutes later. The Blugolds (8-12-4, 1-9-3) tightened the game up a minute later when Brooks Lockwood scored. Manny pulled Eau Claire to within a goal, scoring with less than two minutes left. The Blue Devils' Mike Stone (Fr, West St. Paul, Minn) shut the door on the Blugolds the rest of the way to preserve the win. Stone finished with 32 saves, while his counterpart, Steffan Braunlich stopped 26 shots. In addition to his first period goal, Huth assisted on Kautz's and Elm's goals.
